My software development classes are in the business school building on my campus. Nearly every other student in my other classes are business majors, criminal justice majors, and other sad degrees. I was an accounting/finance major in the 80's as an undergrad. I got my CPA immediately thereafter. College was also a hell of a lot cheaper back then. So, in retrospect, my BS in BusAd was a good investment for me, as I have been regularly employed in accounting and finance since then. I think if you're not majoring in accounting or finance, however, and you go for real estate, marketing, or organizational behavior as an undergrad, you're probably wasting your time. So all business degrees are NOT worthless. In fact, said degrees are far more useful than liberal arts degrees to say the least. But, alas, at the cost of a college education today, STEM is your best bet to command control of your career and a good salary.

I worked at Big 4 accounting firms overseas: not a lot of foreigners, and most were sent overseas after starting stateside. To give you an idea, one company was about 1200 people with under 20 foreigners, the other was about 3000 people with again, under 30 foreigners. Point being: it’s hard to get and even if you get it, it’s a very unstable position.
@harveylin35482 жыл бұрын
Funny it's the opposite of tech companies in the state side: if you look at the dev side, there are a ton of 'foreigners' (and their descendants) and relatively few Americans. Really tells you something isn't it.

@@harveylin3548 If you are working overseas, you are essentially a glorified editor at these companies, and you will be eager to leave at the 1.5 to 2 year mark. It was like clockwork with the foreigners.

@@harveylin3548 that results in a pretty big brain drain in countries overseas. If you want to come oversees, do it now. Salaries are low outside of US but its cheaper to go to university. Studying in US (high tuition fees) and working outside of US (lower salary) is stupid. In addition to that employers like to give priority to students who graduated in their local university rather than the ones who have foreign degrees. Therefore, if you want to come oversees, come now. Study in a country where you like the most and work in the same country. If you want to stay in US, stay there. US have higher salaries than almost all other countries (other than few like Switzerland, Norway and Luxembourg but their living cost is way way high). If you want to earn big bucks, US is the best.
@97856334256572 жыл бұрын
It's very difficult to get an H1B visa to work legally in the US even if you're from European Union. Therefore I decided to rather go to European University. where the tuition is 10.000 USD per whole masters and I can work and stay they with minimal paperwork. In US it would be a lot of hassle.

Depends what you mean by worthless. Will you learn to be the next Elon Musk (or anything close to it)? No, absolutely not. Will you become super educated and smart to impress your friends? Also no. Will you learn the fundamentals of accounting and finance, which will enable you to get a job, likely a higher paying one than average? Yes, I literally just did it in the last year and a half. And you guys all paid for it seeing as I used the GI bill, not me, so all the whining about how school isn't worth the cost doesn't apply to people that find ways to not pay. My job is 1/4 as hard as the army was and pays 4x as much. Business school is a good option for those that aren't smart enough for or inclined to do STEM... just major in accounting or finance. I know we live in an era where everyone, right, left, and center treats people who are employed for a living like they're dumb losers, but the reality is that's the human condition for at least 95% of people. It's not feasible that everyone can be an entrepreneur or make a living saying BS on the internet. The more money you make and the younger in life you make it, the sooner you can escape the rat race altogether. Business school can enable that for some people... if you have a better idea, great, do it. If you don't and you won't make it through the college of engineering, then business school is an option. Just don't be one of these suckers that pays 80k+ for a bachelor's degree. Join the air national guard or something for christ sake... you'll hardly do anything and college will be free. It's quite simple.
