Greetings from Canada! Just ordered the 5005 Gen 2 with the honda adapter kit to upgrade my small business. During Covid I had so much freetime I rigged up a jig to hold my blades in place and a wicked edge/ edge pro style sharpening system and was basically putting knife edges on my blades. I had three sets that I changed out weekly and was mowing like every other day. That was the best my lawn has ever looked. Those were the days. Bring back covid.

Been watching several videos on how to sharpen a lawnmower blade. From each one I gained a new piece of knowledge. From you I learned that there is a regular blade and a mulching blade. Had no idea that was a thing. But thank you for mentioning this as my mower is a mulching mower. Had no idea my blade is different from the guy next door. I gave you a “like” and subscribed.

What a great product !!! The wife ordered the 505 model on Thursday afternoon and we received it Monday afternoon.(would have been sooner but UPS don’t do weekends lol ) I was able to set it up and decided to try it out on some Land Pride finish mower blades I had in the shop. Was able to get the blades brought back to a decent cutting edge again. Then I sharpened the blade on my Toro push mower with fantastic results!!!!! cuts like a new mower !! Getting ready to do my Ferris next ! Easy to use,made in the USA ! What a great product the All American Sharpener is.

So I ordered this last week and received it two days later. Setup was very straightforward and it came with four pins so there was one that fit my old Skil grinder. The build quality is excellent and looks like it should last for many years. It's easy to use and does a awesome job of sharpening the blades. Always used a bench grinder before and never could get the angles right but not a problem now with this sharpener.

Todd, ordered the 5005ext with Honda adapter and received it in 2 days, I just couldn’t wait to test your product out. Instructions were very clear and precise. The product material is first class you can tell a lot of time went into this and it will last a life time, I pulled my Honda blades out and went to work and oh my what a difference, I have been paying between $10 and $13 to have one blade sharpened (Honda has 2 blades), so $20 out the door, your product is awesome and makes it so easy. I just love it--- ps. The guys sharpening my blades was just tearing them up not very sharp and not at factory 30 degrees angle.

I can attest to the sheer (design) genius of this sharpener. I mow an acre of thick tall fescue with two passes from opposing directions with a 60" zero turn. Consequently I need to sharpen and balance three mulching blades every 4th time I mow. This season I mow twice a week sometimes with all the rain. So far I've sharpened three blades 6 times times this year to keep my lawn looking professionally maintained. Recently I've been asked to sharpen mower blades for neighbors. I can't justify the expensive Oregon or similar sharpening setups. Nor have I ever been satisfied with the results of sharpening the mulching blades with a bench grinder. I like the simplicity of the design and fact I can get an almost razor sharp edge on a mulching blade with the right grinding disc. I'll be ordering one soon.

I was a farmer. We would use hard surface welding rods, and where ever the metal would wear on subsoiler feet, and shanks . We added the hard surface. I started my own lawn service. I use one set of blades to see where they wore down the most. So where they wore. I added hard surface, which included the cutting edge . When I sold the riding tractor. Those blades were still on the mower. Give it a try.

My thoughts on this item? 1 - Shipping was lightning fast. I ordered Wednesday evening, and it was at my door Friday morning. 2 - The item was packaged very good, and had all hardware required to assemble along with very clear instructions on how to use the jig 3 - The quality of this product rivals anything I've seen to date. Solid and straight cut aluminum with chamfered and relieved edges gives the product a solid feel - and for the tool aficionado, it is very easy on the eyes, almost like a work of art. 4 - Assembly and installation of the jig on my work bench was very straight forward. So much so that any novice would be hard pressed to get lost installing this jig. 5 - It works GREAT! I had four sets of blades that the 30 degree edge was long lost from hand grinding. After using this jig on them, they look as good as new and has a nice sharp edge - ready to cut any lawn. I'd recommend this item to anyone that is serious about maintaining their personal lawn to the professional that does landscape as a business, or even to a small shop owner that reconditions lawnmower blades for profit.

