I'd point out that Bran Mak Morn, Solomon Kane and others of Howard's sword and sorcery heroes are likewise in the same universe. So you can also have harpies and the Worms of the Earth and serpent people running around, too.

The Mortal Kombat mention reminded me, have you ever played Weaponlord? It's a SNES/Genesis fighting game that feels like it could take place in a swords and sorcery world like Conan. Korr plays like a Conan wannabe, Divada is a great "dark sorceress," and the other characters all feel like characters you could meet as NPCs in a Conan RPG.

That game came out at the wrong time, and the story was straight out of sword and sorcery. I can't remember all the characters names but I remember Kord (basically conan) and divada, mistress of death.

@@benhur933 I heard they made it with the intent that it be played online. So a lot of the lag or stiffness was supposed to be there as kind of a buffer for lag online. But the characters are awesome. And the fatalities are crazy - just kill with a combo and usually you'll get a kill and you can continue to shatter a skull or brains or cave in a chest after a decapitation or disemboweling your enemy. My brother I think hit our best fatality against me with Divada, but she's just great in the game anyway.

Regarding Acheronian cities its worth considering that given the empire lasted for an extended period its possible the city which was considered the very centre of the empire may have shifted over time as many real life empires have.

What sort of magics could do battle with the degenerate children of the Great Old Ones? Forgotten magics? Elemental stuff, metaphysics, or pacts with those same powers that generated our enemies?

Involving the shalebacks, imagine if the Cataclysms that lead to the modern world never happened they could have evolved to the point of human inteligence... REAL NINJA TURTLES! According to REH's essay on the Hyborian age Atlanteans devolved into apemen/apes then re-evolved into Cimmerians, while the Nordheimer evolved from snow apes driven beyond the Arctic Circle by the ancestors of the Hyborians... so it's possible.
