Great Review and I love seeing my R32 brethren from across the pond. I love my MK4 R32. Much more Raw of a vehicle! To me the MK5 R32 is so much refined, smooth, but yet still quick!! Both motors were putting out 250hp.
@Daumex7 жыл бұрын
Mk4 was at 240 on launch, Mk5 was at 250 due to a better intake manifold. Other than that i believe the engines are identical.
@maveric07386 жыл бұрын
Daumex the MK4 R32 on paper was 240hp. But. It had the same exact motor as the MK1 Audi TT 3.2 at 250 hp. VW/Audi. Did this for marketing reason. They were afraid (at the time) that customers would not purchase the Audi TT3.2 if the R32 had same Horsepower as the Audi. Both motors from that generation are identical down to bore and stroke and compression!
@lazarushernandez58275 жыл бұрын
@@maveric0738 It was the U.S./North American version of the MKIV R32 that had the same motor as the MK1 TT 3.2. In other markets (Europe, UK) the MKIV R32 made 240hp. VWoA wasn't sure the R32 was going to sell over here what with it being $27-29,000, and the original 5000 allotment was to be spread over two years. For this reason they wanted to spend as little money as possible, so instead of certifying 2 versions of the 3.2L VR6 for the U.S. market, they just did the one in the Audi TT, as it wasn't a limited run of units and the higher price ($40,000+) and longer availability (04-06 in the U.S.) of the TT 3.2s absorbed that cost easier. To appease the TT customer, it was available only with DSG and advertised with 250hp while the R32 stuck with the 6 speed manual and claimed 240hp.

@wottevva7 жыл бұрын
The mk5 golf r32 is faster than its mk4 equivelent for my money, both in reality and in testing (like the top gear test track for example shows both times from both marques) due to dsg and other handling factors besides. But you dont buy a Golf R32 for a fast car, its not the fastest of its type out there by far. That heavy engine up front on the mk4 and mk5, the heavy wheels, heavy brakes = understeer with aggressive driving styles and is hard to scrub off that speed without brake fade (as i found out on a trackday). You buy it for a refined quick-enough convenient car that sounds something special under load. A drop the kids off mobile that then turns into dad or mums plaything :) You mentioned the Ferrrari/Golf r32 sound comparision Volkswizard hehe :) just if your curious check my channel as there is a vid i uploaded of me in my R32 behind a 458 Italia in convoy, id say he had the full orchestra, i had the 4 band quartet lol, but still we did make a glorious sound together when it bounced off walls.

volkswizard Do you have any thoughts regarding the CC, as compared to the r32? I'm a little apprehensive about the CC, but it is a lot of car (especially being more modern). Very interesting you suggested the MK5 r32 was comparable to a MK7 Golf - that they'd barely improved upon it in the 10 years of development since.
@volkswizard7 жыл бұрын
CC is a good car, a lot more low profile than an R32 so for many it wont be an alternative as it's not an R32 even though engine is similar. Depends on your perspective, as I am getting older one day soon I will look silly even in a Mk5 R32 so a more mature car with similar character will be welcome. Bare in mind Passat/CC is just a lengthened Mk5/6 Golf so not a significantly different car, electric parking brake will be the most obvious difference.

Having owned both, there’s no comparison between the more raw Mk4 vs the slightly softer and apologetic mk5. Mk5 has a ‘better’ interior technically speaking, but not necessarily a more special place to be sitting. Might just be the general tough rawness that oozes through the mk4 that dominates and leave the mk5 feeling too soft even though it’s technically better in almost every regard. Lil too mature

Nice comparison Andrew - thanks for making the video. Always liked both R32's and learnt a lot of the smaller details from this video. Only thing putting me off on the MK5 is the high running costs. Petrol isn't cheap and road tax is in the highest band > £520! (and no doubt it will keep going up every few years). I think this is the last chance to enjoy and run these NA higher output engines though before everything gets taxed to death by the government! Wish they still made a 6 cylinder Golf - the one thing that the BMW 1 series still has going for it.

Some early cars are still £305 road tax (pre March 2006) but I agree £500+ is silly but they aren't losing money at the moment so in the bigger picture they aren't expensive to own as depreciation is one of the bigger costs of motoring
@AJ_AJ-AJ-AJ_AJ7 жыл бұрын
Can't agree more on the road tax, it's not so bad on the mk4 but it's a bit over the top for mk5. Also, don't be put off by fuel cost it's not actually that bad you'll be surprised if you drive on motorways, that said, it does go down quickly if you drive around town revving the arse off it, but it's all how you drive it.

Thanks Jay, glad you enjoyed it, Mk4 or Mk5 R32, both are very special in their own ways.

