When I was 11 in 1975, I distinctly recall owning "The Official Polish/Italian Jokebook". I know, I know. But the jokes were funny when you're a kid. You're right. It's weird to see someone who doesn't remember "Polack" jokes. The only thing now is that it's some other nationality. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

And where I grew up in the north, we heard it about all nationalities! We just laughed, didn't mean anything like it does now. I was for the Vietnam War, my brother was against it and mom said where do you all get these ideas?. But I remember her saying don't talk politics or religion as they were both in the war dad in the Navy, Mom worked for the veteran Administration.

Yea, the stereotype was people who were really stupid. The reality is Poles are as hard working a bunch as I've seen and as smart as anyone else. If you ever heard someone call a person a Pollock it's supposed to be an insult. I'd take it as a compliment. I'm not Polish officially but I believe it's very likely I am about 5 generations back as I had alot of relatives in Pomerania, one of which had a name that sounded Polish.

In the 70’s lots of people judged others who were from different ethnicities based on which country they came from. Polish people were viewed as very stupid. I take that look in Archie’s eyes as someone just handing him so many targets he didn’t know where to start. Like lobbing a pitch right over the plate. All four of my grandparents are from Ireland, so my father hated the British and thought Italians shouldn’t be trusted.

Mike and Archie played their characters so well. It was entertaining and lighthearted even though they were tackling serious social issues. Can't take that approach nowadays.
@beckygrant22582 жыл бұрын
This show made Americans look at ourselves, how we treated each other. Archie was an exaggerated version of many people in this country. Most folks were judgmental about certain ethnic groups, political issues, etc. Archie was judgmental about all of them…a WWII chest-thumper, like some of our dads were. Liberating Europe and Japan kind of went to their heads a bit, and so taking on Korea and Vietnam…sending their sons to do the “liberating,” well, it wasn’t the same thing, exactly. But they thought it was, in their own way. This show came about because families in America were arguing about these subjects every day in their homes. They called it a “generation gap,” the distance of thinking between the generations. Everyone yelling at each other, not really listening to each other very much. Norman Lear wrote the script as a comedy, so we would start listening more. It made us laugh at ourselves, I guess. And it had good results. We stopped using the N word and calling people ethnic slur names. Pollock jokes stopped being told. Women were taken more seriously. Lots of good came from this show. It spawned “the Jeffersons”….issues resulting from a black family moving up the social ladder, from Queens to Manhattan, with money. It spawned “Maude,” a show about an outspoken feminist, a character whom Archie had to deal with….and the show was about issues women deal with…we learned a lot through the comedy lens of Norman Lear’s scripts.

In the 60s and 70s, Polish jokes were rampant in this country, it was all good fun, and even Polish folk took it really well. Most people told these "Polish Jokes" in good humor, and that's all. Example "What is the national Bird of Poland"? "The mosquito." "How many poles does it take to to change a light bulb?" Seven...one to hold the light Bulb...and six to spin him around." Pretty harmless stuff. These Jokes were huge in the 70s, and then came "political correctness." I knew plenty of Polish people, and none of them felt offended. It wasn't a mean spirited thing. In fact you can just change "Polish" to "Irish," or any other ethnicity, and you were good to go. It was a joke where you just plugged in the desired nationality you wanted to insult. Today, you'd be called a racist. This was not that at all.
@marcusbetancourt37602 жыл бұрын
Back in the day, a long time ago certain words were used by the fathers when their sons and themselves did not see eye to eye, agree on certain things. Archie would call his son in law " Meathead" because that's what his father would call him when he would do something stupid. This was not a racial slur whatsoever because both the father and the son were of the same color, nationality or whatever. Just like if you were to watch another great comedy show, one of my other favorites called Sanford and Son, the father would always refer to his son as a "dummy". It was to try to get his son to thinking in his way of thinking and doing things.
@marcusbetancourt37602 жыл бұрын
The Jewish and non Jewish fathers and sons would also do this kind of derogatory way of discipline to see, think and do better. The Marines and many other branches of the service would demean the privates or buck privates in front of the other troops to embarrass them and so the "knucklehead" would act right and fly right.

I just want to take a sec for one of entertainments unsung heroes. Carroll O'Connor was a brilliant actor that was willing to take on the face of a "villian'. A guy we loved to hate, so that through his acting we could talk about some real problems in our society. I don't know of anyone who ever watch Archie Bunker, and could walk away without a strong opinion about something. He intentionally shoe-horned his character into a racist, selfish verbally abusive bigot so that America could begin to talk about just how wrong that was... it was brilliant. He didn't mind sacrificing his reputation and becoming that bad guy. The next time we saw him was as Chief Gillespie in "The Heat Of The Night", a show that began to address more problems, like racism, drugs, alcohol abuse, domestic violence, and child abuse... dirty subject matter that society would prefer that no one spoke of and swept it under the rug. Our nation is a better place because of this guys work... That's how I remember the great Carroll O'Cconner .

The term, "Dumb Polack" was coined by the Germans in world war II. The Germans had surrounded the capital city of Warsaw with tanks and armaments, and shelled the city to pieces. The Germans wanted the Polish to surrender, but they refused, and fought to the death with pitchforks, shovels, and anything that they could use as weapons. The Germans continued shelling the city, unmercifully, so much so that the Germans called them "Dumb Polacks" for not surrendering even to the overwhelming firepower and force.

Back in the day, a bunch of father's would call their son's all kind of crazy crazy to keep them in their place and to let them know who should be looking up to who. Archie Bunker's dad would call him a meat head when he was a little boy and would do something wrong too. If you were to look at a Show call "Sanford and Son, the acting father Fred would call his son a "dummy" even after his son was grown. I am not a Black guy or a White guy. I am a Mexican. My ole' man would always show me in his own way that he was the dominate one. Until one day, when I was grown up and sick and tired of talking all of his stuff and told him flat, that he just better not hit me anymore, that he realize that I was no longer a boy, but that I became a man. He didn't ever know that way deep down inside that he could have beaten the living he'll out of me and wouldn't sweat doing so. He knew that respect deserves respect and wasn't wondering how long it was going to take me to stand up for myself. Not only were we father and son but became very Super good friends, best friend's with each other until he died. God rest his soul.l will lo e him always. Adios.

I think after the world war there was a lot of dislike for certain countries Poland being one of them the French also because they didn't really take a side during the war. For the wars plural. So yeah there was that Poland other than dumb Pollock I hear that a lot and that's not nice. I think it had to do with the resource problems after Hitler and the power vacuum and all that partially at least. And as I said Archie was a safe way to explore these thoughts and feelings that people had in the day. It was also a way that some very smart devs had to point out that this is not okay. And safer easier ways to make people understand that some of the misconceptions that they have some of the ignorance they have it isn't a good thing. And it's smart it's a smart way of dealing with things Mary Tyler Moore also did that. As did Maude and Mash. It was a lot going on back then and there were such a difficult time and being able to cope with things and shows like this were able to address things without being volatile. I like Michael because Michael and George both help Archie grow as person and Gloria too they all help him like I said grow as a person. Michael understands that Archie is just ignorant he's not a bad person and he's a lot more patient with our cheese and a lot of people would have been and it set the tone of the other people around him too. I love that about that show.
