I have a good friend who swam and won a Gold medal as part of the US Olympic team. She said the East German swimmer were monsters. Their voices were very masculine and they had hair growing on their backs and faces. Sound like a red flag. They beat the system but were most definitely dirty.
@georgeplagianos6487

Wow that's some experience your friend had. Women transitioning into muscle monsters.. now we have this transgender issue with still biological males that haven't fully transitioned and measuring a lower testosterone count but how could they still allowed them to participate in women sports. It's very confusing.. how do we put that in perspective is there an analogy here with drugs turning women with more male traits. And today in the year 2000s men are transitioning into women but still have the same muscular structure as men it's a real mind blower and it doesn't sound fair. Well on that note why don't they drop the mail and female swim team all together and just have a unisex swim team see how many women are going to win the sports. I'll bring a lot of brouhaha to the issue instead of being steamrolled by The advocates

Why weren't the gold and silver medals, awarded to the two female East German swimmers at the 1976 summer Olympics in Montreal, recalled (when the weightlifting medal given to the same country's athlete was) and the rightful champion, Nancy Garapick of Canada, vaulted to her legitimate place as the gold medalist. I wrote to the Canadian Olympic Committee about this scandal and didn't even receive a reply. As recently as this year's Paris Olympics, a Canadian commentator, in the heat featuring Canadian Kylie Masse, listed the five Canadian women (and their rank) who had received medals in this event throughout history, named Garapick as having won a bronze medal. Why hasn't this injustice been corrected and named Garapick as the clean swimming champion that she was?

Croatia vs USA in Barcelona OI , how Croatian players felt when they played against ( like you said ) - mutants who were obviusly twice as big compared to skinny Croatians ? and guess what Croatians never complained and made documentaries about how USA had advantage in every aspect .. and Croatians and other teams congrats USA team . East Germany was nothing special , from where they get doping ?! From West , in Western part of Germany and world labs were developed to produce those drugs , that's the fact . It's highly immoral to accuse one nation and whole eastern bloc for cheating , while you are cheating yourself , and it was known among players that in West Bloc doping was more prevalent . Do they use doping in Cuba today ? Coaches need to mix sugar and water due to lack of money to give them proper glycogen replenishment . Still Cubans are winning because they are talented and have good sports system from childhood selection etc . I am totaly against communism and other totalitarian regimes thou , but they had superior sport system and invested a lot of money into their sports back in the day . The East Germans were well ahead of their time with their doping system since it was government/state sponsored. The US never had anything remotely close to that level; their success was due to numerous swim clubs throughout the country and collegiate level swimming. Those athletes were considered amateurs and pretty much had to find their own funding during their swimming careers (unlike today where athletes can obtain corporate sponsorship).

@@_M_V_ Yes, doping is more prevalent now. But, I am referring to the 1970's and early 80's when the EG doping system was 2nd to none. The obvious signs showed in their muscular and over bulked athletes particularly the female swimmers and track athletes. They clearly had bodies similar to males. During that time, you just didn't see that with US athletes. This isn't to say doping didn't exist within the US, but not on a national scale similar to the Eastern Bloc nations.

Four Seasons With all the respect, you are too naive. First of all, you don’t need to look like the hulk to be on steroids. Second, USA athletes almost always have had almost the same results as the athletes from other nations that have been caught “cheating”(I don’t know if it really is cheating since everyone is using anabolics). Everyone is using them, they have been invented since the 20s(early forms of testosterone, not like nowadays). It’s just a matter of who’s being caught using them or, better put, who they want to be caught using them.

Most of the comments posted here are at best annoying and in actuality highly self-centered. This documentary is not about a small specific group of people. This is about a major problem that has affected all of sport for decades. All of us who have trained for years and continually got our clock cleaned by drug users every time we competed have the same story to tell. These girls are no different than tens of thousands of other athletes in that respect. You people that always need to personalize this stuff need to come out of your little caves and stop feeling sorry for yourself and think you are something special because you dealt with a little "adversity". Welcome to the real world with the rest of us.

Nobody wrote anything about the East Germans because the virtually lived in a world of their own called the communist bloc. And nobody had any solid evidence of doping until the E German secret police files were found after the fall of the wall. Even then, like some notable athletes in the west, none of their stars were connected to doping on the files although we know the Statsi doped children as young as 12 who they thought were athletically gifted so it is highly improbable that Koch and the others did their times unaided by chemical enhancers. at 13:54 that's the 100m Backstroke podium with Nancy Garapick from Canada winning bronze behind Brigitte Treiber and Ulrike Richter of East Germany. 4th, 5th place were Wendy Cook-Hogg, and Cheryl Gibson of Canada...If the East Germans were disqualified for doping, Canada would have had a 1,2,3 sweep!

If someone doped me without my knowledge, I win Olympic Gold, later I learn I unintentionally cheated, then I would mail, hand deliver or somehow give my gold medal to the next finisher who did not cheat. None of the East Germans have done that. That's amazing. None of them have the personal integrity to return what they wrongly won.

Exactly, Pamela!

The American women also had imposing musculatures in the 1970s. Members of the relay, also had deep voices. Cut to almost 50 years later, Katie Ledecky also has a very deep voice! When she won her first gold medal, she improved her time by over 10 seconds. At the 1978 worlds, Cynthia Woodhead of USA beat the GDR swimmers, then vanished by the early 80s?! The USA has never been clean, either!

I think sometimes it's just natural masculinity of such women, who because of it have an advantage in early teenage years already. The women tend to be taller and generally more masculine appearing than the average woman. Ledecky is 6 ft tall and basically since childhood had a pattern of male baldness.

why havent the USA been stripped of all the medals and world records of Flo Jo, Jones, Carl Lewis? are you really so naive to think the Eastern Bloc were ahead of the West in anything during the Cold War with all that was at stake? The USA are still at it as is Russia, only a few years ago top US athletic training programme the Oregon project was exposed for doping including multiple Olympic champions and medalists from last few Olympics. Did it never cross your mind the west boycotted Moscow and the Eastern Bloc boycotted LA84 as they knew they couldnt prevent their athletes being tested? the IOC failed to publish the test results of many top athletes at LA or Seoul including the 2 most successful US gold medallists to avoid scandals exposing western gold medallists.

It's a good question. The IOC is messed up and conservative--they are hesitant to go back *that* far (IMO) and strip medals from 40+ years ago and set a precedent. But the East German program was *so* egregious--they flouted the law *so* flagrantly (FS, one of the EG women ended transitioning to be a man, and not really by choice) that I kind of think they should.

It would cool if we had 2 Olympics, 1 for clean athletes and another for doping athletes, it would be interesting to see how advanced the science can evolve, I'm a bif Tour de France fan and imo it was alot more exciting around the Armstrong era when they went full bore everyday in the mountains, it can get a bit boring now when a rider gets a 2 minute lead overall and just keeps it for 2 weeks, Dope Olympics would be dope, might be hard to keep them under control though.
