Will the 5000 still work on a straight blade at 30 degrees?

Yes, the Model 5000 is built to toggle between a 30 degree setting and a 15 degree setting, so that mulching blades are an option. The reality is that due to the shape stamped into the blades by most manufacturers, there are few mower blades that can utilize the 30 degree setting. The thing to keep in mind is that most blades are set to a 30 degree angle relative to the underside of the blade directly beneath the cutting edge. Where the angle setting on our jig comes in is when you look at the bevel relative to the center mounting area of the blade. Even blades that appear flat and straight often have a bit of tilt or lift stamped into the blade during the shaping process. That 5 or 10 degrees (or 15 degrees in the case of John Deere blades) can make a big difference with regard to the life of your blades. Since the difference in price between the 5000 and the 5005 is just $20, we typically recommend the 5005 because it is the most versatile and future proof of our sharpeners.
