Ion Idriess in his seminal book on gold prospecting, notes many tin miners in Nth Qld using what they called a 'Banjo' which appears to be something quite similar, except its bigger and with some bag or matting to reduce the exit flow of tin.

that japanese gold pan sounded a lot like a "urethra".....erm kind of fits if its a really good spot I went with self expulsion as a kid.. You need to make your pan out of a blue plastic barrel. Be a color for seeing the gold and it would have the curvature you need.
