I find that also using toothpicks , to stir the paint around a bit ,in the pan , helps to push the paint into the corners and also push any tiny air bubbles out. It seems to be easier and also helps keep the necks of the watercolor tubes a bit cleaner .. One other fabulous tip I learned from a you tuber somewhere ( sorry I can’t remember who)... after filling the pans, clean the neck of the tube and use a q- tip to dab a tiny bit of Vaseline around the neck ... it has made my life a bit easier to do this with all my tubes of paint, watercolors and gouache , and the caps never get stuck anymore :-)) easy peasy as they say :-))

swirling it around using a toothpick or a small palette knife and also tapping the filled pan on a flat surface also helps fill in the gaps and flatten the top

Thank you for the video! Just a few notes... the reason some paints dry hard and/or crack is because they lack humectant. I use a combo of vegetable glycerin and (a small amount of) honey; I also add a little gum arabic. I add a drop to half pans and two drops to full pans. I use a toothpick or die pick to push the paint around in the pan (into corners). Tap pans when refilling to get it into holes and help remove bubbles (these may be popped with toothpick when at top). You may bake pans in an oven to help speed drying times (I usually Google the temp and time - check stove to be sure it is not running hot before doing this). I always clean the neck of the paint tubes otherwise the paint may make it difficult to get the top off later and/or may dry out the paint in the tube. Note: some palettes allow you to fit 7 in each row.

I squeeze Schmincke into my pans and it is perfect. It has one real advantage, it is workable very quickly with a drop of water. I have tried Winsor and Newton but it eventually just cracked and was not easily workable. Thank you for the useful information. Excellent video as usual Teoh. I cut a thin strip of old credit card and it worked very well for pushing the paint into the pan.

If you are using paints that tend to crack you can add in a few drops of vegetable glycerin to make it easier to rewet and not crack

I stopped putting MGraham in pans cause I couldn't get it to dry, eventually settled for a pallet with wells (like Holbein) and it is much better in there. I find some Daniel. smith colours very hard to rewet from pans.

If you would like colors to rewet more easily, just add a drop of humectant (vegetable glycerin or honey - be sure it's smooth, not crystalizing) to a half pan and mix with paint then let dry. This also helps prevent cracking and falling out of the pan. I sometimes also add a small amount of gum arabic (binder).

holbein works great in watercolor pans, they do shrink, but they dont crack.. winsor and newton also seems fine for watercolor pans even though they dont advice to do so since their tube paint are not design for constant rewetting, but so far, i dont see any problem rewetting my paint.

Actually, Grumbacher and W&N were the original brands I learnt with way back, some 30+ years ago, and I usually poured then in one of those common pallets with eight small wells, the kind of pallets without a cover. They were exposed to the air all the time, and they performed very well, especially the W&N.

As said by others, I use toothpicks to level and get out air bubbles. I have found that schminke's ultramarine very difficult to re-wet once fully dry. I mostly use M. Graham and they work great for me. They remain tacky but have no issues with them running or getting moldy. The cerulean blue does take a while to dry though.

ive had my white nights paints unused for a year and some had cracks but thank goodness i never experienced mold! when i used them again it exactly looked as it did when i first got it

Try stirring the paint in the pan with a plastic toothpick or some other plastic instrument that can be reused. Then dry it and fill the pan some more. Stirring should help even the paint out too I would imagine. Thanks for the advice. 👍 😁 I'll keep it in mind.

Great video! A short tip from me, filling pans half (like on one side and just two corners) helps with saving mixing space, trying out new colours and using honeybased paints from pans (no easy to make a mess, still shouldn't be stored horizontally for longer than a day or so (depending on the paint and pigment) ; I tried mijello mission gold and sennelier paints like this, which worked perfectly).

I bought a couple of tubes of Turner and White Nights. White nights took forever to dry and still remains sticky but shows less shrinkage than Turner. I also tried Maimeri Blue and they show the less shrinkage of the three.

