My dad loved hearing Gene Autry sing. Then my dad loved most all country singers. If my dad was still living he sure would enjoy listening to you sing. That song just brought back some great memories of my dad and his love of music. Thank you!

I enjoyed this song, Paul. I hadn't heard it in a while. Since listening to Old Timey Tuesdays, you have inspired me to get a turntable to play my albums on sooner rather than later. I have two milk crates with stored albums. It would be fun to hear Gene Autry, Sons of The Pioneers, Marty Robbins, Jimmie Rodgers, Lefty Frizzell, Carter Family, Johnny Cash, etc., on a turntable again. Thanks, Paul! Tell Granny I said "Howdy" from New York State. Bright Blessings.

Smiley Burnet’s character in the Gene Autry movie s was Frog Milhouse “frog” for the way he sang. Later. Milhouse was one of the engineers on the train in petticoat junction. At one time Autry bought Tweetsie and moved it to California and later sold it to come back to Boone as the tourist attraction

Good morning! That was a good one! Of course I always think of Rudolph when I hear the name Gene Autry! My Dad is 92 and he still watches Gene Autry cowboy movies! Have a great day!

Thanks, Becky. Seems like Gene was a great man in real life, not just on camera. I saw him say that he never wanted to sing Rudolph and had to be talked into it. Little did he know that it would be one of the biggest songs of his career and one of the biggest Christmas songs of all time. He said that the proceeds from that song helped him purchase the California Angels. :-)

Smiley Burnette had that break in his voice that reminded you of a 13 year old boy, only Smiley had control of it and made a living off it.

Yes, he did. Helped make his character! Lots of the old western stars had voices so distinctive, that you could recognize them just from their speech without even seeing them. :-)

Back in the '70s, I used to square dance to that. Our club's caller had a great voice. The problem with learning a song that way, though, is that I only know every 4th line or so, in between calls. 😄 I like country and western from the 1940s, especially the western part. I watched a lot of those singing cowboy serials as a kid.

I couldn't figure out why this song seemed so familiar to me, so I looked it up on KZbin and realized that I had heard it when my dad played his Hank Willuams records. Thanks for the memory! I'll have to give my dad a call and ask him if he has listened to Hank lately. 😊

Thanks for watching and commenting. I'll have to search for Hank singing it! I never knew he sang it, but Hank was very tight with Fred Rose (one of the authors of this song), so it wouldn't surprise me one bit. I bet Hank sang it really lonesome!

It pleases me no end, Paul, that you're covering this Gene Autry song. I've never been a fan of Gene's "acting" or his voice, so it is a genuine treat to hear it sung in your far more enjoyable voice. 👍👍

Thanks, Monica. Believe me, I was tempted to hop on a sled and fly down the hill. I've been taking PT for my knees for several weeks, and I was afraid that one slip might cause a setback and I would lose the progress I've made. Lord willing, I can join them next year. I definitely prefer warm weather, but I do like a little snow now and then. Can be beautiful, peaceful, and fun.

@BlindPigAndTheAcorn Mr. Paul, I'm listening to the Marty Robbins Gunfighter Ballads. I'm thinking of you doing Mr. Shorty....hint....hint!😉 Something kinda weird though, the original one that I've literally almost worn out has Mr. Shorty on it. I bought another CD, the same Gunfighter Ballads. The second one doesn't have Mr. Shorty on it. Since, I stream mostly now, it's not a big deal because I can listen to the original. I remember being upset when I got the second one without the Mr. Shorty. You could remake that whole album with your voice and style. You're one of the few people I've heard that has that ability. Since I'm taking up your time when you probably have a lot of things to do than listening to me ramble, I apologize. I've said mostly to my wife because she's about the only person I can hem up to listen to me that besides Elvis, I think maybe Darius Rucker is the only "commercial" artist that can cross seamlessly between all the genres of music. I mean Rock, Country, and Gospel. Btw, Rock to me is when you can understand what they're saying and it not being nasty and such. I really like Hank Jr and Waylon but I'm a little iffy on everything with them. I keep thinking maybe Chris Stapleton but I'm not quite sure. Sorry to take up your time. Please keep playing like you are. We all appreciate you so much.

Thanks, Peter. Sorry about that. I get so focused on making sure that I'm close enough to the mic that I sometimes let the neck of the guitar slip out of frame. The only chords in this song are D major, G major, and A major. The very first change is from D to G, then from G to A, then back to D. That same pattern of changes repeats over and over. Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any specific questions about where/when to change. :-)
