Woww, I have a lot of feelings about this one. First off, I feel this is dodie being vulnerable in a way we've never seen before, which is amazing, and really painful. Second, the filming is amazing, dodie in this soulless, echoey room, pacing back and forth like she's trapped. It really represents this feeling of being in your mid twenties and alone, and lost, and having what in your eyes is markable proof that you damage people. Also what she sees as the weight of responsibility, a little like in Burnt Out. Thirdly, dodie's really coming into her own instrumentally, and its great to see, she's really found her sound, and I can totally picture the end of this one turning into a classic dodie 'round'. Yep, this is amazin, can't wait for alsosim eee!

OOF THIS SONG... that feeling of growing up and looking back at past relationships (friendships, romantic, even family) and realizing all the crappy things that you did that you didn't even realize happened!!! And the guilt of if those people don't talk to you anymore, thinking/knowing that it was entirely your fault!!! And if they're still on good terms with you, it's that feeling of gratitude that they put up with you but also that even deeper guilt knowing how much you've hurt them!!! And the even worse paranoia that you might still be hurting them and they're not saying anything about it!!! And you're too afraid to ask because you're too afraid of the answer!!! And the feeling that you just want to shut off your emotions not because someone else is hurting you but because you are hurting yourself and others!!! It's the worst feeling! Especially if, like in your lyric "how they love me/all my daughters", you are told by people that you are amazing and kind and wonderful and you just know that you're NOT and it feels like you've got this little shriveled heart in your chest that no one else knows about and that you have to hide. I went through this very recently when I realized that I had (unconsciously) pushed away one of my best friends. I realized that I had not been there for her when she had needed it most and I got so wrapped up in my own life that I neglected to care about hers. That's the WORST feeling, especially if you're someone who has a reputation for being super kind. That feeling from "Someone hold me down, before / I book a flight to your front door/No one else will bring relief/...And I don’t want to grieve" where you just want to go and make everything better but you CAN'T because you can't forgive yourself for them. It's completely up to them and you have to be mature and accept whatever outcome. Man. Growing up sucks a lot of the time. HOWEVER! Not all hope is lost! My friend was gracious enough to forgive me and we are now back on great terms. I am still trying to forgive myself. It's natural to look back on your past self and just cringe and even get angry at how careless you were, but after ranting about this to my brother, he told me one very important thing: bad people don't worry if they're a bad person. Sure, you might not be perfect or flawless, but your guilt shows that you care and want to get better! The guilt will lead to one of two things: 1) it will help mend your relationship with someone you hurt after your sincere apologies and attempts to make it better, 2) or, if you don't reconnect with that person, then it will help you to know what you should and shouldn't do in any future relationships. Fantastic song, Dodie! I freaking love your music so much. I found you very very recently, and I feel like I've stumbled upon a diamond mine. Your music captures some of the most universal yet seldom-talked-about emotions. Love ya! 💕

I absolutely adore how dodie writes lyrics like “I’m on a train, I’m in a car, washing my hair, I’m in the dark” and “I wrote him a letter, I cried in the bath, I called my mother, and lay in the dark” cos they’re just SO REAL. Like these moments like sitting alone in the bath or on a journey or in the dark are the times that u feel so shit cos u actually have to sit and think and confront ur sadness instead of avoiding them by watching tv or something and shutting ur brain off and u need to drag your body around to do these necessary tasks when u just don’t want to. These are such real vulnerable things u do to try and soothe the aching of something like a breakup like writing a stupid letter you’ll never send or moaning to ur mum cos u just don’t know where else to put these feelings and u want someone to pick them up and lift them off u. dodie’s lyrics really just hit u because they are so simple and relatable and that makes it 10 times more emotional and personal to so many people. I adore her.

That second verse: "Heaving life into the dead, The book is closed, the words were said, everyone but me just knows how to let go" This verse gave me pause. I think many people find that relationships in their life will come and go with time, but some are ripped from us due to our own actions, inactions, opinions, or decisions. It's not always our fault (we all have lives to live), but sometimes the impact of losing a relationship is...really hard. Even if a friendship or relationship is unhealthy for us, sometimes it feels like it is easier to deal with the turmoil than to let it go. It would seem like the best decision is to let go of that tie, but it's not always that easy. I hope that everyone out there finds people who build you up, stand by your side, make you feel better when you're going through a hard time, and make you feel grateful to have them in your life! Much love to everyone out there, and to you too dodie! :)