I am thinking about putting all my colors in the pans. With little magnets place them in big flat metal can ( from chocolates etc....) And when I paint take out only colors I use. I started with mijello palettes, but of course “HAD” to have more colors than 18.... so now I have three palettes and counting.... and of course using couple colors from each when painting.... so when I do any project my palettes take whole table! the only drawback I see: am I going to destroy brushes using those pans? Can you comment on that? And btw Viridian from M Graham is really nice, not too runny good replacement for D. Smith. Most of my colors rewett nicely, even W&N, as one is not supposed to use tube paint to dry in palette. (According to their website) Sodalite from D Smith is foamy (!!!!) when rewetted tooo “aggressively” so I learnt to do that slower. Love that color for roads, felt, shadows etc so can deal with bubbles....

My favorite paint to use wet as well as in pans is Schmincke Horadam. They all work in pans really well. With the Daniel Smith, my second favorite brand (actually also due to this) it can be a hit or miss. A lot of their colors work really well but there are also a lot that shrink way to much and can detach after drying (no matter how well they were distributed into the edges it may simply happen later after heavy use). I often simply add water to them so the bottom gets wet and reattaches.... but it always takes time. I also like Sennelier and Mission gold and pour them into pans but mainly use them at home. I have some test pans from Mission gold as well and like with Sennelier their composition seems to differ from the tubes.

I agree. Schmincke is amazing to pour from, as their formula is the same for tubes and pans, and there are no issues with cracking. I also love Da Vinci for similar reasons. DS is my favorite to put in a studio palette. They're really easy to remove if you want to swap colors, but some colors do pop out a little too willingly if in a travel palette :)

Thanks for great video, Teoh. I filled my small lukas box with six colors from a QOR tube set, about 3 months ago and have been using them here and there. They are still pliant to the touch even when dry (not super hard). They re-wet well and give off lots of paint without needing to smash the brush down.

The brands I use for filling my pans are Daniel Smith, Schmincke Horadam, Winsor & Newton Professional, Daler-Rowney (which creates cracks when drying) and Mijello Mission Gold. All of them dry rather nicely, although Mission Gold DOES take longer to dry and I also noticed that it varies from color to color. Just to name one example: Shell Pink dried perfectly, whereas Melon Green took a lot longer and still feels softer to the touch, even though it's been almost a year since I filled the pan. It's probably due to the honey, as you've mentioned in your video. As for Viridian: I actually have that exact same one (Viridian from Daniel Smith) dried in a pan in my palette and have no trouble working it. I simply drop a bit of water on it and let it "activate" for a while, then it re-wets perfectly fine :) The only paint I sometimes have issues with is Lapis Lazuli from Daniel Smith, but I suppose it's because it has more binder and less pigment than other paints, since it's an expensive pigment (which is also why the tiniting strength is rather low).

I've had similar good results with my professional paints (Daniel Smith, M Graham, Winsor & Newton, Sennelier, Mission Gold) which never have cracking, and only minor problems with WN drying hard in pans (fixed with a drop of glycerin) and don't really have issues with DS Viridian & Lapis Lazuli--only a few earth colors and some handmade paints shrink a bit and get a little hard to rewet. And while at first, I had issues with M Graham paints making a leaky mess, after a few months most colors have hardened up enough (cerulean, nickel azo, cobalts) to go in travel palettes. I live in a very temperate climate however (Seattle) so that's probably the reason. I also do the Jane Blundell method of drying my pans on a slant when possible (one pour), maybe that helps get rid of air bubbles--and I usually stir with an untwisted paper clip (find it's easier to clean than a toothpick).

