One setting that you didn't test was to turn the blend up all the way, but keep the Gain under 2 so that the distortion doesn't enter the equation. Blend max, gain low - you keep the clean but its a tad more aggressive and slightly louder.

The history of Orange is way more complex, dramatic, and confusing than that. They started as Matamp, not orange. Matamp made the 2000S amp, and some of those featured an FAC input clipping circuit. Those amps were covered in orange to differentiate them from the standard models, and were then named the "Orange by Matamp". In the early '70s, drama between the 3 owners reached a boiling point, and 2 of them split off to make Orange amps. It is at that time that Matamp started making the Green, and Orange started making the OR120, which are BOTH the Series 2000 with an FAC input. Both companies went out of business by 1980, Matamp due to poor overseas marketing( though they would resume production a year later), and Orange due to more drama between the owners. One of them would start the Electric Amps company (their flagship being the Blue [shocker]), and Cliff Cooper would restart Orange in 1984, which he still owns to this day. As of today, all 3 companies still make amps.
@calebneff57778 жыл бұрын
Electric Amps pretty much just makes the original designs, Matamp makes updated versions of the originals as well as high-tech modern amps, and Orange is basically just making higher quality, darker Marshalls.

The above claim about Matamp is incorrect. It is a common misconception that the earliest Orange amplifiers were jointly produced by Orange and Matamp, the brand name that Mathias used on his own design of amplifiers. This was not the case. Radio Craft produced hi-fi guitar amplifiers which, whilst ideal for bass guitar, produced a tone far too clean and flat for electric lead guitars. Early Orange Matamp amplifiers were built by Radio Craft to Cooper's specification to provide a new generation of guitarists with the sustain they demanded. The front end was modified and Cooper changed the chassis from lightweight aluminium to enamelled steel. The Orange logo was designed to be clearly visible on stage. When the design was delivered to Radio Craft, Mathias suggested that a small Matamp logo be added. As a courtesy to Mathias, Cooper agreed to this request, making Matamp a model name. The first of the Orange Matamp amplifiers were 100 watt valve amps and were produced in very small numbers in the rear of a tobacconist shop owned by Mathias. Demand for Orange amplifiers grew quickly and Radio Craft was unable to keep up with orders. It became apparent that larger premises were required for business growth.

From the official Orange website: “I chose a bright and energetic colour as a brand name: Orange has always been my favourite colour and as it is also a fruit, here was a brand name that crossed international language barriers.” Interesting to note: Apple Music (The Beatles) was also founded in 1968.

In a direct A/B comparison, I found these to have a darker, more industrial or death metal tone, compared to the fender rumbles which sound more all-rounder and have a brighter tone overall. I guess it depends which kind of music you play, both sound great but so different when played with the same instrument and no pedals.

This Orange Crush ones vs Fender Rumble?
@loganbrace64636 жыл бұрын
Hard to compare the two. Completely different sounds. The Orange Amps aren’t going with the current trend of striving for as much clarity as possible. Any Orange amp has a lot of gain & distortion, IMO. You get a lot more warmth than you would from, say, a Marshall. The Fender Rumble is (dare I say) more versatile, but also a little less unique. The low end is awesome & it’s easy to lay down the sonic foundation. All around you’re speaking on two really good amps that do different things. The Rumble amps are significantly more affordable, though.

Having spent most of my life working for Very Popular MI Manufacturers I surprised myself to bits when I sat down before doing a Clinic and plugged into a Crush 50. Nto being one who poses and tosses my head back and forth at high rates of speed, an Orange Amp was the Very Last Unit I thought I would ever buy. Hashtag #notmystyle :) I was blown away! I then had to compare the Crush to others and the Crush 50 Destroyed each of them quite Handily. The Crush 50 is a Tone Monster! GIGS: I plug the 50 into an Aguilar 1x12 extension cab. . Good Golly Miss Molly! It's a Gig Machine !! 😳 #1. It' available in Black for those who are unsure of their Manhood. :) #2. There's a HUGE difference between this series and the First Crush amps with WHITE Control panels. #yukko #stayaway. Bottom Line: IMHO.... The 50 is the Best in Class. I'd love to see Orange offer a 1x12 with the same speaker that's in the 50. They already have a matching cab but it's loaded with a Premium speaker. PS: The tuner is Fab and I've never, not once, used the Distortion/Gain/Overdrive. #bassilicious. RB

have tried the OB1 which is a great head and the OD tone is great. Not sure if it was the mixing or the choice or riffage by Nathan on the day, but was not overly taken for the fuzz OD tone that particular Orange Crush was giving. the 100 watt did seem slightly better. Clean tone in your demo was great.

Nice amp, cool color, looks really well made, but the pricing seems high. Here in the US, the Fender Rumble 500W combo is about the same price as the Orange 100W. You can almost get a superior Mark Bass Combo for the price of the Orange 100W.

