These video's are absolute gold, I'm in shock at the fact that this guy isn't a 'mainstream' KZbin personality for guitar enthusiasts and students alike. Such a clear and concise delivery of information for every concept with easy to understand explanations and images. This guy teaches like a storyteller, bravo.

I love this video and I appreciate how clear you are with this lesson. I wanted to note that at about 3:45 you say “second degree” but are obviously meaning “third degree” as it is highlighted in the diagram. I just wanted to note this in case it may alleviate any possible confusion for others watching.

Great video. I have the minor scale down like nobody's business in most keys, and it's time to stretch out. I love the gypsy jazz variation. My problem is I primarily play by ear so I need to spend a day or two getting my ear around the sound of the scale. Once that happens I can easily pick out the correct notes in one key with my developed 'relative pitch' and then go on to other keys....once I have the visual/audible pattern down I start learning the note names and theory behind it. Might not work for everyone but that's my approach. EDIT.....a big issue of mine is finally realizing that scales are flexible. With phrygian, harmonic minor and natural minor you can fudge over and add notes according to the flavour you want and nothing really has to be set in stone. That was a hard concept for me to grasp.........wrong notes will always make themselves known!

Excellent video! I'd like to mention Jason Becker (neo classical) and Jango Reinhardt (gypsy jazz) as inspiring musicians/innovators heavily using harmonic minor and diminished scales.

Hi Rob, I got a question, you showed only 2 Patterns for the Harmonic Minor tonality. With its, 3 notes per string version. Both, with the one shape with the root on the 6th string, and one with the root on the 5th string. I just stared to work on the Harmonic Minor tonality. And I was given 5 patterns, CAGED. And I was looking for the "Arpeggios" and "Chords" shapes, in those 5 patterns. KZbin, proposed your Video. So I watched it......and it's great. I am really impressed, by the quality in every detail you have raised. Please consider I'm not a pro, as you can imagine. But how shall we be able to play in postion (vertically), with only 2 patterns? Horizontally, 2 patterns that's fine. I understand you move the root for each shape to the key you are supposed to be in. And you use then, the corresponding pattern.
