I have the weird feeling that most of what other players consider issues on GTA4 are exactly what make me like the game. A darker story, with funny parts added only for breaking the ice. The heavier cars' physics and not having extreme car explosions just for the sake of having an explosion. A smaller but more detailed and dense location. Less customization, which seems cool to have a lot of options at first, but I've never touched it again on GTASA as I reached the max respect. Maybe the only real issue, not related to personal preferences, was about the performance.

Honestly the game only got good after being 10+ years old. People praise if today but when it launched they received alot of flack cause most people including myself though it sucked. It was random and out of left field even the radio stations sucked ass lol But I agree it aged fantastically but I wish people would remember what it was at Launch before saying it was the best ever
@MJ-uk6lu Жыл бұрын
@@mikehunt8247 Why random? The only random thing is that it was first non-American GTA game. It's all about Slavic people infighting and solving their problems with violence. It had strong Eastern European vibes, even in Liberty City (NY). People weren't ready for that perhaps, but it wasn't exactly random. And radio stations with songs made sense, it was also a bit unusual, because it's the only GTA game to feature Eurovision (Diki tanci by Ruslana) song and have artist be a host of radio station as well. That's kinda cool and suitable. Other radio station instead of slavic music focused on something that is close to NY culture - gangbanger rap. Other tracks were US classics and things that immigrant from Eastern Europe would have likely heard before. Other stations tried to portray rasta culture... Really, radio stations were formed not because they necessarily sound good, but because they reflect in game gangs, New York (Liberty City) and Niko Bellic. The funny part is that nothing was exactly Serbian there, however the whole game was made to appeal to US audience mostly, so it was dumbed down and instead of being genuinely authentically Serbian, it instead became sort of generic stereotypically Slavic.

@MJ-uk6lu Жыл бұрын
@@mikehunt8247 I did, I won't change my points. I don't think that launch was that bad. Really, the only big problem was performance problems, which were never resolved. X360 struggled to achieve 30 fps, often dipping to 15 fps and it still does, PS3 was basically the same. PC port was terrible and still is and it was basically barely functional with Core 2 Quads or Core 2 Extremes. It still ran poorly on i7s and FX chips and it only runs decently well on Zen+ and Skylake era chips. Not to mention that GPUs were also badly inadequate at the time as well. You basically need GTX 970 at minimum to avoid bad FPS drops or cutting draw distance and GTX 970 still has FPS drops. So you need something closer to GTX 1080 for actually great experience. Disabling shadows and reducing draw distance seem to be fixing GPU performance issues, however, there's no fix for CPU performance issues, you basically only can compensate terrible programming with buying stronger single threaded CPUs. On modern high end systems it functions mostly great, but just for context, it's a lot more problematic than what Crysis was and Crysis had settings that solved performance issues unlike GTA 4.

SA had tons of places to spend money on, because you were corrupt CJ, who did anything for money. 4 was about traumatized man, who wanted to see his friends, seek answers in life and just rebuild life, so that's why you don't have opportunities for random capitalism, just helping out your friends, going out with them. 5 is SA reboot mostly, but it's an exaggerated satire, full of psycho characters and thus you have crazy purchase options, running illegal "businesses" buying expensive shit, with deliveries. In 3 you were just dumb gangbanger and you just did your job, nobody cared if you died or not, so your feeble existence was reflected in pointless money accumulation with nowhere to spend it and limited healing options, since you were always on the run.

The problem is that belongs to GTA series and it was different from them so it wasn't as most of fan expected it to be (arcade missions, colorful and cartoonish characters and dialogues, happy endings..), but if we see it as a separate game it was a masterpiece. It was more realistic than any other game from all aspects (physics, environment, characters, consequences of actions..) it showed the reality of crime life with all its ugliness.

Rockstar went in a different direction with GTA IV, the developers said that things in San Andreas would not make sense in this game. Which is fair enough to make the game cohesive, but to compensate, two DLCs were released to complement the main game, not only in terms of story, but activities and things to do. The 3 games complement each other.
@nikobowling1606 Жыл бұрын
@Catmobster7586 Precisely why the developers chose not to implement this in the game, GTA IV has a more serious, sad and dark storyline, Dan houser did not want Niko to look like a clown during custcenes like CJ. Implementing a haircut and beard absolutely randomly, makes sense for more arcade games like GTA V AND San andreas, but not for 4. Hell, it makes no sense for you to complain about it, customization of this kind didn't exist in the first games. GTA IV is an indirect continuation of GTA 3, not San andreas. Going back to the roots as a dark and serious game like 3 was.

