The freedom of making jokes like mocking companies, corporations, politics, and other city officials just like the “clucking bell ad song” is a very good point you brought up. I really like hearing radio ads in gta online and the way rockstars make the ads say outrageous things that are literally just messed up messages that ironically are about real corporations, business and how governments think. It’d be terrible if little things like this weren’t in the game and frankly it gives the game its own real word feeling that’s great and amusing.

interesting to see in-game TV shows alongside brands for various pieces of in-game merchandise like cars and clothing lines get parodies... but we've steadily gotten an increase of licensed music ever since GTA3... to the point certain songs had to be omitted in future rereleases like Michael Jackson's in Vice City. It's a shame for console owners, but can be easily added in unofficially with PC mods, as mentioned with the car mods.

What's funny is that there actually was real world brands in a GTA game. In the original releases for GTA V, the menu for the Lucky Plucker actually has real life drink brands like Barq on it. Of course, these were removed in the Enhanced versions onwards since it's likely it was done without Rockstar's knowledge and they didn't want to get sued by those brands in real life.

The biggest thing was FBI from all Gta games to FIB in Gta 4 . Anyway changes to names in city neighbourhoods didn't start in Gta 3 it started in the original Gta 2d topdown series as most evident in Gta London 69 with Brixton being Brixham two totally different places . Brixton is in inner city London and has been associated with riots and other social upheaval while Brixham is a coastal town where next to nothing happens except maybe after hours on weekends .

Copyright is the short answer. But, companies wouldn't want their brands associated with a crime game. In the case of simulators like ETS2 and ATS, they are more suited toward realism like truck driving and the licensing for the trucks like MAN or Freightliner have strict requirements and if those aren't met, those brands can be removed. This is why SCS Software for example is against paid mods because those trucks aren't officially supported by them and runs the risk of losing a license to that particular truck manufacturer.

There were the real life brands that were in one of the GTA games but got switched out in an update, I want to say GTA 4 or 5 for their fictional counterparts. It's not just copyright, it's licensing and restrictions, and let's use cars for example. If Ford got in GTA they'd be fully allowed to go you want our cars in game, no running over pedestrians, no using cars to commit crimes, et al. ANd R* would have to sign the contract and abide by those terms to have Ford in the game, yes. So no, not worth it at all to sacrifice what makes GTA, well, GTA, to get real brands in the games

reasons I believe real life car manufactures don't want to be feature in GTA games for many restrictions to the licensing contracts. - The car manufacturers don't want to be added in games about crime since GTA games are mostly have crime related features. Toyota is a good example of why we dont see them in Need for speed games due to not wanting to promote street racing. - Vehicle manufactures don't allow for their cars to be damaged and destroyed in video games since many racing games downgrade this to scratches to the paint. Sure GTA 5 downgrade on deformation made the cars which I didn't like about that damage system. - Licensing is very expensive and most of the time games get delisted from store fronts like steam after the licenses expire which is why using fictional cars tend to be safe from this issue. - Certain car manufacturers are against modifying vehicles like Ferrari for example of not allowing this and will even go after people who do this. - Weaponized vehicles is another reason we don't see real life brands attaching guns to our cars.

The in-game brands are a fantastic addition and add so much in terms of overall immersion! If the multiverse theory is real, then I have no doubt that the GTA Universe could also be real! And all of the in-game brands, cities and states like Liberty City, Los Santos, Leonida and San Andreas do exists within that parallel reality. 🌎
