This video is VERY different from what we usually do on this channel. Usually I do very civilized discussions with people. But I decided its been awhile since I had a good debate. I hope you guys enjoy the pure craziness of this discussion. Yes... we do yell a lot... but that’s kind of the fun part 🙃 so please leave respectful comments, everyone has different opinions, even if some of those opinions may seem extreme. That is what makes this fan base so great! We have so many different fans of so many different things within Sonic that makes it always interesting to discuss. Part 2 coming soon!

I am commenting this before hearing the rest of the argument, but I felt the need to go ahead and comment. The comment of Twip saying that most of the tracks, in Sonic Mania, use the same instruments, is not only objectively false, but also a weird basis as to why an OST wouldn’t be good. Most OSTs, albums, EPs, etc. use the same instruments within their respective projects. Now. If the VSTs and sound fonts, that Tee Lopes was using, sounded annoying or ear-grading, I could understand, but from what I hear, nothing in the OST was a detriment to the experience and no two songs sound the same, neither compositionally, or from a soundscape perspective. I get that music is pretty subjective, but I do not know where he’s coming from

hoshihearts omochaooo I’m in agreement that it’s all his opinion, but in a debate/discussion type of scenario, I would’ve liked to have heard more of Twips explanation. And I’m sorry but I’m not with you on the OST sounding “dull” or “unexciting”. I don’t even think comparing it to the Genesis OSTs is really “fair” in a sense. As much as I love the Genesis era OSTs, the Mania soundtrack is able to still retain that level of nuance and punch of the Genesis days, while also having the dynamic range and clarity of a Modern OST. Whenever I’m looking for an objective flaw in music, I always think of how it could be improved upon. And, in my opinion, I don’t think Tee Lopes could improve the OST because there’s nothing to improve from an objective sense. Of course, personal taste comes into play, and if you’re not a fan of what he did, then I can’t/won’t change your mind.

@@treynobles im not trying to change your mind either, but the megadrive used basic synth so it always gave a very direct sound, more harsh, and sometimes people prefer that. tee lopes used newer synths, effects, and reverbs giving his remakes a more open sound, but he chose not to make up for it by adding hard smashing drums, or harsh frequency sweeps for example. he even slowed down chemical plant in his version, which isnt "bad" but it reflects his philosophy, he likes to make his music a bit more laid-back then i prefer.

hoshihearts omochaooo I’m not sure if I agree that he makes every song in a low key fashion, because some of the best songs in Mania have an infectious groove to them. (Press Garden Act 2, Studiopolis Act 1, etc.) of course you have songs like Titanic Monarch, which are more low key but it’s made to be more suspenseful and there to add tension. Plus, the fact that the Genesis uses the same instruments throughout nearly every Sonic game, drives my point home as to why I think Twips’ explanation is kind of ridiculous.

It doesn’t make sense to hear it in Japanese, though. And the voice acting is by far the least problem anyway. It sounds worse than it actually is because of the stilted cinematography. Changing it to a language that you have no idea on how it’s actually spoken (and is arguably a gimmie to act at least decently in for most native speakers) wouldn’t improve much. At most, it’s a deafener.

Also, those of us who had problems with game direction in the old days didn’t really have a voice because the climate was all “zOMGZ VIDIOGAEMZ!!!!1” and any dissent was considered insanity and/or assault. Forced or surprise damage and puzzles that all but required game magazines were at worst considered part of the territory and at best *REAL CHALLENGE FOR REAL GAMERS(tm).* All video game franchises suffered from this to some degree. Sonic just had it the worst because speed and platforming are a legitimately tricky mesh that even Sonic Team was struggling to figure out, but the fanboys only saw a rad fast animal that would run over Mario like a freight train. Thank God for the Internet, where the viewpoints-and toxicity-can freely go both ways. Just like Congress.

@@CarbonRollerCaco How does it not make sense to play with JP audio? Why is it a bad idea to switch to a voice language you don't speak when there's English subtitles? If you don't mind the English voice acting, fine. But for those who want good voice acting, then it makes sense not to put up with the rough dubbing and just play with JP voices. While the mouth animations adds insult to injury with the English dub, it doesn't affect the JP voice acting's delivery much. People who watch a lot of foreign films and anime will be familiar with the Sub vs Dub. Of course these days it's not an excuse for Sonic games to have bad english dubbing, but back then I can give it a free pass considering the point in time the video game industry was at, and how they hadn't found their footing yet.