Schmincke is definitely the easiest and neatest to pour, but requires two pourings for a full pour. Sennelier and jacksons remain a bit sticky but do dry satisfactorily. DS will stay in the pan even if you just squirt a tiny amount, and they mostly do rewet. Isaro also dries well. I have a couple of kremer half pans and pans that have never dried, they were pouring out in the little bags they came in, but other box sets pans from them never misbehaved, so I think someone made a mistake with their binder! We don't seem to get a mould problem here, maybe the cold helps, we also do not usually get very runny non drying issues. A couple of exceptions are the quin purple i saw in your film from Jacksons. I have successfully dried Shinhan Pass though they are a little crumbly and I make sure never to let the tin turn upside down. Oddly a couple of their colours, which are a gouache/watercolour hybrid, also have a tendency to not dry, again a magenta and what I think is an indanthrone blue. Oh, White Nights always look very sticky but actually are no problem at all, if you have chosen your colours for permanence, mine are ready poured so it would be interesting to know if the formula for their tube paints is different. I know the hand made paint makers put runny paints in the freezer briefly and then they can be unwrapped easily. I really hate the uncertainty of paint straight from the tube and think pans and halfpans are the thing that keep me wanting to use watercolour. That and the delight of collecting more pigments.....

Most of Winsor & Newton tube paints can be poured into pans. The only one that gave me trouble (a lot of trouble) was an old Cadmium Orange tube. I thought tha it was set and dry but discovered (too late) that it wasn't spilling all over. How aggravating!

When I put paints into pans, I only put the paint in so that it will slope from the back to the front. This could also be from side to side. One of my favorite palettes doesn't even use separate pans. There are wells which are sloped. I put the paint in at the back of the well whenever possible. The area of Washington state where I live is very dry; so, I never have had to deal with mold in my paints.

I noticed with my cheap tube paints, when it dries about 1/2 the amount remains - shrinks by half. I don’t think the better brands have as much water though. I like the 3ml number some people use better, assumes you filled to the top then left a bit of a dome.

thank you for sharing this video! very informative :D for sennelier: sennelier yellow light, hooker's green, cinereous blue, indian yellow all dry well in pans but with a glossy finish as many would expect from sennelier. then their ultramarine deep, helios purple, and burnt sienna also all dry very well but have a matte finish, maybe a tinyyy bit of cracking along the surface but it's fine for me. then lastly, french vermilion... it was very liquid-y when i first put it in and it has dried and stuck to the pan nicely but it's glossy sticky, and although it's okay to cure in pans, but after painting, i usually need to leave it out to dry longer than the rest of the other sennelier colours. also, i'm not sure if you've tried Camel Camlin (kokuyo i think) artist watercolours. they're dirt cheap and i personally think they perform really well. they don't give pigment info i think but if you ever want to try new paints that are cheap, that's my suggestion. they're artist grade paints from india i believe. word of caution, they dry rock hard. i suggest adding two drops of honey per half pan. www.amazon.com/dp/B00LY1AUSG/?coliid=I1SJNNFJGAXUFP&colid=P4YC5VLXO5E2&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

I would just a pen knife to cut away the mold. Anything that has been infected by mold may be attacked again. There's no way to get rid of mold. The mold could also attack a colour beside but there's nothing to see because mold doesn't grow well on certain pigment/binder/stuff. When my pan gets attacked by mold, I cut away the infected parts, and in future I always leave the box open and well ventilated. As for 3 primary colours, you can try the classic selection Hansa Yellow Medium, French Ultramarine, Permanent Alizarin Crimson (Or Pyrrol Crimson). Teoh I am wondering if you, or anyone else, has any experience with filling pans with Maimeriblu colours? I've noticed a lot of my colour remain fairly tacky and glossy in for a long time, never really setting. Unsure if I should invest in some of their pre-made pans rather that risking with tube paints.

Maimeriblu probably used honey which absorbs moisture from the air. That's why it's never dry and look glossy. But these are not fluid paint. So one they are out of the tube, they will still dry and become hard. They won't flow out of pans when dried properly. They are safe to squeeze and use in pans.

I had some old Winsor & Newton tubes that turned to rock and I had to cut the pigment out of the tubes. I put chunks into pans, added some water mixed with a couple drops of glycerin (imagine honey will work similarly) and left overnight or maybe for a few days. The paint softened enough to stir and dried into easy to rewet pans. Only issue I had was with my last PY153 WN New Gamboge tube--the paint is stinky now, which I put up with because it's such a lovely color.