you know, a step backwards isn't that much of a big deal to me compared to a huge upgrade it makes up for it. i mean in GTA SA, i knew i could play in casinos, give away my money, have a haircut, dye your hair, swimming races, and all of that, but i never really bothered doing all of those minor activities, because i just didn't care, most of them were kinda boring to me when i played those side activities and didn't really felt like it affected the gameplay that much anyway. it felt like bonuses in the game that i could've easily ignored, and the game itself would've been the same, and that's what i felt in GTA IV. i only participated in races because i love driving in gta games. and at least that, they still have it in GTA IV, it wouldn't really be a GTA Game without Driving Races. And with all of the side minor activities from gta sa gone in gta iv, it still feels like only very little has changed, the only thing i wish GTA IV had from GTA SA was more customization with vehicles and your character, because i love decorating myself and my car and making it look stylish and proper, but that's pretty much it because i just love fashion, i don't care about playing pool, i do care about washing my car though, i hate it when my Pink Feltzer Car that I stole from Gracie is looking pretty dirty when it's suppose to be a very beautiful vehicle. and some youtuber say, GTA IV has implemented the most useless feature, the Car Wash, when I, a clean freak, literally use it all the time when I need to make my car look shiny and clean. at least, there are still clothes and suits to wear and paint colors to paint my vehicle, and if that's what we can have, then that's what i will accept. GTA IV made me learn to accept the things I have instead of wanting more and being an ungrateful brat. I don't think any game has done that to me before.

I will be controversial, but the game's story was simple and overall, not particularly interesting either, if you look at it without nostalgia glasses. The main plot is great, yes, but recall that the walkthrough is long, approximately 100 missions and most of them do not progress Nico and Roman's lives virtually at all. The main story could have been told in 10-15 missions, while the remaining ones are filler, comic relief or average, random stuff at best. There is also no sense of career progression whatsoever, like we saw in Vice City or SA, or even turbulent story progression, like in GTA5. Even GTA3 was giving you missions from bosses that were more and more powerful every time, to the point of almost becoming a made man, whereas in GTA4 it only happens with the Italian mob and not even to that extent. We are doing missions for low level Irish punks, for second-tier, half-broke Italian mobsters, for some gym-obsessed nobody and for a few other lowlifes, with a few exceptions. At the end, Nico is practically at the same place as 90 missions earlier, just with a bit of money saved up from being a low-tier muscle for hire. That's not what I expect from a long story. Moreover, missions' gameplay was also average and repetitive: drive somewhere, whack a guy, a shootout will follow and then you shake off the cops. Compare it to the fun and varied missions in SA, GTA5 or even TBOGT, so it's not like Rockstar didn't know hot to make very entertaining missions before or even at the time of GTA4. Add to that the depressing and sad climate of the game, unlike any other GTA. Even TLAD, although dark, had this unique badass, biker climate in it, whereas the climate in GTA4 was simply sad, without anything more. At first it looked like it would be Russian-mob themed, but very quickly that part was shifted to the sideline. People play videogames to unwind, not to be reminded every two minutes that the American dream is a lie and that the world is corrupt and fake: we already know that, that's precisely one of the reasons why we play games like GTA. All these things considered, you may still love this game, but don't be surprised if most people don't feel like going back to or even like finishing this game. It simply doesn't offer you much reason to do it. Even myself have replayed every GTA game except for this one. I finished GTA4, gave it a solid 7 out of 10 and that's it. It's not bad, it's just average at best for a GTA. Sorry, but there are obvious reasons why this game is almost never mentioned, when fans talk about their favorite Grand Theft Auto games.

The whole point of the GTA games is to commit crimes and become successful. This is where GTA 4 falls flat. I have nothing against the ‘crime doesn’t earn’ message, but it shouldn’t be in a game like GTA. Rockstar chose to have a deep message over fun and in my opinion, it didn’t pay off. For some reason the popular opinion on the internet is to act like this is the greatest game of all time. It’s baffling to me how people can still call this game underrated, when 90% of every GTA 4 related video is people saying this is the greatest GTA of all time.

@@adriansessoms6081 Thanks. Yes, I totally agree that there is a GTA5 fatigue, as Rockstar has gotten lazy on GTA Online money and this game is still playable enough to go back to and call it a classic. There have also been extremely few good, real-life sandbox games in the last 10 years, as most gamers choose online shooters or a complete, fantasy escapism. Let's hope Mafia 4 and GTA 6 change the landscape a little bit.

