Correction. We claim our birthday as that of the Revenue Cutter Service, which dates back to August 4th, 1790. The RCS, Life Saving Service, the Light House Service, and others all combined to create the Coast Guard in 1915. You are, however, correct that we've been involved in every major armed conflict since our birth, in 1790. Revenue cutters fought in the War of 1812, the Harriet Lane fired the first naval shots of the Civil War, and also fought on both sides after being captured. There's a ton of Coast Guard history that extends beyond January 28th, 1915.

@@michaelmappin4425 It's really hard to say since it's extremely rare for a Coast Guard sailor to spend an entire career aboard a cutter. Typically, though, cutters are underway 6-9 months, back at their home port for 2 weeks to a month, then back at it. I only personally knew one person who ran cutters his entire career. He served for 11 years before he got medically discharged. In that time, he was underway 9 times.
@michaelmappin44257 ай бұрын
@scottkendrix6231 Navy carriers deploy in cycles. There are training cycles that increase in length until full deployment readiness. You might be out for a week, in for 2, out for 2, in for 3, out for a month, in for a few. The end of the training cycle will be 6 weeks to 2 months out, including a port visit to a place like Fort Lauderdale or Saint Martin. After that, about a month in port and then deployment for 6 to 9 months. After returning to home port, there will be a month long stand-down, and then the shipyards. Shipyards can last 4 months to 2 years. Then it starts over.

Everybody can say what they like about the Coast Guard, but there’s a reason Marines generally have a grounded respect for them. Medal of Honor recipient Douglas Munro, 1st Class Petty Officer, USCG, gave his life in the efforts he lead to save an entire battalion of marines trapped by Japanese forces at the battle of Point Cruz, Guadalcanal, WWII. This point in history shaped a special fondness between the two branches as where the Navy failed the Marines that day, the Coast Guard rose to the occasion, and it was remembered for many decades after, to which involved many occasions where Navy Sailors picked fights with Coasties for being “puddle pirates”, and the nearby Marines would take the side of the Coasties every time.

There were Marines I served with in the late '90s who left the Marine Corp and joined the Coast Guard because the CG had more of a chance of actually seeing real-world action (because of the "war on drugs") than the Marine Corps did at that time.....

I was in the CG in the late 90's. I called United States Coast Guard Patrol Station Venice home. That's Venice Louisiana rather than Venice, California. Right there on the Mississippi River delta where the river drains into the Gulf of Mexico. Major lane of narcotic trafficking, among other things, for Latin American cartels.

Coast guard is department of home land security before that department of transportation. Only time it’s in a department is in time of war which then it belongs to department of the Navy

This Sgt reminds me of the old saying, "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit".

And hopefully, the Company Commanders would teach the definitions of the words "THEN" and "THAN" as well as how to use those words, properly, in a sentence.

That's a very oversimplification, but yea... the Coat Guard is modern day pirate hunters and pirates themselves.

Technically the coast guard falls under the naval branch during times of war. Otherwise it falls under the department of homeland security

@@michaelhennegan9637Jacob is, in fact, correct. I served when it was DoT. After DHS was formed, it transferred to DHS.
