That was Great. I just did the Big 3 upgrade and added a second battery to my truck. I'm adding 7 inch reverse lights and two, 12 inch light bars to the front. I didn't care for the harnesses I was sent. If i have to splice wires to account for length I'd rather do it myself. My truck is just over 20ft long. I also made a 4 switch rocker panel in place of the simple toggles and fabricated them into my overhead center console sunglass compartment. Your video helped a great deal in reassuring my intentions. I do intend to use the necessary parts from the harnesses provided in my rebuild Thank you. Sorry for the long winded comment.

This is the best video I have seen on this so far. Question though, could you not run power to your rocker switch and main power to relay and light bar all off the fuse box? I see you ran the main power from battery to relay. I'm wondering if it's okay to just power it from the fuse box instead.

Hi Chris, very informative. I'm thinking through the idea of using the Voswitch rocker switch bar I'm about to install in my Jeep as a kill switch for the ignition using a rocker switch label that says it's for something else. In this use case, is connecting a relay to the fuse panel of the Voswitch the only way to go or could it be more simplified to route the ignition wire through the rocker switch and bypass the Voswitch fuse panel altogether? Wouldn't this effectively be making the rocker switch the relay using the same current as the ignition currently sends if the switch is activated?

When using a rocker switch in conjunction with a fuse panel, the 12v supply to the switch will be from the fuse panel then the output of the switch will be to the accessory?

Hey one thing I didn’t understand..maybe I missed something (or I’m just stupid 🤷‍♂️) in a circuit that triggers a relay your fuse block only protects the side of the circuit with the switch…the low current stuff. Do you have some kind of device in the loop that goes from battery to relay to device (light bar, air compressor, etc.) to ground? Is it that 100A breaker or maybe a different device you didn’t call out? In the dome light circuit with no relay that 5A fuse protects the whole circuit, switch, lights, etc. If I’m going to drop 30A through something using a relay I am going to want a fuse of appropriate size between the battery and the relay (pin 30) I’d think…asking for a reality check here. Video is great…excellent explanation of the relay and the two sides of the circuit. You know a video is good when you watch several times and review specific parts for reference well done! 👍👍

( 86, 87, 87A are all 12ga wires to carry the power load.) 86 connects to batt. positive term to supply power (Not 30 ). and 85 to batt. ground term. 87A provides constant power until you turn ignition / switch on, 87A closes / off and then 87 provides power from batt. Turn ignition / switch off and through power switches back to 87A. Turn power switch / ignition back on and power flow through 87.

Generally most accessory leads in a car or SXS / ATV are 15 amps. Some can be 10. The relay coil will only pull enough current to work. The only time it would pull more is if it shorted in some way. That would blow the fuse. The average 12 volt relay only pulls .16 Amps to trigger the coil. You could put a 3 amp fuse on the power input wire to the coil if you wanted to be very cautious. But I have not seen anyone do that.

If I'm following correctly, you used the fuse block to fuse the switches? How did you fuse your main 12v for your accessories? I disagree with this entire method. The best way to wire these is to daisy chain all your switch grounds, accessory 12v and lower LED. That way you only have one ground and one 12v source (accessory) powering all your switches. Then you only have the output to the relays. The fuse block should be fusing all your pin 30 connections on the relays.
@venomchris5818
@venomchris5818 Жыл бұрын
You can daisy chain all your grounds but not all accessories use enough amperage to need a Relay on each switch.. So I fused each switch and ran the accessory from each switch.. Only the accessories that drew more current than the switch is rated for got a Relay that was fused. I disagree with the way you would daisy chain all your power to the switches. There is a main circuit breaker on the fuse panel. Of all my switches only two needed relays.

@@frekkledipped The reason you use a relay and run a wire to it to turn the relay off and on is because some accessories draw more current than rocker switches can handle. The relay feeds the higher current wire through it to the accessory. You could come out of the the fuse box using a lead that turns off and on with the ignition switch, That would turn the relay off and on.

5:08 "It's not used very often". Like hell it's not. Early model vehicles use this changeover relay for the headlights. A huge amount use this for the power windows and door locks. I'm not trying to bust balls here , but in the first five minutes you have said many incorrect things. But if you are making a video about relays and trying to explain them to people who don't know how they work then you yourself should get facts correct. Again I am not trying to be a dick, but not misinforming people is something that is paramount when teaching.

2:32 You keep saying plunger. There is NO plunger. This is Not a solenoid. There is a rod (That rod NEVER moves.) in the center of the coil and that gets magnetized. When that happens that magnetism pulls the tiny metal bit that is welded to the copper contactor. 2:40 Also NOT like a hinge at all. It is a either a spring metal or a lever pulled back by springs. In that case it is s teeter saw.

Do I run a wire from both battery post to the switch or just the + and where does the ground wire go to? Also I want the bottom led to run when I turn on my headlights or parking lights. I’m thinking of using my radio dimmer wire which is unused because I have a aftermarket radio that has its own dimmer

@2:16 - The diagram on the right-hand side (relay) has a symbol to the left of where it says "COIL" that looks like a side ways "Play" button actually symbolizes a DIODE. The relay you used (WM686) does NOT have any integrated diode. These are important in relays and any inductor, due to "back EMF" (also called "flyback"). Without a diode, you could damage your circuit when the power to the relay is turned OFF. Otherwise, great video!

@@glenroyglenclarke2374 The 120 AMP relay is numbered exactly the same as the small 30 AMP relay. The diagram that shows the relay pins is the same for the 120 AMP. I used 4 AWG Wire for the switched pass through. The other two wires are ground and a switched 12 volts that trips the relay.

@@glenroyglenclarke2374 If you go to my build thread at : www.wolverineforums.com/threads/venoms-2021-yamaha-wolverine-x2-xt-r-850-build.32328/page-6 , it will show you the relay monte to what I would call the firewall. It is mounted just behind the fuse panel to the left. You can also see it in video #18. The wiring is the same for the large relay as the small. Come off your battery with a positive wire and into a circuit breaker or large fuse. come out of the Fuse Holder / Circuit breaker and go into Pin 30 of the relay. Come out of Pin 87 of the relay and in to the fuse panel. Now take one of the switched accessory leads in the dash and the positive 12V goes to Pin 86 of the relay and the Ground goes to Pin 85. Now when you turn the key on it will power up the fuse panel.
