Niko is the best protagonist I have ever played in any GTA game, even playing so many other GTA's they put a lot of love into the backstory and and character of Niko, and I haven't seen that since. Even in the older characters before GTA 4. Maybe I am wrong maybe someone else has a better opinion than me, if so tell me where I am wrong. I am fine with being told where I messed up. I know I didn't add much in the way of info but I don't really feel the need to when most of us have already played those games a plethora of times.

as a romanian, my guess is that they didnt want to clearly say "niko is serbian" or sth like that. lets not forget the haitian/cuban controversies in vc, when some people were offended based on the remarks used, and r* had to suffer monetary consequences. id never judge a cuban based on a fictional story in a game, but whatever... and so, they probably decided to omit that. plus, being strangers to eastern european territory, didnt want to repeat the mistake, and then have insulting comments about that country. like lets not solve one prob and create 2 others😂 sure, they threw in a few hints here and there, but they basically left it up to the player decide what nationality niko is. as with gta3, it was technically difficult to focus on claudes voice as well after they had an entire story to figure out; story-wise, the players choice: hes mute, or he had an accident after the shooting, or he doesnt know eng, and many other theories. probably they focused on how niko is defined as a character, what decisions he makes and what his motives are and less about his nationality. theoretically, after the dissolution, citizens gained citizenship of the new state based on where they were born and what country that place now belongs to or where they grew up. since we dont know the exact location of where niko was born or raised, we dont know that for sure. what we do know is that he was born in yugoslavia and had yugoslavian citizenship once😂 for me, as a romanian, a latin-influenced state surrounded by slavic states, thought as a child that niko was russian, bcz i dont distinguish between slavic languages (no offense). and from games/movies and such, russians were more often portrayed than balkans. cool idea, but risky😂 but see the community is full of friendly people, so thats nice. anyway, got me intrigued and it was a nice video
