On the day of my introduction to prog in '73, a day that literally changed my life, a Boy Scout buddy of mine played Time And a Word, Close to the Edge and Genesis' Foxtrot. They BLEW MY MIND. Previously, I was heavily into softer rock and Motown, I had never heard music like this, wonderful, complex and seemingly rooted in Classical. Being a budding drummer and songwriter at the time, the mathematics of the different time signatures intrigued me. My two favorite drummers, who were initially Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich, became Bill Bruford and Phil Collins. Listening to them play was mesmerizing and definitely affected my style of play, along with my songwriting. I will never forget that day ! Prog Rules !

Yea has been my favourite band since the release of The Yes Album. I remember as a teen working like mad on a piano arrangement of Roundabout that was, at best, passable. But my buddies loved it. To say nothing of a medley of selections from Six Wives. I still haven’t heard a band that tops them.

I'm surprised to hear Yes played Asbury Park in November 1971. I saw them open for ELP which must have been late 1972 then. I recall Ed Sciaky was a major supporter of Yes on Philly radio, as he was of a number of other artists, including Bowie, Springsteen, and Billy Joel.

They played in Atlantic City, NJ, in July 1971, opening for Jethro Tull. My Uncle Hank and Aunt Marianne Hecker were at the concert. I heard a radio interview with Jon Anderson around the mid-1990's, and he actually MENTIONED that gig! July 7th, 1971, I think.

I have read from on a music channel on Comcast years ago that Yes got their First Start when Sly and the Family Stone backed out of a Tour with Creams Farewell Tour back in the late sixties (68 or 69). Later on years go by and I heard that Sly had a Fear of Stage Fright which I’m guessing is why they back out of the Tour with Cream back then so someone asked Yes to Fill in for Sly and The Family Stone. I’d have to to a little more research into that to find the right answer for how Yes got their First Start on Stage though.

You quit the podcast at a good point because that was when I started to hate Yes. I consider Drama to be Yes's last great album unless you count ABWH as part of the Yes discography. While Drama did not include Anderson and Wakeman, it was still as much in line with the band's prior work. 90125 and Big Generator make me cringe. Don't get me wrong, it's great music, but it isn't Yes music. It's Trevor Rabin using Yes musicians as his backup band.

ABWH is YES, and I saw them live in 89 and 90. Great show
@Randy.E.R10 ай бұрын
@@PaulFormentos I saw ABWH in 1989 at the Greek theater in Los Angeles. it was, by far, the best concert that I have attended. I ended up taking my sister when a series of mishaps prevented my wife from going and damn near kept me from being able to go. I have always appreciated how Yes doesn't waste a lot of money on pyrotechnics and other nonsense, they rather just put on a heck of a show. To return the favor, and for my 30th birthday, my sister took me to see Yes's Union concert in 1991. That show combined the ABWH and 90125 lineups of the band. The eight member ensemble was nothing short of a miscarriage of music. If my sister hadn't paid for the tickets I would have left after about 30 minutes of the show. Bill Bruford and Rick Wakeman have both expressed their regrets for being a part of the Union show. Perhaps I am being too critical. Yes, in my opinion, will always be the classic lineup
@markhunter85548 ай бұрын
Absolutely. I personally find it interesting that Drama sounded more like Yes without Anderson than 90125 & Generator did with Anderson. But Anderson was not the main songwriter on those albums.