I filled 26 half pans in my palette. Hours later I thought everything was dry so I took it with me resting it on the side only to discover, an hour later that cadmium orange had escaped hahaha. Quick question for you though in regards to the Daniel Smith watercolors is there a way to be able to tell which colors may not work in half pans?

I have the Meeden 24 pan palette and there is nowhere near enough room in the middle to insert more pans, yet I've seen where people have done this with the 12=pan palettes. Is that a Meeden palette in this video?

I have the same palette and there's no room to insert more paint in the middle. I have a small pallet from Paul Rubens (12 metallic half pans) that allow me to insert 6 half pans in the middle though, along with 7 half pans in the default rows. I think it depends on the brand and how the boxes are built. 👍

Really depends on the metal box. Some have space enough to fit the pans horizontally, some can fit the pans vertically even in the middle row. But some can just out a small brush there.

If you don't mind a bit of vandalism of your tin the strips will lever off quite easily and you can glue them back in with a slightly bigger gap. I have done this with the 24 half pan set, the smaller 12 colour boxes I find are easier, and I do not bother to reglue them, I can usually fit 21 half pans in and they are a pretty tight fit. To make sure the ones in the middle row stay in well I use magnetic dots and they work really well. These tins will also take 12 WhiteNights full pans if you do this, I have three tins like this of their colours and it is a lot more convenient than a huge tin.

I have 58, 30ml pans. I know that when I open them they will have Gum Arabic on the top. I plan on mixing them really well and then putting then into smaller portions. When they are dry all the way, I have lids for them. Can you think of anything else that I can do? Thank you for your help. I love your videos. I hope that you are well.

You can use a toothpick or needle to mix the gum arabic with the pigment. Personally, I would squeeze out and remove the gum arabic. Doesn't seem to affect the paint consistency or quality.

Hey Teoh! I had a bunch of doubts, would love some clarity on this. 1) Is a pan 4ml == tube 4ml? 2) Why are pan colors + plastic/metal palettes so expensive compared to tube sets without palettes? For e.g, I find WNights 12 x 10ml tubes for 25$, but then 12 half pans of the same with that small plastic palette costing nearly the same? That's like 25-50ml of paint compared to 120ml. This doesn't make any sense. What am I missing here? Thanks. :)

Using a full pan seems to be a bit easier on the brushes, can pick up the paint from the body of the brush rather than mashing the tip into the smaller halfpan.

Something I can’t find anyone has covered on KZbin is which brand of watercolour pan lasts the longest. I just noticed today how QoR and Schmincke pans seem to disappear really fast whereas winsor and Newton ones have lasted me maybe twice as long. Would be hard to test accurately that’s probably why but. There are many videos covering how good certain brands are but not at what cost. Horadam aren’t any better than W&N in my opinion but perhaps any slight perception of quality is simply that more of the paint is coming off the pan at any time. Tubes are another matter and much harder to quantify than pre made pans.

There are a few factors that determine how long the pans/tube can last. If it's student quality, you may have to use more paint to achieve the intensity/vibrant colours. If the colour has low tinting strength, you have to use more paint to get intense colour. E.g. Phthalo and Quinacridone colours are high tinting and paint tube/pan will last for a long time. Compared to e.g. Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue Deep which will get used up quite fast even if it's artist grade. Even within WN, there are high and low tint colours. If you want really long lasting colours, go with colours that have chemical sounding names.

@@teohyc that’s a good point in general - my cobalt violet is the most used colour yet I hardly use it. Probably for the reasons you suggest. But with artist grade pans the schmincke all get used up far quicker than the W&N. Every colour. I’ve done a few swatches and not even a painting and they are down the same amount of paint as W&N that have been used for 5 years and done a good 30 paintings. It seems to me their formulation just gets used quicker but it doesn’t enhance the paint vs the W&N. So I wonder at the value of various artist brand pans when taking into account how long each lasts. QOR is vanishing fast too.

I had a problem with Sennelier's Caput Mortum, it is been 2 months since I pour it into the pans and the paint is not dry up to this day, It's not runny, but the paint is so sticky like melting chocolate..