Because if anything, listening to them only helped SEGA drive the nail in the coffin of the blue hedgehog. And gave SEGA an excuse to blame anything but their shoddy, lazy, arrogant upper-management. Sonic turned into a meme, a souless caricature of itself when it started listening to THAT crowd. "But Sonic 06", what of the train wreck from 14 years ago? Why don't we discuss the games released this decade (2010 - 2020)? And now we've had a full decade of stagnation. The highest point of the 2010s for the Sonic series was literally 2 games that sold themselves on nostalgia for the past, when Sonic Team was allowed to have conviction. But even those 2 games aren't as phenomenal as the games they want to remind you of, they're just fun little trips down memory lane. But you are right in some way, people now had a platform to let their voice be heard...it's just you have influencers that are actually leading the trendy opinions.

Ronyplay I was talking in terms of Sonic itself, which despite its Japanese origins is HEAVILY American-flavored. The characters, locales and plot devices almost all have English names, and many of them are inspired by Americanic elements. Angel Island is even named for a real life island off the Californian coast. And I’m expected to believe that all of the characters’ native language is Japanese?! If anything, the Japanese original is a dub that only exists for marketability and the English dub is the true version, adaptation issues aside. It’s like Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star or Baccano!. Or, more relevant to video gaming, Virtue’s Last Reward and Zero Time Dilemma. (999 undeniably makes the most sense in Japanese, though.) And it’s not just the mouth movements that taint the acting; it’s the drawn-out pauses between lines that are in no way the actors’ fault as that’s just how the cutscenes are constructed. That shit applies regardless of language.

The classic Sonic games wouldn't've been nearly as fun to *replay* if they fixed all of the hazards that get you on the first playthrough. It is _because_ all of these "bullshit" pieces of level design that make it rewarding to master... though not always. Metropolis will always be cheap no matter how well you memorize it. I think Prem should have more faith in an SA1 remake. I trust that if given the right time and not being screamed at to put out some teaser when we don't know the behind the scenes, Sonic Team can deliver a solid remake. There's no reason to lose faith. Sonic has been through worse and made it. Thinking everything is gonna be like Forces just because Forces was bad in the way that it is, is a pretty bad way of looking at the future. Guess what I'm trying to say is be patient and have faith. Sonic Team can do this if you allow them to.

The thing that is worring is that Sonic Team lost 90% of it's talent after generations (Out sourced for Botw and other games) and the new sonic team is far from trustworthy. They willingly made a game with only 3 level designers, included Chaos and Shadow only for them to have minuscule roles, copied and pasted the same boss fight for two different characters *infinite and metal* and confindentally released a game with only one year of development *besides their time making the engine*

Sonic CD is the worst classic Sonic game tho. Sonic 3 + K is should also be judged as separate games too imo. It's not like combining them makes the full game as originally intended. The level order is different than originally intended, so it does feel more like 2 games mashed together than one smooth single experience.

Sonic 1, while definitely a game that could be improved upon, feels complete and well rounded. Sonic 2 on the other hand, while improving upon certain elements, always felt a but hollow and unpolished to me, which isn’t that surprising considering how much we found out got cut from the final game later on.

Just started watching these, I have to disagree about the Voice acting in SA 1, I get that there’s no natural flow in a conversation between characters and there wasn’t a whole lot of direction because the actors recorded separately and not ensemble, The Voice Acting itself wasn’t bad, it was how they handled the actors. I am Greek and I can assure you it makes much more sense to pronounce hydrocity as one word, as the word hydro is derived from the greek word ύδωρ. When it's used as the first link word then ύδωρ becomes υδρο- which is obviously where hydro came from, pronouncing it as two words is like invalidating the greek roots of the words.

On the topic of each classic game being easier with the next title, I believe that’s due to the advances in technology. Sonic 1 was super limited to what it could do and hadn’t found its footing yet so it made the game spike in difficulty since no one really knew how to handle Sonics level design. Sonic 2 was easier then the previous game because of the tighter controls and a better understanding of what sonic is, so figuring out the game wasn’t as hard as it was last time, however, sonic 2 still had technical limitations that made it difficult. Now onto sonic 3 &knuckles, this game was a lot easier then the previous two because of 1 single thing, save states. Sonic 1 and 2 were hard as hell because if you got a game over, you gotta go all the way back to the beginning regardless of how many emeralds you achieved. I don’t believe that the games got easier for better accessibility, with the exception of mania. I think it was just following the evolution for the standards of gaming. Mario and Kirby went through the same process in my opinion.