The driving was a learning curve at first. But once you get it it’s not bad. It’s just more work and you can go full speed everywhere you go. But at least when you have missions where you have to chase people they don’t go as fast as well

One thing that many people don't understand about GTA IV, is that Rockstar just wanted to go in a different direction. It may seem like a downgrade from San Andreas to you, but that's only because the two games have different ideas and proposals. For me, what makes GTA IV my favorite is precisely its simplicity, coupled with a super explorable and lively city. If you don't like it, fine, go play the other games in the franchise that are more to your taste. But don't make comparisons like "gta iv doesn't have this, gta san andreas has this", learn to like the game for what it is, not for what you would like it to be.
@greenwizard7592 Жыл бұрын
The thing is, it shouldn’t have gone in a different direction. GTA 4 doesn’t really feel like a GTA game to me. The point of the GTA games is to become successful by committing crimes. GTA 4 is not about that, it’s about the negative and unfun side of crime. I think this is weird, because games are supposed to be fun. GTA 4 chose deliberately to not be fun, so I could push a simple message

And San Andreas is just a better game, they're in the same franchise so it's perfectly fine to compare to the two.

The real reason why "map" is small is because of disc space and time. It was stated by Dan Houser on interview that they already wanted to make LC bigger with including the rest of around NY in it. Including forests and hills, which was given in GTA 5. Too many games were being made at that time that they had to drop some corners of not making GTA 4 on the level of GTA 5. And it was following realistic story about how struggle of earning is like in reality. Buying properties is uneccesary because majority of "community" you mentioned don't even care to even be "living" on those places. You cannot do anything in than watching TV and change clothes. Most were just choosing CJ's house or one of SF-LV houses, the rest around the map was unused and even they reused same interiors on most places. RDR2 addressed this same which is why getting for a dollar rentable room is fittable in the game world (which is basically GTA 4 2.0 and made a lot of money). In RDR1 you can buy properties, which in RDR2 can't. They dropped that feature out because it's very lame to them. And plus majority of players don't even spend much in properties in GTAO, they just exit outside and do brainless grinding and having fun. GTA 4 mp is far better because it's not addicting and it's based on fun. There are no big rewards for reaching 10 rank because... Well, they cared for everyone not to be addicted on grinding.

First time you can shoot 360 from driver's position and first time you can use taxi. Also, wanted level can be lost after exiting the circle. Also first time you have multiple choices. Also first time you can hang out with characters AFTER you finish the game. But yea, it'd be cool if you had Harrier, attack chopper, heat seeking manpads, racings, jets, indistructable tanks and few more things. It has charm of it's own. If we talk about GTA SA vs GTA 4 We are comparing apples and oranges here.

GTA IV is an interesting game. It has some of the best world building, atmosphere and storytelling in the series and it's probably the most fun game in the series to free roam and mess around in due to how much fun the euphoria ragdoll physics are and because the game doesn't have as much bullshit as the other GTA games have with its enemy AI. With that said however, GTA IV is probably the worst in the entire series content wise. There's not a single main mission or piece of side content that is fun in this game. All of the missions in the game are extremely basic, repetitive and tedious to play through and they almost never spice it up with anything new. The worst part is that the missions in GTA IV never get better, it's not like in San Andreas where the missions starts off very basic and simple but as you'd progress, you'd get more action packed and varied missions. This is why GTA IV becomes an absolute chore to play through, especially in its third act where Niko is working with the mafia families in Alderney. And don't even get me started on the side content. There was so much variety and fun side activities to do in the 3D era GTA games and there was an actual reason to participate in them due to completing them granted the player stat upgrades, rewards and new abilities. In GTA IV most of them are either removed and no longer give you rewards or they're just straight up worse than 3D era like Vigilante for example. The biggest issue is that for the most part, you'll participate in hangouts with friends and girlfriends. Now this doesn't sound like a bad idea in hindsight, however once you realize that most of the hangout activities are just things you can do during free roam alone, the hangouts become a chore, especially after you've already done all the activities the game has in store for you. GTA IV is far from a bad game, it has some of the best things the series has to offer however the things it does bad is also some of the worst things the series has to offer. The mission design and side content is honestly such a glaring flaw for me that it's literally the only reason why I put GTA IV below SA and V.
@fredster594 Жыл бұрын
@Catmobster7586 What's wrong with GTA IV's free roam?
@fredster594 Жыл бұрын
@Catmobster7586 When I mean free roam I don't mean activities or side content, I mean the open world free roam where you cause mayhem without cheats and other modification. The reason why I think IV is the best in that regard is simply because GTA IV is a much more balanced game in terms of difficulty compared to the 3D GTAs and GTA V which made rampaging, police chases and commiting crimes a lot more fun and fair. In 3D GTA and V, there are many instances where you'd just get insta killed over some random bullshit like a car running you over or enemies having pin point accuracy to the point where you have barely any time to react.