I also have a few Sennelier colors including Caput Mortum it been 2 years and that pan has never dried, neither have the others. I think they will always remain sticky to the touch but they don't move around. I have taken my palette to many places, as long as the pans are secure you're okay. I also live in more arid climate people who live in places with a lot of humidity might have more problems.

As long as the paint doesn't run, it's okay. That's more important because it can mess up other colours.

When you are opening a new tube that you are concerned might rush out, Jane Blundell has a video saying to hold the tube near the bottom on the sides so you can squeeze it quickly to stop the paint. I had a couple of tubes do that & I just panicked lol, but I know this works if you have a bit of the paint above the rim that you want back inside the tube. I have heard someone recommends not filling pans completely, just about half way and on a slant to protect brush tips. I don't know if that would be worth the trouble though, have you had many brushes wear out? For the colors that do not stick well in the pans, I saw on 1 of your videos The Spin Doctor posted that they use a drop of gum arabic to glue it down. This seems to be working very well for me. I often use words that aren't the ones I meant to say, so maybe that was just a slip of the tongue....

If you fill the pans to the brim, just angle your brush rather than poke at the paint. That will prevent damage to the brush.

That's actually a great tip though. One of my palletes have sloping wells for paints. I guess that would be a great idea for filling half pans too, unless you really want to fill them up to the rim.

M Graham was my first paint as a beginner and was such a disaster I'll probably always steer clear. Very messy, but i wasn't ready for the deep end yet😂

I like your idea of first filling the corners. Have you tried tapping the pans to level and work out air bubbles? I want to move into filling pans or a segmented palette so these vids are really helpful. :-)

You can also use a toothpick to push the paint around. But I find filling the corners quite effective

Hi Teoh! Awesome video as usual. Could you make a video comparing Daniel Smith and Jackson's Art paint? I'm going to London in October and I want to buy some spare tubes. DS is way more expansive then Jackson's, so I don't know what brand to get. I know the paint you usually use is DS because it's great quality, but I'm prone to try Jackson's too because of the price. There's a rumour that Jackson's is made by Sennelier, do you think they compare in quality? I'm looking forward to your comment on that brand, thanks in advance. 😉👍

Jackson's Art paint is very fluid so they are best used at home. You can still squeeze them into pans, you just need to make sure to dry them thoroughly until they don't move. As for quality, they are good.

I'd probably get them running out of the pans inside my pallet after use. I'll stick with my original plan of getting Daniel Smith paint then. I find a lot of videos on how to fill a pan, but no video that shows how to get out the paint, when it s almost used up so you can add new paint in it, it would be heplfull to find one, or do youjust trow the pans away?

You can just use a pen knife to cut out the paint. Or just throw the empty pans away and buy new ones for new colours.

Probably not because acrylic dries to be permanent and you can't rewet it. That's why acrylic is not sold in pan form, always in tubes, cans, or containers.

You mean empty pans? They are pretty much similar. If you're looking for pans with paint, you can just go with the well known brands. It's best to get the brand where you can find tubes that you can buy easily to refill in the future.

Sennelier sells paint in pans, is there a disadvantage to just buying pans to begin with?

It's more expensive. This way you can refill the pan a few times 🤔

No. But Sennelier uses a different formula for pans and tubes, so some colors may differ. Tubes sometimes have to much (or separated) binder that make the use on pans more difficult. So buying pans may be a safer option, especially in humid climates.

Sennelier paint has honey so they are more fluid, and may not dry hard. So if you paint outdoors, and it's humid, it can be difficult to dry the colours and they may run out of the pans. The Sennelier pans however dry very easily.

That empty metal box? It's just a typical 12 half pan metal box. Many company would just stamp their brand on it to sell. You can find it easily on eBay (from China sellers) at good prices.

Is it normal for my watercolor paint to take more than a week? I filled my watercolour half pans a week ago with Daniel smith watercolour tubs and only the surface dried the middle is still wet

Several factors affect drying. The pigment, amount of binder, and the humidity at your place. Try to close the box, leave a gap, and put the paint under sunlight