Going down a rabbit hole now… jumped here after deciding I ‘need’ a charismatic manual golf, inspired by your CSS Brecon video! Remembered this video on this beautiful mk4 R32… 7:47 what did you call them?!? I misheard something very different😂

Durable cars were made from VW between 1998-2004 year. Golf V is victim of downsizing where economical and ecological aspects made it's scars. MKIV is a solid car with dashboard from soft leather imitation , this is better than hard platic used in GolfV. For me is Golf IV car where investing pais off.

I love both, I just got a MKV R32 a few months ago and before I had a Jetta GLI 24v VR6. Only thing I miss is the 6speed manaul transmission.

MK5 R32 all day :) I like the MK4, but MK5 is just insane.
@y4nnickschmitt5 жыл бұрын
I certainly hope that it is better then the mk4. What would be its purpose otherwise... I do however favor the mk4´s in/exterior. And since the engine is basically the same, it really comes down to the looks.

Mk4 is more fun their much better with a few mods👌as it looks standard in video and mk4s worth a lot more money than mk5s as not many left on the road👍cool vid tho😎

My mk5 r32 is now biturbo with dsg. Wouldn't change it for any VAG car on offer. It's the ultimate street car.

You can pop off the air ducks you just have to take off the bumpe, people always say they don’t do anything, but infact they have covers!

MK5 R32 for me : more modern, more comfortable, better interior, faster (especially with the brilliant DSG), better sound (stock), better balanced... the last VR6 Golf, ever.

JackNapier19 interior is better in a mk4 by miles! Not the last either a 3l turbo vr6 is in progress

Sorry but the MK5 R32 here in the United States was not any faster than the MK4 R32. In fact the MK4 had exactly/ identical engine than that of its brother MK1 Audi TT 3.2. U.S. spec R32's MAF is larger diameter ( 3" ID versus 2.75") and Airbox is different.

stevesje71, People aren't referring to which car rattles more when they say the MKIV R32's interior is better, a newer designed car should have better build quality from the get go and is younger overall. Heck I didn't think my 02 337 had any creaks or rattles, but when I got my 04 R32 (had both for 3 months) I could hear the creaks in the 337 when the new R32 had none. 14 years later I definitely hear the creaks and rattles in the R32 ;). People are referring to the what the interior was equipped with. It's going to depend on the market you are in, but in the U.S. like every other region the MKIV R32 got the meaty steering wheel and the Konig seats, these features set it apart from the MKIV GTI, even the 337 and 20th Anniversary Edition, which had their own special interior. The MKV R32 in the U.S. did not get anything special to differentiate its interior from that of a GTI. The steering wheel was the same, just swapped the GTI badge for the R. The lovely Recaros featured in the MKV R32 in this video were not offered as an option in the U.S.( they didn't have side airbags...that didn't stop some people from importing them on their own though).

I just got a mk4 2.0 I know 2.slow what ever but it completely stripped almost at 2500lbs and stage 2 tune and going to get a cam for it so going to push 160hp in the 2.0 and I tell you then engine has torque spins the tires in 2nd gear for a n/a 2.0 pushing 160 pulls hard.

Nice job mate, Very well done all round 👍🏾 even my 1.6 mk5 was proud. Only thing I didn't like is the new gearbox it's gotta be fully manual for me personally. I would still drive it no problem..

I have driven the newer iterations of the R series and my fourteen year old 04 R32 stills has a better tactile feel to it. I enjoy the stiffer ride and it communicates the road back to me much better then the newer R's Looks ? I love the two door R. A four door R32 is just not a sport car in many ways and the newer R's are heavier too. I guess you know where I stand
@garymathe98635 жыл бұрын
It still boggles the mind why they ever made a 4 door R. Totally runs the sporty look.

Never drove a Mk5 however I prefer the understated look of the Mk4 in comparison to the Mk5, bit too many shiney bits for me. I only gave mine up because of the rising insurance and Road Fund Licence. Definitely a car to measured in smiles per gallon and not miles.

1stly want to say great video, enjoyed the informative structure, stumbled onto ur video a day ago. I live in south africa and unfortunately we never got the mk iv r32 here so we got deprived of the raw experience. I purchased my mk5 r32 about 2months ago and must say after owning 5 vw cars and having the pleasure of driving in most of the gti models up to mk7 gti this is the first car where I could not stop smiling after driving it every time. Although 10yrs old I must say I can find relevance in ur comment about the mk5 r32 being close to the mk7. Yes its newer car but it will never have that special flair of the n/a v6 engin. Altho its just as expensive in our country to maintain I doubt il ever let go of my r32. Thnx so much. Best of luck with ur channel. U got a new sub.

@volkswizard7 жыл бұрын
Agreed but just think it doesn't actually go down in value, a newish performance car is cheap on tax but will lose £1000s per year (and unlikely to sound so good!)