I love it. I have 5 acres and use a riding mower as well as a brush hog with tractor. Do you think I could modify the blade holder so I could hold my brush hog blades in place to sharpen them with your jig too?
@AllAmericanSharpener3 жыл бұрын
Hi John. We have had some customers who have been able to adapt or modify their jig to work with their brush hog blades. But, in general, we cannot recommend it. Our jigs are very sturdy, but only meant for mower blades. We fear that many brush hog blades are just a bit too hefty for the device. One day down the road we may develop a larger jig that is meant for brush hog blades. Thank you for your interest!

Well, it sure impressed me, so I went to his website and bought the Model 5000, because I have 3 mulching blades in my Exmark 52-inch Radius zero-turn mower. Just dawned on me. My blades are mulching blades and I would surmise that the blades cut the grass particles flying around in the deck again and again, now just once. Sorry about the “too quick” question on having to sharpen the raised section of the mulching blade. JoeB
@AllAmericanSharpener4 жыл бұрын
Not a problem on the question. As you have pointed out, the inside raised cutting section does have some value. It is there to redirect airflow and help chop up the already once cut mower blades. But we do agree that the most important cutting section of the blade is the outside 2 or 3 inches. That's where all the original cutting action happens. Thanks for your comments!

Thank you for your enthusiasm about our sharpeners! We have put some thought into a possible design for alternate blades, but the project hasn't gone beyond that yet. We have had some customers who were able to adapt their 5005 to work with bush hog blades, but in general, we still do not recommend it with our current jigs. Thanks for checking in with us about it. I just received my 5005 sharpener a few days ago. My first reaction as I was unpacking it was it was a bit pricey for what you get. After setting it up and sharpening the first set of blades I was shocked how far off my hand sharpened blades were from the 30 degrees the blades needed to be. We mow about 3 acres a week around our property and the blades I sharpened with he 5005 cut like brand new blades and the yard looks amazing. I have already sharpened one of my spare set of blades and have another set that will be sharpened soon. I am now convinced it is a great buy and concept. I would purchase it again with no hesitation.

We include 4 different adapter pins with our sharpeners, and one of them should fit your grinder. There are a few exceptions, and I will include a link to the spreadsheet we have been building with common grinder thread sizes. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vQDszcT1Z3vLhwPYrQa8IxdN3aFanMZCHrbS1JR59SUGMEfMzpHl9Wq2yG_ZLJktflkmwhpD8FVtdjY/pubhtml?gid=69379172&single=true If you are sharpening a variety of blades, the Model 5005 will be best suited to that. What's the point in having the angles labeled if you just quickly adjust it without looking on the mulching blade? 2 different angles, both are supposed to get a 30 degree angle ????
@AllAmericanSharpener4 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris. On the Model 5000, there are 2 settings specifically for commercial bi-level mulching blades. They are marked more just so you can remember which setting is for what. On our newer Model 5005, there are multiple settings. So it is important to have them marked to come back to the same settings every time you sharpen a specific blade. Different blades need different angle settings. The angle adjustment is needed because of the tilts or twists in a blade. Here is a link to video that might give you a better idea of why the angle settings need to change. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJbNgYOBd9uSb9E Most times, the adjustments are in order to keep the factory angle, which is usually close to a 30 degree edge. @AllAmericanSharpener2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill. Yes, I believe you are referring to a left hand or counter rotating mower blade. To sharpen a blade like that, you will actually be sharpening the edge below where the blade is mounted in the vise system. The link below will take you to a demonstration video of this. It's not the same blade as yours in the video, but the same principle applies. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d57PopZ3id2Xd7M We hope this is helpful!

How does it work on a blade in which the cutting edge is not in straight alignment. All of my blades have “wear” on the cutting portion and do not remain straight. Just wondering....
@AllAmericanSharpener5 жыл бұрын
It will try to keep a straight line, but the grinder will still sharpen a worn edge that does not follow a straight line. It may take more passes with the grinder to get the whole edge sharp. The best example I have is this bi-level blade I sharpened for someone else. It was in pretty bad shape (worn with deep nicks), so I had to spend more time on it than an average blade. But I didn't have to grind until I had a straight edge just to get it sharp. I will share a photo link below: photos.app.goo.gl/crkDGD4nCYtX8YuaA

