Legacy bands still headlining shows is a symptom of the death of the monoculture. The last time we all listened to the same stuff was when everyone still listened to the radio, so the bands that were big then are still the ones headlining shows. Rock/metal is more affected by this than other genres because everyone gets sucked into their own subgenre bubble and is oblivious to everything else. Remember - Spiritbox and Falling in Reverse both opened for Papa Roach on tour last year.

I think the true reason older bands don't hang it up is because of the lack of competition from modern rock and metal bands. You don't actually get a choice to headline massive tours if a young Metallica, Pantera, Iron Maiden etc knocks you out of the slot.
@RafitoOoO5 ай бұрын
@@CIRCLEOFTONEit's not there isn't competition, it's just that bands don't have the same reach anymore. Guys like Spiritbox, Bad Omens, Sleep Token got massive in the past few years and they still pale in comparison to bands like Metallica or Guns n' Roses. If they put on a concert, play an old hit or two, then a whole bunch of music they wrote last year, then obviously, they've still got something left in the tank.

Metallica’s latest album is a good one. Having said that, when a band just coasts on the old stuff (or the new stuff is recycled crap), I agree it’s time to hang it up. They are definitely the one legacy band that can still bring the house down. They somehow sound better as they've gotten older. They just show up in leather with a motor cycle and its still a great time. They don't even seem to be full of themselves like other legacy bands. *cough *cough Maiden * cough

100% of eerything i listen to I absolutely ADORE because it's 100% by CHOICE!! I've always avoided Spotify and all other alogrythms, because I implicity trust my judgement! I'm 45 and gave up even listening to the radio when I was 14!! The best music out there is music yuu will NEVER hear on the Bilboards OR internet playlists...have a mind of your own and go down that rabbit hole!! I did, and my musical life is that much better for it!!

I definitely think it would be a good idea to pave the way for new bands however, at the same time we can’t just blame everything on the legacy bands we have to understand that too many pathetic excuses for modern rock bands are refusing to try something new and I’m just sticking to that Cookie Monster vocal depressive bullshit that I’ve seen are good buddy Finn talk about it before. Takes two to tango. You said it yourself Finn. I do believe new bands could make it, but they have to try something else then talk about nothing but bad things. Or otherwise rehash the sound of the 70s. Originality and function over form is the key.

Aren't these legacy bands holding up the rock fest market?

Pantera- my favorite band growing up. Actually got drunk with Dimebag and Rex and they were such cool, salt of the Earth people it made me an even bigger fan. This tour they're doing now, "to honor the brothers", has completely ruined everything about that band for me. What a legacy tarnished.

If a band makes 15 albums, I will be impressed. The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Motorhead, Judas Priest, Kiss, Depeche Mode ,Saxon, Overkill, Duran Duran, Megadeth, The Beach Boys, Iron Maiden, Bad Religion, NOFX, and Black Sabbath are great examples.
@pensivepenguin30005 ай бұрын
But are they 15 great albums? I would say in almost every example you mentioned, the answer is definitely not. I love many of those bands, but only a portion of those total albums really represent their definitive work

RE: legacy bands - Finn says "can we move on" I agree a little, but Green Day Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chili Peppers are "1990's bands" who still put out cd's I will buy - in the 2020's. It's for me, like was said earlier about Blink 182 - how it's not their best music but "they're still doing it". Name me 1 or better yet, dozens of 'modern' rock bands as good as any of those four? You have to get looking at individual city's scenes and probably buy home-made or 'limited edition' pressings to buy modern band's music that possibly won't be as good I think the point is made well, referencing Iron Maiden and The Scorpions... like - if they've still got fans.... Like the "easycore is the pinnacle of music" point made. It's subjectively true, at least, I don't think there's the same level of objectivity coming back - we can even agree Taylor Swift has probably not got a lot of new music left, that represents anything comparable with where she has already been.

You're right Finn. Every legacy band should retire, along with every newer artist. Only MGK's music should continue to be played. MGK bless MGK, he invented the guitar, music, and the first supercomputer.

I think ICP showed artists they can do what they want AS artists and find a lane to success. They started a record label and put out their own music and gave other artists a ton of opportunities. So as like entrepreneurs and subculture flag bearers. People don't have to like the impact but you gotta respect it

There should be a mandatory cut-off age of how long a band plays before they ultimately get moved to a different kind of concert venue. Not necessarily the age of the band members themselves (you could be a fairly new band and have members spanning decades in age), but if the band themselves has been around for over 30 years, move them to cruise ships, resort festivals and legions. Or, i'll extend an olive branch: venues need to be required to drop the ticket price to under $50 if the band has been around $30 or older. A $300 ticket for a band past their prime is highway robbery.

Speaking to TOTO's guitarist it became painfully clear that in the 70s if you played guitar you got a record deal. I concluded this after I found out that they all knew each other. Steve knew Eddy before the 5150 era. They all either knew each other or had heard of one another before they cut a record deal.

Yeah they should. One of my fave bands ever, Deep Purple, is touring this summer. I was offered a free ticket; I turned it down. Because while they still release new material, their live act remains based on Machine Head & MIJ. I saw them do that material back then, and today they just aren’t as able to cut it. But here (money aside) is why these bands continue on: Christine McVie. The late great songwriter-singer-keyboardist of Fleetwood Mac. She chose to retire from the band at one point. Decided she’d had enough of touring. As the author of some of their greatest work, she had waaaay more than enough money to live out her days in style. Yet…. Within a few years, she called the band and asked if they’d like her to come back (they said “of course!”). Reason? She got BORED puttering around her garden. Realized that the touring musician was not only what she did, but was who she was. So she got back out on the road with the band, and did that til she physically could not anymore. That’s virtually all these people. It’s not just what they do. It’s who they are. And they get to pay for the grandkids’ college funds in the process.

I think a larger part of the legacy bands argument is the monoculture. Most bands don’t have the commercial peaks and ubiquity that bands of the past had and continue to hold on to

Legacy bands are fine. What's weird is that there's no new bands. I'd love to be that. I DM'd Finn before Patreon and he liked it! If you check it out and tell me it sucks, I'd appreciate it!

It's important to make the distinction, If you still record new music you are not a Legacy band IMO. If all you do is tour and live off your past, then yeah.

The problem is the fan base. It’s not the band. It’s not the promoters. It’s the fan base. Plain and simple! The fans do not have open mind to wanna go and listen to new bands that rock just as hard just may not have all the legacy and the gold albums and platinum albums and hit songs behind them. Doesn’t mean they’re not banded it just means that didn’t get the exposure or they didn’t sell their soul to the devil which nobody seem to talk about much more rock ‘n’ roll but I know it’s a thing. at the end of the day need to be more open minded because then Band will be able to scratch the Rich so to speak and be able to get noticed and heard and seen as much as the legacy band. It’s human culture and they’re not really open to new ideas and new things so the old stuff used to be years ago!! is that good or bad for me to decide, but it does eliminate newer music and artist being heard. Speaking of that go follow my band, striking on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok.

Maybe hot take: this is why legacy DJs are better than legacy bands, they evolve with the technology (usually) and like you said how common is it for a band to stay together for 20 years, a DJ is one person... Carl Cox been goin strong for close to 40 years now
