Excellent video. I still have both of my old school Lego trains I was given to as a kid. The standard motor had push in train and car wheels, but the other motor, which was also one block taller, had notches in the axle ends to lock it to the motor, and only came with train wheels with rubber traction tires on them. Both motors came with the same three C battery, forward-off-reverse blue control box. They had a front wire plug in, to turn the box into a tender or train car, and bottom metal contacts to mount the box directly to the motor. The standard motor had three sets of contacts, one on each "porch", and one on top, while the heavy duty motor had only two. (Top and porch.). Both sets came with an oval of plastic Lego rails which snapped to standard two by eight flat Lego "ties." The four straight rails and the outside curved rails were grooved, while the inside rails were smooth. After I got more Lego pieces, I made a two motor Heisler, a 2-4-4-2 Mallet, and a DD-1 Pennsylvania Railroad electric locomotive. The track is the same gauge as all Lego trains, with four studs between the rails. Just so you know, Lego trains have their own unique rail gauge and will not run on any commercially available metal model railroad track. Lego ought to adopt "L scale" as their moniker. Thanks for the memories and the video. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. ♡ T.E.N.

What i can see is that the Lego train sets from between 1975-1988 were the best and more natural . Also i had many of these loved the Railway Station at 11:25 . Also you can easily see how these sets were made with emotions and intelligence it all stopped in 2000's to today there's no more imagination . And what burdens me alot is the too much detailed minifigures faces instead to stay the classic smile face we all love . I even love how more mature the old Lego sets were back then showing us a real life random kid on the box . Some of these older sets were kinda 3 in 1 Creator . As for the price they were more cheaper than Lego today . You could easily buy 1 big set 2 medium sets and 3 small sets for less than 100€ . Since the 2000's it's nearly impossible since medium sets are kinda always at 70€ . I really wish that Lego could remade these older sets i'm pretty sure it would be an immediate succes since millions of nostalgic people would buy them and wear a happy smile on their face again 😊

The 9V era in the 90s (14:18-17:35) is the golden age of lego trains. Though the very early 2000s,with the western series is like... the aftermath of it,and still great. Late 12V in the 80s is the silver age. The lego trains since the 2000s are just... nostalgia remakes of the old days. Except rare sets like the hobby set, holiday train or Emerald night. And of corse the TGV (Horizon express) But thats like.... half a dozend sets over the last two decades... While before an entire decade was full of beauty and awesomness.

ICYWW kids.. those old school 4,5V trains carried batteries in the tender behind the engine, 3 big-ass C-sized batteries required to drive it, made the whole thing really heavy =D The tender car also has a microswitch in the bottom, so a stop flag (like @5:48) set in the tracks could trip the switch and make the train stop. Not bad for late 60's ;)

Where there were a couple prices in Pounds Sterling, I used a UK inflation calculator to derive modern Pound Sterling price, converted that to United States Dollars, and set #7725 would cost around £263.58, or US$336.19. For comparison, the Lego City Cargo Train (set #60198) costs US$229.99, which both has more pieces AND Bluetooth control. So whoever says Lego sets have gotten more expensive needs to run the numbers, because they've actually gotten a bit cheaper!

As someone who recently got back into LEGO, I'll admit, it's been a bit tough to amass the train collection I'm looking for. Want more of the old style steamers, and have been left with little choice other then buying old expensive ones. I have the newest Hogwarts Express which I love, and have it motorized, but some actual sets would be nice. Have the newest passenger train as well and the hidden side express which is a good one too if you leave off some of the hidden features. (they have some underrated sets). All and all just want a nice regular steam loco with no "featured style" on it (spooky disney winter etc). I'll even be happy with another western style one.
@rijkemans51145 жыл бұрын
In terms of looks and level of detail the 1980s trains can't really compete, but those are the ones that I hope to build a layout with some day. All the remote switches and signals make it just too awesome. Besides, most of them are based on real trains and you don't see that very often anymore. And then the monorails. Understandable that LEGO stopped with them since they only lost money on them, but they're so cool. I hope to pick up 6990 or 6399 one day. That, and a 1980s 12V layout have to be my biggest LEGO wishes.

Very nice video. Lego trains for me are so near and dear to my heart. I agree with others - the 1980s trains are Lego's best trains. I have two sets of 10132, one opened that I play with my grandchildren(they love it) and one still sealed and new in the box. I'm afraid to open the second one. Great set, lots of fun.

I had my first train ever - a LEGO one for X-mas 1966. I also had the big trucks too. Never seen them since then. Where are they left? I'd like to show them to my kids.

Hope you will find those trains for your kids Wilhelm, and that they also bring back childhood memories ;-P! Best regards from the Netherlands

I feel lucky to have a 723; I think it had been gathering dust in some forgotten backroom storage when they suddenly found it in the early 80s and it was actually on discount sale when I bought it!

I'll be likely to put it on again sometime soon as well. I had a lot of lego as a kid in the 80's but I never got a lego train. Sigh . . . lol
