Still have my original 2004 R32 Blue - and every time I drive it, the magic I felt in 2004 when driving away from the dealership, is still there. Unbelievable. I live in SoCal - 158k on it now - and I still have folk stop to comment on it - or give the thumbs up on the freeway - motorcyclists , car drivers, truckers. Happens 3-4 times every month. And it's a 20 year old VW ! Magical. It's still hard to get used to. Parked next to a 170k Mercedes and it is the R32 that gets the looks / questions. Heater core leaked after about 14 years and the timing chain replaced after 18 years (That was expensive - had the clutch replaced also whilst in the shop although the clutch was still ok) - New suspension of course. VW got it spot on with the R32. Plenty of cars faster or more exotic...but there is nothing I would want to replace it with. Makes even driving to the dentist a joy !!

The MK1 Audi TT (based on a MK4 Golf Chassis) was available after 2004 with a 3.2 VR6 and was DSG only. The MK2 TT (based on a MK4 Golf chassis) was available with a manual--Basically opposite the VW offering in the US. So to answer your question, the MK1 Audi TT was the first platform in the US to receive the dual-clutch gearbox.

I liked everything the guy in the red car said, but the guy driving the white car to say the R32 isn’t the predecessor to the R models is ridiculous, actually the R32 is still held above the R trim to most people. I’ve owned them all. Also a MK5 GTI and a MK5 R32 do not drive similar

As mentioned in the comments, the MK1 Audi TT 3.2 (the MKIV R32s stable mate) came to the U.S./North America only with DSG, the New Beetle also had the option for DSG in 2004. Also worth mentioning DSG was immediately available in the MKV Golf/GTI lineup in the U.S. in 2005. Something about the way the 2.0T in the GTI delivered its fuel, allowed VW/Audi (the TT and the A3 also had the transmission/engine combo) to fine tune that delivery to work better with the DSG. The 3.2 VR6 had a different way of fuel delivery which resulted in the slight disconnect mentioned. Another thing about the handling; the MKIV R32 was the only Golf of its generation to go with full Independent Rear Suspension, while the Golf and GTIs were using Torsion beams, you could immediately tell the difference. For the MKV generation the GTI also went IRS, so the handling wasn't going to be much different from the MKV R32 (weight distribution and drive wheels excepted). The MKV was available in other markets with unique seats that unfortunately did not meet U.S. safety standards, for our market they instead went with GTI seats.

For anyone wondering about turbo tuning: Reputable German company HGP made turbo kits for both the 4 and 5 series R32. If you invested enough money, both 3.2l engines made 400-500hp, reliably. There were required upgrades of brakes, clutch, transmission and suspension for official German road approval (traditionally known as being picky), which made it very costy, talking about at least 20-30k moneys here, but very much worth it. To be clear, we're talking about a good 300 km/h or 185 mph road-approved in a Golf here. There are still a few 500+ hp turbo R32 specimen that are perfectly road legal in Germany today.

When this video came up I was excited to finally watch an honest, well thought out review of each of these cars. That's exactly what I got for the first 13(ish) minutes. You gave a brief history of engines from the very start to the VR6 (very well done btw), a pretty good and well thought out review of the Mk4 R32 and then just mindlessly shit on the Mk5 R32 for about 24 straight minutes, not by providing ANY of the content that was included in the Mk4 R32's review, but by talking about the DSG and your obvious distain for it. This was like watching two entirely different videos that were poorly mashed together. Clearly you CAN do better. (Please reference the first 13 minutes of your video) So please, do better.
@ExhibitionofSpeed2 жыл бұрын
Greetings Great Kazoo. So just some thoughts here. The "shitting" on the Mk5 R32 wasn't exactly mindless. I had driven the car for the whole day and in comparison to the Mk4, the car didn't feel like it had that much personality. The appearance of the exterior and interior were both very much in-line with a standard GTI, and the driving dynamics never really stood out to me. The attributes that the car provided me in the moment were really just the sound of the VR6, and an antiquated gearbox. While the Mk4 was a solid 7-8/10 experience, the Mk5 felt like a strong 6/10. We enjoy making these films and I had really high hopes for this car. It just didn't live up to my preconceived thoughts on it. Another thought as well, I don't want to sound like this an excuse, but the behind the scenes for this film were a massive shitshow and I personally let that affect me and my review once the GoPro turned on (and restarted 3 more times due to camera overheating problems). I fully admit that this is a "me problem" and not a "car problem" and take full responsibility for that part. I appreciate your thoughts and insights into the video and I will do my absolute best to negate my attitude in the future. Hopefully we haven't lost you as a viewer quite yet and you stick around to enjoy the other exciting content we have planned to release this year. Thanks for watching, Gavin

Great vid! I’m the original owner of my MK4 R32. You posted 2004-2005. The MK4 R32 was never produced in 2005 in the United States. The MK4 R32 technically has 250 hp same as the MK1 Audi TT 3.2. From what I gathered. Volkswagen marketed the MK4 R32 at 241 hp on paper, as to not to take away sales from the MK1 Audi TT 3.2. The MK4 R32 sold out all 5,000 in just one year. Not taking anything away from the MKV R32 it didn’t sell as well, it took just about twice as long to sell. Enthusiasts such as my self weren’t keen on the DSG at the time. The rumors were going around on VWVORTEX That the MKV R32 would be equipped with the 3.6 VR6 and would be dubbed the R36. My friends have the MKV R32 and I’ve driven them and it does NOT drive like a MKV GTI which I’ve also driven. By the way. The MKV R32 has vw 2nd generation DSG. The MKV R32 had in ( Europe) nice seats which were Recaro’s and we never got in the States.

