According to Memory Alpha, the intended warp speed scale would put, for example, Warp 5 at around 7.11 times slower than Warp 9. That'd be like being able to travel 70mph down a motorway here in the UK and then being told all cars had to go no faster than 10mph. You can get from London to Rome, for example, in about a day if you drove non-stop. Imagine finding out that, after doing journeys like that for decades, those journeys will now take a week. I don't think it would affect everyone (smaller ships always seem to have slower top speeds in TNG), but that initial thought of, like "urgh, it's going to take us a month to get back to Earth now instead of 4 days?" has got to suuuuuck

I would suspect (and this is purely 'head canon') that those older ships (like the NX) did MORE damage at those slower warp speeds than the later ships do at slower warp speeds. Cruder engines & nacelles probably 'bend space' more roughly (worse spacial distortion), emitted more radiation, and so on. Whereas the later warp drives were more refined & 'gentle' on space than their predecessors.

The vulkans used warp travel far longer then the humans. Why did they never found this problem?
@vaska007624 жыл бұрын
Their warp drive was much slower than 24th Century warp and there was also a warp factor scale change in the 24th Century which made it logarithmic and also meant that a warp 10 would be infinite speed. My guess is that it wasn't until the much, much more powerful warp drives of the late 23rd and early 24th century that the issue became apparent. The Vulcans barely made much in the way of warp drive progress through hundreds of years, so many ships wouldn't really go past warp 3 during the 20th Century. Indeed, it also took earth a long time. Nearly 40 years between The Phoenix doing it's warp 1 flight and warp capable starships being built. Nearly 70 years until warp 2.
@develynseether44264 жыл бұрын
Vaska is right but here's a little more info. Vulcan ships pre-Federation could go a maximum of warp 7 in the old scale (warp 5.5 in new scale) but as explored space was much smaller and Vulcans live longer they had no need to travel fast regularly plus their warp drives weren't half as powerful. Constitution-Class like the original Enterprise NCC-1701 had a maximum safe speed of warp 6 (warp 5 new scale) with a max speed of warp 8 (6.5 new scale) again with less powerful engines than the latter half of 24th Century.

To everyone saying this episode had no lasting repercussions on the franchise - it did. Voyager has the moving nacelles so they can create a more stable warp field that causes less damage to subspace, and I believe somewhere it's mentioned the Enterprise E utilizes even more advanced tech to no longer require the moving nacelles, but still has a smaller impact on subspace than older ships. Sure, it's usually only mentioned in passing that warp damages subspace, but tech going forward in the series is adjusted to have a smaller effect. If you want to take the allegory for climate change further, it's like slowly changing over time to (slightly) clean energy. Star Fleet still hasn't quite gotten it completely figured out, but they're doing everything they can do minimize the damage.

I live in the Hekaras Corridor. My name is Rabal. I'm 27 years old. I believe in taking care of my space, and a balanced diet and a rigorous exercise routine. In the morning, if my face is a little puffy, I'll put on an ice pack while doing my stomach crunches. I can do a thousand now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply a kanar masque which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion. There is an idea of a Rabal. Some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me. Only an entity. Something illusory.