The thing with Niko is he is a ready made character with back grounds of an off screen war that has little to do with the story except finding Darko and also a human trafficking hypocrite who says he hates crimes but still traps Gracie for the diamonds and kills the honest charitable Lawyer offering jobs just because that poor man wanted to expose Francis's corruption, Niko does everything for money. Also he is ready made and there is nothing you can do to his personality, but with 3D era protagonists you get the feeling of raising your own son making them learn stuff like martial arts watching them grow from gangsters to rich and powerful business man you see all parts of the progress of their life, but with Niko you just get to be a part of a portion of his life also 3D gtas had so many side stuff like VCS you could take over enemy gang biz and make them your own assets and so much more, but 4 after the story ends there is nothing to do, no challenges or parachuting form mountains, its just a dull nd boring monotonous city, hanging with friends gets repetitive, the mission structures of GTA 4 itself is repetitive chase, kill, escape cops, no diverse missions like in VCS Boomshione Blowout getting past explosive debris. Ultimately we are playing games not watching movies, feature wise 4 cut out too much stuff and if story is more important Mafia 2 does it better in every aspect than any GTA game ever made, and all GTAs have good stories of their own not just 4!

If they ever remake 4 it will sell really well I believe. GTA 5 also felt more like San Andreas adding back more rpg elements which I also believe fans wanted

I remember when GTA IV came out I was shocked by the amazing attention to detail the devs had, the game felt really "focused" from the first playthrough and the changes made from the previous titles where conscious decision aimed at polishing the experience and help immersing you in the atmosphere and story (at least it felt that way to me). With GTA V seemed they took multiple steps back, it felt more "insicure" about itself, needing to bring back way to much silliness and "filler content" to please as much people as possible (which it did). To this day I still enjoy playing through GTA IV (and the EFLC) from time to time, while I can't say the same for GTA V.

my first GTA was Vice City. it was summer after 2nd or 3rd grade, me and my friends discovered it on a nearby computer shop on our neighborhood. we watched this guy play it and we laugh out loud whenever the guy rams the pedestrians using a car. after that we played it ourselves and had fun with it then I heard San Andreas thru my brothers story about it when he played it in a computer shop at the downtown area of our place where my brother's high school university is located. then soon a new computer shop opens nearby with new games including San Andreas. I had my turn to play it but mostly random stuffs and didnt do any missions (similar to vice city, I didnt do missions until im older). when it was my time to go to High School, same school my brother went. Ive been exposed to many computer shops that offers new games. it was 2008 and I saw GTA 4. it was all brand new for me and very different from the past GTA entries, I only played a couple of multiplayer modes with my classmate but didnt played GTA 4 that much. fast forward to 2023. I have played Vice City and San Andreas most and had fun with it, even finishing the game numerous times on mobile, Pc and the definitive Editions and just now I started playing GTA 4 and finished the storyline, I have yet to explore the city to fully enjoy it but I can say that GTA 4's mission storyline is worth repeating. in my observation, since GTA 4 is the HD version of GTA 3 (liberty City), Claude and Niko has similarities, they dont do big things on their own and just rely on the commands/plans of others.

I think it was because that while story-wise it's a good game (and this is talking in hindsight), but the story and characters were too alien. GTA has always been about Americans chasing the American high. Also, there was also a plethora of famous voice actors who voiced the main characters. Suddenly there was an Eastern European and a load of unknown voice actors. So it broke with things that made GTA appealing. Also, maybe people didn't relate to Niko because his backstory was so specific.

Definitely my favourite GTA story, but the thing that bothers me is that Niko WAS really a hypocrite. He helped out Roman clear his debtby threatening the people who were in debt to Vlad. No matter how much one tries to justify it (or doesn't), you realize that Niko has ended way more lives than Darko and shows no remorse while doing so, and that cutscene really drives that point home. I guess it contributes to his personality.

GTA IV is my most favorite game of all time. I love the deep story and I got hooked when I was a teenager right away. Maybe I got to love it so much also because I live in Eastern Europe (Slovakia) and it was always my dream to move to New York (and still is). The story highlights how it’s not so easy and that the American dream sounds too sweet to be true. I think that’s why the story resonates with me a lot to this day.

I think a lot of the issues with driving were framerate related. GTA IV, like all previous GTA games, wasn't designed for 60 FPS, but 30 FPS instead. The physics, although maybe not purely realistic as some people claim they are, gave the game a nice learning curve that stepped up the difficulty a bit from the simpler "plug and play" style of the 3D era. I personally love it, although I can understand why some don't.

Instead of Alderney, we could of had the Long Island of GTA IV & explore more of Liberty State hell we would even gotten a railroad that runs from East Island to Algonquin/Broker. He could of also had a Staten Island and the entire map of Liberty City would be complete! He would've gotten more adventures around Liberty, different missions, and even fly around Liberty!

You don't need to change the games CPU affinity to complete the last mission - just put a frame limiter in Nvidia Control panel at 60fps and it works just fine.
