And this set will be still in print and on the shelves even in 2025. And WotC will reprint cards like Pact of Negation in MH3 and then in a Secret Lair until it is a 2$ card. And they will do that for a bunch of cards in this set. I learned with MH2 paying 540$CAD for a collector box was a bad idea. Would I want to sell the cards I opened to an LGS today that I doubt I would get over 100$ for them. And I would not be surprised that MH2 valuable cards be reprinted in MH3. Should sell those cards before they even tank more.

As a LoTR book fan, I think they actually handled the lore pretty well and I would like to collect these card (I have no idea what this is, some sort of collectors specials?) But I find the prices of anything WOTC puts out since 2010 completely ridiculous so I never buy anything in this special sets genre and am content with just doing a prerelease and picking up some normal cards. My disposable income since 2010 actually quadrupled if not more, but I just spend way less on magic than in the past. Maybe I am older, but i also want to pat myself on the back for being wise enough to not fall for marketing crap. edit: after watching the whole video, I would not pay more than 25% of the retail price for these packs and mostly for the non foil ordinary cards, all those weird gimmicky cards are of no interest to me

I researched it. 20 different poster cards, each has regular, foil, serialized. EBay has reg for $5--15, foil 20-35, serials lots more. Also 1 rings are 100/250/5k and still bidding.

Almost all Commander Borderless Foil Poster cards are sold out on Ebay. They don't need to go into the deck, you can keep it out in view for every match.

The cards are beautiful and well made for US production… and I like the silver foiling and the surge foil is ok but not great🤔👍🏼 value wise I got annihilated in each pack! 9 Booster and only one „Bowmaster“ , two „Pact of negation“ and one „New dawn“ otherwise nothing pricey and no good playable cards that I didn’t already have… so even I like the set and the new artwork but I got busted hard!🙈

If effectively this product does not do so well due to poor reception I wonder if it is for similar reasons than Double Feature. I see some similarities between this Special Edition and Double Feature. Both are a re-release of cards with only difference being different frames/art (i know in DF case the art was the same). And the products being released only about six months apart. It feels like to me an attempt by Wizard to milk the last drop. Those who went heavy on OG LOTR release may not have financially recover to want to go hard on this second release. Anyway, LOTR will be like MH2 to me... high artificial single card prices in the first months driving fomo to buy into very expensive sealed boxes. And then WotC keep the product in print during two years and putting so much of the cards on the market so the value decline a lot and only a handful of very sought after cards keep a bit of decent value. But in the end, everyone that buy into exepensive seald prices get screw, cause there is no guarantee by WotC that paying higher price for their product means you get more value in these products. LOTR will be the same thing. People pay 300$ for a collector box and in two years they would get maybe what 80$ from an LGS if they sell them the cards they opened in that box?

It looks like 3 different sets in 1. You open a pack and the cards are all over the place. Plus the secret lair cards. Having a serialized version of the same card is dumb. If you serialize a card you shouldn't be able to get the same exact card without it.

Why? We had textless rewards, invocations, poster cards. The art is recognizable and everyone uses gatherer or scy fall for card references anyways. Less confusing than game day omnath. They will play fine in the current flashy game state we have.

The scroll art is....omg it's horrible. It really is. I would MUCH rather have the original version of a card over the scroll verison. It's like they had some intern take the original art, slap some stock border on it and put some faded/burn filter on it. I don't care for the poster art but at least it's cool and unique - the scroll art has such a last minute, cobbled together vibe to it.

I saw a dude opening it at my lgs who ive played edh with a couple times. He pulled the "secret lair" (that's what im calling the art style that can be serialized. His was not.) one ring. Looked good. Also got the parchment looking bowmasters.

This is a sleeper set, with so many chasing serialized it's devaluing many cards in the short term. Long term this whole set is going to climb in value and popularity and settle as one of the top 5 sets in mtg.

@@MTGnEWbie420 there were TWO LOTR trading card games before this, from the 90s and the 00s... both can be collected for pennies on the dollar, there is barely a market in. both were decent games on their own that people played and collected. LoTR doesn;t make something automatically valuable. it just means that there will always be a niche market for it. Many other collectable card games from the 90s and 00s you can throw with the old paper in the recycling bin, but these lotr games have still a little value because of lotr.

There is a lot of hidden value in there. The surge foil Morgul Knife and Henneth Annun, those cards from the original release. Some of those can be $60 or more and some of the foil poster cards are expensive as well. Legolas Reflexes, Sylvan Tutor, Timber Protector

I'm sure that there will be some standout valuable cards in this set, especially (of course) the serialized stuff. However, pretty much anything Surge Foil or Silver foil is just in free fall price wise. Obviously this shit gets way overpriced prior to release and it has to correct, but at least for the moment almost everything you can pull here is dropping in value daily. I'm sure a very select few of the Surge Foil Realms and Relics will be okay, but they all appear to be falling off a cliff. They were supposed to be chase cards in the first edition, but now they're far more common in the main pack and at least reprinted, and only 5 months later.

WotC could have maintained sales of booster draft boxes. When they release new sets. Put certain alternative frame, foils, art work cards not in boxes for that set. Instead, they are only inserted into booster draft boxes. It may effect the outcomes of booster draft tournaments somewhat. However, the problems caused by the unexpected. This is made up for players joining tables to play draft.

Honest answer: I don't like it. To my eyes this looks like a symbol of inflation. "All that glitters"-the set. If everything is flashy nothing is. I think looking at this that the foil-multiplicator could invert at some point. If somebody would have sent me one of those time travelling back to 2017 I would have been exited. If somebody would have sent me the almost all foil box I would be disturbed. Maybe as a German I have a histoicly REALLY bad felling about inflationary situations but isn't anybody seeing the analogy? What's going to be almost as worse is the IP-mess looming on the horizon. LotR is a good IP, but I don't want MtG cards from it. And maybe I'm missing out on financial opportunities but my basic criteria has always been "Would you like it an your shelf?" and the answer is a clear "No". Do I want to see them playing against me "No". Now there is Doctor Who, Gozilla, Transformers, Walking Dead. I wander do people really want to see these IP's all in the same game? This reminds me of that Big Bang theory episode with the cowboy and the white wizard in the card game? I'm not cutting MtG as a whole but I definitely move more into everthingelse. Rudy is giving this a in my opinion pretty positive spin and I don't know if the risks are that managable. Maybe everyone should be reminded to definitely do "the big boy stuff" first and that there are other card games. I don't know why there are so many MtG videos with the Sorcery release ongoing? Has it been that much of a dumster fire?

Same - it's really cool, but it just feels a little shoehorned in and out of place. Unfortunately, the scroll concept is horrible, I think at least. It could have been cool, but the way they just put some sort of filter over the original art (which I feel actually diminishes the original art) makes it so lackluster to me. I also like the Brothers Hildebrandt art cards - I wish they had just done a bunch more of those instead of the scrolls.
