Great video. I've got a DSG Mk5 on a 57-plate (Jan '08), with just over 67k miles and it still feels brand new. I had it on a dyno recently and it's still kicking out 247bhp. Thanks for watching the video! I'd forgotten about Passat CC 3.6 (Passat R36 is more well known but still under most peoples' radar), CC sounds great go for it!
@neoionunder567 жыл бұрын
volkswizard Do you have any thoughts regarding the CC, as compared to the r32? I'm a little apprehensive about the CC, but it is a lot of car (especially being more modern). Very interesting you suggested the MK5 r32 was comparable to a MK7 Golf - that they'd barely improved upon it in the 10 years of development since.
@volkswizard7 жыл бұрын
CC is a good car, a lot more low profile than an R32 so for many it wont be an alternative as it's not an R32 even though engine is similar. Depends on your perspective, as I am getting older one day soon I will look silly even in a Mk5 R32 so a more mature car with similar character will be welcome. Bare in mind Passat/CC is just a lengthened Mk5/6 Golf so not a significantly different car, electric parking brake will be the most obvious difference.

Nice comparison Andrew - thanks for making the video. Always liked both R32's and learnt a lot of the smaller details from this video. Only thing putting me off on the MK5 is the high running costs. Petrol isn't cheap and road tax is in the highest band > £520! (and no doubt it will keep going up every few years). I think this is the last chance to enjoy and run these NA higher output engines though before everything gets taxed to death by the government! Wish they still made a 6 cylinder Golf - the one thing that the BMW 1 series still has going for it.
@volkswizard7 жыл бұрын
Some early cars are still £305 road tax (pre March 2006) but I agree £500+ is silly but they aren't losing money at the moment so in the bigger picture they aren't expensive to own as depreciation is one of the bigger costs of motoring
@AndrewTaylor-mk7jy7 жыл бұрын
Can't agree more on the road tax, it's not so bad on the mk4 but it's a bit over the top for mk5. Also, don't be put off by fuel cost it's not actually that bad you'll be surprised if you drive on motorways, that said, it does go down quickly if you drive around town revving the arse off it, but it's all how you drive it.

I am considering an R32 mk5, would someone who has owned answer the following questions for me: 1. Does a remap provide take out any flat spots in the rev range? 2. Will a remap improve the torque at all, or even the fuel consumption? 3. Where in the UK North England/Wales can anyone recommend to have such a car serviced? 4. How do they handle on UK B roads, do they corner well? 5. Can you work on these cars yourself in your garage? 6. Can the handling be improved in anyway (if needed)? 7. What are the most expensive problems to fix on these cars? 8. How does the paint work hold up with age (in 2018)? 9. Why are prices fairly low for such a special car? 10. Why do some people refer to them as being 'slow' - this does not put me off in the slightest as I have sat as a passenger in a mk4 r32 years ago and it felt quick from a standstill certainly not slow at all! Many thanks to anyone able to advise

A black MKV is a Euro MKV, and is geared differently than the US one.

Great video! Wondering if you've any plans on doing a similar video for the mk5 gti, a somewhat of a buyers guide of what to look for.

Golf r32 the only way I can describe that lovely 6 cylinders noise is " the angry elephant "

Immediately the mk5 just sounds more raucous and special doesnt it. I prefer the front bumper from the mk4 and the wheels, seats etc, but would have the mk5 engine. I think i've commented before on the haldex system - tis a shame they just couldnt engineer a full time system and am surprised theyre still using haldex, albeit a slightly more responsive version, in the mk7 Golf R.. I still dont think theyre ever going to be a match for a Subaru/Evo but i'm not sure they were aimed at that market as its dead. A friend had the 1.8t 150 and it went really well for a mk4 golf, it had a plush brown leather interior which looked great. Theyre really well made cars and i do have a soft spot for them, just a shame you cant fully disabled the TC for use of the handbrake to get that back end a bit loose. :).

IMO, Comparing two generations of golfs with different transmission ans quite same engine does not help to answer the question, which is best ? It will be nice to have both in manual or both in dsg .

Driven both cars (sure, not r32) and the golf mk5 feels like a new car in terms of chassis, dynamics, suspension, whereas the golf mk4 feels like an older car, mk3 like, in that the chassis torsions under strain, it is more wobbly. golf mk5 is much much more capable car.

Ok if you really want a 6 cylinder and can stomach the road tax, why not? But there are some nicer GTi editions available.

Hello Theo S, thanks for commenting. Glad you enjoyed it. Yes the older I get the more I like the Mk5 but neither is a bad choice :)

No disrespect to the MKV but the MKIV is the real .:R32. At Fastivus every year the MKVs get dusted at the track pure and simple. The MKIV stops from 60 in 108 feet!!! MKV is 134 feet. In US trim the MKV is 200 plus pounds heaver with only 10hp bump in stock trim. MKIVs have way more in the aftermarket to go fast. Good video but OP you said you couldn't make the MKIV better.... WTF!? First of all get a Competition Haldex controller\UM Haldex tune that keep the Haldex clutch disks engaged so under breaking the rear never disengages. MKV never had this upgrade. With IDF Tubular Control Arms (Not available for MKV) the steering response for the 4 increases and the breaking improves with the reduction in unsprung weight. If you stay N\A the MKIV has was more potential. The MKIV has more cam profiles available compared to the MKV. PURE AND SIMPLE!!! If you want either car and you car about MPGs, interior leg room, ride quality you are looking for the wrong car. A VW Executive I know told me the 4 was too hardcore for the masses so the softened up the 5.... And even that was still to hardcore for the masses. If you want a fun grocery getter=MK5. If you want a canyon carver that you can mod and bring the full potential out of at the track MKIV FTW!!

The Mk4 has a timeless, more classic look imo. The Mk5 looks hideous. But it does come with some improvements over its predecessor. However, the styling cues on the Mk5 do absolutely nothing for me... The bumper in the front, and with the chrome, blah