Owner of a 2009 dsg in the uk. My opinion on some of your points. For me the mk5 is the better car im almost everyway as an all round offering. It not 'disjointed' imo but like any cars you need to figure out what its about. Really the mk5 is a gt car in a golf chassis. Its a 7/10ths car and this is where it shines. The dsg is sublime if you know how to drive it. It doesnt like nervous indecisive inputs as its guessing what you are going to do next. Its not meant for ultimate performance but delivers good performance and comfort with state of the art technology and options at the time. Back to back the mk4 may be more 'fun' but use the mk5 as an all weather daily commuter and it should all start to make sense. The only thing i can criticise is that they are some nvh in the plastics and also the macphersons strut setup doesnt feel tight enough despite the additional rigidity. Also the sport mode is very good.
@ExhibitionofSpeed Жыл бұрын
Okay.... A few things here. It's not like DSG is like BMW SMG/Ferrai F1 gearboxes where you have to learn it. I approached the car from an objective POV and the Mk5 was totally dull from my perspective. We don't post videos just to kiss ass and tell you something that we don't fundamentally agree with. Dude, I've worked in and around a bunch of VW products from being a content creator at Integrated Engineering. I'm aware of how a DSG is supposed to drive and behave, and I was both disappointed in the experience, and also wanted to showcase how far we have come with the technology in almost 20 years. Thanks for watching. -Gavin

Perhaps. And that is something that could be said about any kind of issue with any car. "Oh, X Car isn't fast/efficient enough? Buy this tune/part from Y Company to solve Problem Z." We always try to get cars on camera that are as close to original as possible, so we can showcase the purest experience and find the essence of what each car is. We can't deny that there is a joy and a fantasy of solving problems, and in some cases, reverse engineering a car into something new. Unless we state otherwise, that's not really what we are after. Anyone who drives like a moron will confuse it. It drops to 6 quickly in drive to save fuel. Stick it in sport if you don't want that. Drive smoothly and the dsg is still world class. I've driven more modern dual clutches that are much worse.

HOOO HOO HOO BOY. Let's unpack this one. To be completely candid here, calling ANY Mk5 Volkswagen a GT-Car is outrageous and trying to call one that is honestly a joke.. Not even the Mk7 or Mk8 have gotten there yet (really). They may not have been going for the same demographic as people who wanted the smallest and most nimble and chuck-able hatch, but if they weren't trying to make a hot hatch, then why would they literally integrate a checkered flag into the logo of the model? I don't know what you call driving like a moron, but when I shift up or down, I would like a new gear, and I want it now, please and thank you.

Sport mode didn't do much for me in the moment, plus Haldex tunes can only really do so much compared to a better AWD setup out of the box. Higher OEM quality gets you further than most aftermarket solutions due to starting at a higher point.

Personally, I don't get the criticism of the DSG. If you want to drop a gear in a hurry, that's what the flappy paddle is for, I don't just bury the peddle in the carpet and hope for the best.

If you've driven old DSG (Mk5 era) vs the current crop of dual clutches, you'd be able to tell how antiquated the older units are to what's considered decent in 2022. Thanks for watching!

Newer clutch is more refined. Unheard of.

Was about to subscribe until I scrolled through the comments and saw the attitude in some of the responses regarding the DSG :( Good video nonetheless

It's hard not to feel backed up into a corner when the people that are tuned into this video are also die-hard fans that have such a locked in perspective (comment, after comment, after comment). We try to engage as much as we can (sometimes, YT doesn't notify us) and enjoy it much, much more when the engagement is positive (such is life sometimes). I appreciate the comment, and we strive to improve our video quality, presentation, and post-production. Hopefully we haven't lost you quite yet. But if we have, I apologize, and thank you for at least watching. -Gavin

No one arguably buys a R32 with the thought process of rear seat legroom, if it sees groceries bags or a happy dog that'll be the exent of its use, Lol.

HOW DARE YOU COMPARE A GTI TO A MKV R32? no clue what you're talking about. I have owned both the mk5 r32 and gti at the same time and they are not even close to being the same car. funny how when you where trying to talk shit about the dsg it prooved you wrong. mk4 r32 is a awsome car, but im sorry to say mk5 is such a better car. looks and drive. mk4 feels old and clunky. I feel your one sided opinion was awful.

Considering the MK5 R32 is supposed to be such a hot and enthusiast's car, it was a tall glass of meh. It was FINE trundling around, but was lackluster once you try to find a rhythm.