New Bass player, Looking at the Orange Crush 25 for home use. Thoughts or drawbacks? I am primarily looking for an AMP that has good sound and tone. Might want to throw a pedal for boost in there at a later time.. is the 25 able to deal with an inline Pedal?
@ricdoliveira30752 жыл бұрын
As a long time musician, I used to loathe small amps. For practice and small in-house jams, I’m really liking the 25. The size just lets it disappear, when not in use. In an apt that’s an asset. After the fact, I’d likely go for the 50 ( More push on bottom)but for my purposes the 25 is loud enough, and sounds great. Hmmm maybe the 100? I’d like any of them. 25 practice amp ( excellent one). The 50 as they suggest. Awesome practice amp, or jams. The 100? They covered nicely.

Here's a suggestion: in addition to more model review (P-bass, Jazz, Thunderbird, Rickenbacker), could you explore how to get the kind of melodic top-end tone that we're hearing from players like Tal Wilkenfeld? She can make a bass sound achingly beautiful as a solo instrument, not just booming away under the band.

Mr Nathan. Orange amps have an on/off switch on the tuner because it's probably a digital tuner. If it would be always on, then the signal would OBVIOUSLY be always passing through it, interfering with that organic sound and the circuitry that Captain Lee was talking for the 3 previous minutes leading to that very faulty remark... Are you even listening?

These are very cool, but they do need an update, a V2 if you will. For example gatekeeping a DI out to the higher priced amp might have been a thing when these were being designed as the ‘pro’ model you can go into front of house with, but nowadays you expect a DI out on pretty much anything for home studio use, everyone’s adding more and more modelling and sims and such to their combos at the same price, etc. They still sound cool and look very cool, but yeah, tech moves fast these days, time for a V2 Orange.

Its becasue Digital has to simplify the signal and it looses bits in there, analog is more of a direct signal and more acurate to what your playing, the same goes for cable tv. you can get more in didgital but a good analog signal is alot better quality just harder to send.

Jacob Clark take your guitar to your local music store and plug into every bass amp. But I can assure you that you won’t be impressed by the tone. You really, REALLY want a tube amp for guitar as these class D amps with overdrive just don’t sound right with a guitar. We can get away with it for bass because we’re not going for a true overdriven tube breaking up tone, but rather a lot of headroom with a little grit added to taste. I want as much volume as possible without the amp breaking up and that’s why the Aguilar Tone Hammer 500 is such a great amp. It’s got a ton of power for plenty of headroom, even with two 8ohm cabs, and it has a gain and a drive feature in the preamp section.

i think Orange shoulda went 200 watts on the 15. cause even that in a band from a SS amp is hardly enough. I miss my rig from about 10 years back. Had an Eden WTsomething head, a GK 2x10 on top of a MarkBass 15 (little mk model i think, the 15in cab weighed like 35lbs!!!). now all that gear is gone, and that Markbass cab i miss the most, followed by the Eden head. IIRC it ran 200 wats at 8 ohms, 400 or maybe 500 at 4 ohms, and like 700 something at 2 ohms! that amp was a beat. the Ohms probably not correct, just going from memory. Eden used to make great amps in the 90s/early 00s. from where my amp was. but there new stuff since selling out in like 2010 or so are terrible. a lot of smaller bass companies that put out great gear in the 90s/00s have sold out, gone outta business, etc. anyone here remember the 'DR. Bass' fiasco from the talkbass forums? guy basically had a ponzi scheme outta building bass cabs. take money for orders to finance already late orders, whole thing was a disaster.

Is it just me that thinks the distortion is too "fizzy" sounding?

Dont know why they push the distorted capabilities of Orange. They have that for sure, but they are beautiful clean caps also.

Really hate distortion on a bass amp.Reminds me of when I blew the 18" speaker on my Selmer Goliath. Denny Laine told me it sounded like a tuba.

Kevin Yariel you must hate motorhead
@kevinyariel26517 жыл бұрын
Actually I love motorhead! Lemmys distortion is just too unique to compare! no one can imitate his tone! the only bass distortions i like are all of metallicas bass distortions, motorhead and victor wooten!
@michaelnatsariym36906 жыл бұрын
Kevin Yariel then you can't say you hate distorted bass.
@swid_swid_swid6 жыл бұрын
It's actually pretty easy to imitate his bass tone -- one essentially just needs a Rickenbacker and an old, non-master volume Marshall (or clone) cranked up to 7 or so, mids cranked, bass and treble somewhat down -- attack the bass when you really want it to growl, play a bunch of chords when you really, REALLY want it to growl, and you''re pretty much there. Of course, imitating his attitude? Hell no -- there will NEVER be another Lemmy! RIP. As far as why his bass sounds better than most distorted bass, a lot of bass distortion has a way of sheering off the transient attack of individual notes, which kills the rhythm of the bass -- a slight overdrive (pedal or amp) was a lot of mids (a lot of bassists scoop the hell out of their mids, because it covers up their bad playing!) preserves that, hence it sounds badass.

The attack and punchy response you get from a solid state power section I feel far better than an analog power amp any day. Though analog has the warm low end, it is in most amps far too muddy with piss poor response.

Fender has the crush beat. Granted the crush arguably sound better butinstead of paying $960(690 pounds) for just the head i can buy both a 500 watt head and 600 watt cab for $700(500 pounds) its more for less granted both are still a fuck load of money but you get such a better deal with fender in my opinion