How do you adjust the 5005 to do mulching blades? It doesn’t just have to tip feature like the 5000 you’re show ing here. At what angle would you use to sharpen the top portion of a mulch blade?
@AllAmericanSharpener Жыл бұрын
I'm linking a couple of videos that demonstrate the way the 5005 works, and also walks you through how to find your angle. Every mower manufacturer has their own unique blade geometry, so it's not a one-size-fits-all approach to angles. Generally speaking, the raised mulching portion needs to be set 15 degrees LESS than the angle you're using to sharpen the cutting section. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6axn6ehpMuWj7M kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4LHaauYj8yep5I Thank you for checking in, and for your interest. What about the angled sections of the mulch blade?They need sharpened to,as they are cutting edges as received when new.The Oregon has an attachment post to grind the entire cutting edge.Perhaps your flip adjustment could be adapted to do the other 2 edges?
@AllAmericanSharpener5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I'm following your question. We sharpen the entire cutting edge of the mulching blade. In the video, he refers to the angle in between the two sections as the "transition area". When watching the video, you will see him sharpen half of the transition area in one position, and the other half in the other position. Then he moves on to sharpening the rest of the edge.

@@Bowtie41 I see. If it were me, and I wanted that edge sharp, I would just keep grinding further back in the same position, or maybe back in the down position. The blade edge that close to the center has relatively little circular motion, which means it is not doing much cutting, and it isn't as prone to damage and wear. So I wouldn't be overly concerned with that area. Most of the action is happening on the outer portion of the cutting edge, away from the center. Hope this helps. Thanks for your interest!

Thanks for your confidence, Larry. Design development and production is a pretty involved process, and at this point we've kept our focus on basic mower blade sharpening. Question.....why sharpen the raised section on the blade. As the mower goes forward the grass is contacted by the leading edge of the blade and is cut or broken off at that time. The raised sharp area of the blade would never get to the grass first. So why sharpen it ? This is not a wise guy question. I am an engineer and this type of question will always come up. Another question, an older KZbin video was by a manufacturers rep advising against a razor sharp blade on a bush hog. If I remember correctly...his reason was that the sharper the edge, the more likely it would be chipped and damaged as the blade encountered stones, stumps , etc. Do you subscribe to his reckoning? If so, should the grass lawn mower grass blade be extremely sharp? Great video, great simple tool. Just wondering about how sharp a mower blade should be. Anyone else out there have any experience with my thoughts ? Thanks for the video. JoeB
@AllAmericanSharpener4 жыл бұрын
Hi JoeB. Thank you for your comments and kind words. We agree that the inside raised section is a secondary edge. All the real action is happening on the outside cutting section. But, as you pointed out in your other comment, it does do some mulching. That section is also responsible for air redirection to help mulch up the already once cut blades of grass. So having that edge sharp is also helpful. We try not to argue about whether the mower blades should be razor sharp, or slightly dulled. There are some people that are very passionate about this topic. Personally, we do not dull or blunt our mower blades after sharpening them. The theory is that, if they are too sharp, they will take nicks more easily. This may be true. I would imagine a lot of that depends on the environment you are mowing in. We do not have any issues mowing our grass with a sharp blade. Any nicks that I see in a my blades, are likely nicks that would have happened even if the blade was slightly dulled before mowing. I suppose it also helps our decision knowing that we have a simple way to sharpen our blades. So we don't feel like it's a burden to sharpen them on a somewhat regular basis. We probably sharpen them about every 10 hours. That's when we feel a difference as they are starting to get dull. Thank you for your interest and your comments!

I was always taught to have the angle grinder, or table grinder or file cutting into the blade edge not away from the cutting edge like this sharpener does, just like you sharpen a knife - whats the opinion here?
@AllAmericanSharpener3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. We were taught that early on as well. Although I have since seen many professional knife makers who, during their process, sharpen with a belt going away from the edge. The main reason we do it this way with our jig is because a flap disc will get caught or cut up if grinding toward the edge. Since it is a mower blade and not a fine edged knife, we have found that this method gets the edge plenty sharp in a safe manner. If a burr does form, it is pretty easy to remove it. I wonder if we can pull @Matthew Rowell from The American Edge into this conversation. He has a lot more knowledge about sharpening fundamentals. I'm not sure if this mention will notify him or not. kzbin.infovideos
