Yep, the only time I ever went to DC was the summer of ‘79. Mom, my brother and me drove from Texas. We spent 3 nights with her cousin and his family in Maryland. I was just old enough to drive and there was a gas shortage and it became my job to go sit in those atrocious lines to fillup. We spent a day in space and aeronautics museum and one in the Smithsonian. Saw Archie’s chair. 😆

This reminds me of the sitcom Frasier. Dr. Frasier Crane’s father Martin has to move into his son’s fancy condo. He has a 30 year old pea green striped recliner that has bits of duct tape on it. It’s an eyesore and Frasier has it removed. Martin tells his son that he wants the chair that he sat in during major events in his life- the 1969 moon landing, the U.S. hockey team winning the Olympics, and when he found out that he was a grandfather.

His chair was donated to a charity secondhand store which sells it to an artist who uses it in a display. When Archie approaches the artist, the artist offers him 500 dollars for the chair, the equivalent of a couple grand or so today. Archie turns it down. He wasn't willing to sell the memories of the all the times he held his daughter in that chair as well as all the memories of watching his daughter grow up from that chair.

Archie Meets The KKK is a good one too. It’s 2 episodes of Archie almost being tricked into joining the KKK, but when he realizes their true agenda, the payoff is awesome. There’s a “George meets the KKK” Jefferson’s episode too that is awesome. Norman Lear was never afraid to produce shows about serious, sensitive issues.

Dude, after you sift through a good lion's share of AITF episodes and clips, you need to see the episode where Archie loses Edith (she passes away). They do not show the death on-screen, it was an off-camera event between seasons 1 and 2 of the show after it became Archie Bunker's Place (the actress, Jean Stapleton, had grown tired of the character, saw no growth for her, and wanted to leave and pursue other projects). It's an emotional wringer, that episode. You gotta see the WHOLE episode, not just a clip, but if clips are all you can find, seek out the one where he "talks" to Edith while holding one of her slippers. It really shows how much he loved and depended on her. Casual observers might say he bullies her too much, berates her, picks on her, etc, but that's just how Archie vents his frustration, including calling her "Dingbat" all the time (there's a cute clip where Edith explains the nickname to Gloria) - Archie loved Edith to the core, and she him.

I watched this episode way back when I was a kid,and I didn't understand what the big deal was about a chair. Well, fast forward 40 some odd years and I now I understand the big deal about a chair. Some things in my life I just don't want anybody messing with. Every paycheck I've earned has gone to care for my family and try and meet the needs of the family I've bought very very few things for myself..1 is a La Z Boy recliner and my tools. Everything else I got was thrown out, given away, somebody broke and they slinked out of the house, and I don't have the money to replace it. Don't touch my rickety old, stained recliner and keep your dirty little rat claws out of my toolbox! Those are the only 2 things I've managed to hang onto for 4 decades...I understand Archie, and my Dad too when it comes to somebody messing with their prized possessions be it a junk chair or a corinthian leather high end chair..it's mine,it's the only things I own..don't own the house, the car,the kids clothes, cell phones, the wife's wardrobe none of it But the chair and tools? Don't touch them!
