RDJ's portrayal of Tony has that perfect balance of legit emotional investment and a guy with a rock star attitude who's just enjoying the hell out of being a self-made superhero.
@brianng83503 жыл бұрын
If they ever went into Tony's drinking problem, Robert could totally relate and bring out the realism. But at that time, we was definitely a risky move. Glad everything worked out for his personal life and the movies.

The way he announces "I am Iron Man" at the end (becoming such a powerful callback line in Endgame) is great. He's just starting to smirk after he says it, he loves it. I genuinely don't think you could find someone more perfectly cast in this role than RDJ.

The rewatchability of this movie is nothing less than extraordinary. I've lost count of the number of times I've watched Iron Man. Favreau is a genius. He started the greatest franchise and superhero genre in the history of cinema. I just hope that Lucasfilm appreciates what a gold mine they have now that Favreau is doing Star Wars content. We sure as heck know what we have.

Iron Man was the first comic book movie I saw that improved on the source material. It is still one of my favorite movies, regardless of genre. I say this while recognizing some perhaps unavoidable flaws in the technology used and it's presentation. I was reading Iron Man stories before they graduated from Tales Of Suspense to their own title.

I know Paul Bettany only had a small voice role but he’s still in the MCU and is more important than ever
@Bad_Wolf_Media3 жыл бұрын
Bettany has been in the same number of MCU films as Robert Downey, Jr. Because JARVIS was there any time Tony was, until he became Vision and then he was still there in that role. Actually, with "WandaVision," Bettany has him beat now.
@latue873 жыл бұрын
That would have been a nice piece to mention.
@Lastclerk33 жыл бұрын
@@Bad_Wolf_Media you’re slightly off. JARVIS/Vision wasn’t in Endgame The Incredible Hulk or Spider-Man Homecoming. Counting minor cameros RDJ Chris Evans and Samuel L Jackson all have appearances in 10 MCU films ScarJo has 8 (not yet counting Black Widow) and Paul Has 8 with Jarvis and Vision combined. Stan Lee (obviously) has the most appearances
@Bad_Wolf_Media3 жыл бұрын
I was incorrect here. Bettany was not in "Endgame" in any form that I can remember. So with WandaVision (if you count it as one project), he's tied with Downey.

I really appreciate this. I have this argument with friends: there's no way in hell that at the creation and development stage they knew that the MCU would be a hit. Let alone Iron Man. The feeling is that most people were just amicable and just hoping for the best. No way they saw what was coming. This entire thing could have failed at any moment. The MCU is freaking amazing.

I remember being on a Road trip with 3 of my Air Force buddies in 2008. We drove from Arkansas, where we were stationed, to Myrtle Beach. We stopped in my hometown one of the nights, and it was pouring down rain, so my buddy bought Iron Man. Man, was I was hooked. Didn't know anything about marvel other than X-men, but what a journey it's been. What a great experience. Followed closely by 4 years later being stationed in South Korea and watching Avengers in a 4d theater in Seoul.

I think the thing that's so amazing about this is how little planning they did beforehand. It didn't feel like a studio trying to a launch 23 movies.

This is the film that included the ten rings, Agent Coulson and SHIELD, and Nick Fury in the post credits scene - they were literally trying to launch phase one
@arthand76723 жыл бұрын
@@IAteFire that's the thing though. Sure it had shield and in the end credits it had fury. But when you look at other films that try to launch universes... well compare it to like the mummy or BvS. Those movies completely stop to try and shove the extended universe down your throat. Here it seems almost completely relegated to the end credit scene. Not saying coulson and shield don't play a big role in the future, but he doesn't feel like he's planted to tease you about the avengers either. If it had been another studio, at least 2 other avengers would have been name dropped and we probably would have seen nick fury or one of the avengers in the actual movie.

The part right before the timestamp of "Why Iron Man works" is so extremely on point. I wholeheartedly agree with everything Dan said there - this IS a movie that really *should* NOT have worked, but it did. Excellent episode, absolutely loved it! As a comic book fan growing up, the release of each comic book movie has been so exciting, seeing these characters light up the big screen. For a lot of years though, I was disappointed when the hero was only in the costume for a minimal amount of time or was always taking off their mask. Iron Man was the first movie that I didn't care. I enjoyed all the performances and was engaged start to finish. It was great to have the full-on Iron Man scenes, but the Tony Stark scenes were just as good. So well done.

A friend of mine knew someone who was working in Fox TV's marketing department when Robert Downey, Jr was on "Ally McBeal." It was her job to go to his house and get him to the set. It was always a problem getting him to leave the house because he would finagle, negotiate and downright stall getting into the car. However, once he got to the set, he was a total professional, did what he was told and gave 100% in his performance. She actually was glad to see him reach superstardom with "Iron Man."

I still remember that time. Partly because it was right around my birthday on the 8th of May so I went to the movies with 2 different friend groups to see 2 different movies. I am what one would call a movie lover. Lover of all pop culture really. Mostly TV and film. That year I saw Iron Man 3 times in the cinema and The Dark Knight 5 times. That record would only be topped by Scott Pilgrim which I saw 7 times in the cinema. I made sure to see it once a week, every week, till it stopped playing. Good times. Anyway despite the fact I saw The Dark Knight a couple more times when one of my friends asked which movie I liked better I had to say Iron Man. Dark Knight was an incredible film but it was a very heavy film that left me feeling a bit sad when I walked out. Iron Man on the other hand was so much fun I knew that I'd end up watching and enjoying it more once it was available at home. Sure enough that turned out to be true. Partly because it launched the MCU but mainly it's just an almost perfect movie and super enjoyable from start to finish.

Let me share a comic book fan's perspective. After a couple of disappointing movies and especially Last Stand and Spider-Man 3 people in the comic book shop all thought that was it, the end of the comic book movies (for a few years to a decade at least). Iron Man was almost a joke (same for Thor and Captain America), he could barely keep his comic book at the stands, so no one believed this would be good, at best it could be hilariously bad. Sure, a couple of comic book arcs helped give some credibility to the character (Warren Elli's Extremis and Civil War), maybe because they knew they were developing Iron Man they tried to elevate his presence. In any case everyone was laughing at the idea till the first trailer, and the announcement that they were building to a cinematic universe. Later it became known that Ike Perlmuter showed action figures to kids and most chose Iron Man, that's one of the reasons he was chosen (those were the dark days of Feige not in complete control). The idea of a cinematic universe sounded rad but we tried to lower our expectations because it sounded pretty unbelievable we will see it. Then people started coming to the comic book shop after watching the movie saying it's great, we went with some friends and it really was. Still, no one believed that a Thor or Cap movie will be great, we all logically thought that this was a one hit wonder (personally I didn't like First Avenger but at that time I didn't care). Because I liked the concept of a cinematic universe and building to the avengers I wished that when the next movies flop, something I thought an inevitability, maybe they could incorporate their avengers plans to an Iron Man sequel. 13 years after that I still find it amazing what many people consider normal, to be able to watch dozens of good quality movies with the comic book characters I grew up. Even more so since I was aware of Marvel's financial troubles and it is so ironic that their bankruptcy is pretty much responsible for the MCU. The most important thing though is that this is a very good standalone movie that still holds up, something that few blockbuster movies can say
