After looking at all the new 2024 Kindles Amazon released, I decided to go for this Paperwhite signature edition because of the really nice metallic color backing and the feel of it in my hands. I went for the raspberry color. I like that you can see the color on the front edges of the device. I also like the automatic lighting adjustment and that it’s now faster with the higher contrast. It’s still portable enough to hold in my small hand even though the size appears to be slightly bigger than the 11th generation. I thought of the color Kindle briefly but decided to pass on it. The color e-reader screens are darker and not as bright as 300 ppi black/white screens. Thanks for the great review on this Kindle, good job.

Same, I just cancelled my preorder of the color one and just ordered this one in the jade color. Having color in the menus and lock screen would be nice but not worth it for me at this time.

I’m upgrading to a SE from the oasis 2 I bought back in 2017. I’m really interested in seeing how the auto brightness performs on the newest model. I have always turned it off on my oasis because it brightens under strong light and dims under low light. It turns the front light completely off in a dark room, which renders it unreadable. I hope the auto brightness on the newest model is more sensible.

Can anyone tell me what the software version is? The problem for me is that from the home screen there hasn’t been a way to remove an already read book. Which is crazy because I can do it from my iPad with the kindle app.

Are you noticing the screen of the 2024 being warmer than the 2021? I'm seeing multiple reddit posts and TikTok videos showing the new 2024 to be a lot warmer than the 2021 even with warmth set to 0.

Definitely, but the warmer look is better and more accurate. After using the 2024 the 2021 looks blue and artificial, while the 2024 looks like paper. The 2024 looks just as white to your eyes after you adjust

You only need a lot of storage if you have a lot of audio books. I prefer them on my phone. I have over 2000 books on my kinde and used around 3 GB. How many books does a person need at one time? I look at the front, not the back. I don't see ads while I'm reading. it's not worth an extra $40 for me to get the signature version.

32GB is an insane amount of storage. Yes people will use their phone for audiobooks. Why would they use a less convenient Kindle for that. And that Kindle is not great for comic books. Maybe ok for mangas. But still. 32GB is like tens of thousands of books which is far more than anyone will ever read in their lifetime.

@@readysetmoses Auto brightness rarely sets it to my preferred settings. A phone turns up the brightness when your in the sun. But the kindle doesn't need to do that.

I have the Signature edition and it is a bit slippery. I haven’t felt the « soft touch » material from the standard Paperwhite and previous ones but I know what it’s like. And this metallic finish is like not 100% hard plastic feeling but like 75% plastic feeling 25% soft touch. If that makes sense. But not fingerprints and I don’t believe it’ll get sticky overtime.

Looking forward to my new metallic Jade paperwhite. My 9th gen is showing its age and (lack of) speed. I do find it funny when everyone says that you'll only need to charge it once every 2 months or so. As an.. avid reader, that's being overly generous. I still have to charge mine weekly. But with my oasis, every 3rd day was getting a bit much.

Correct, regardless of which color, if you get the signature edition they’ll have the metallic finish. And yup I was referring to the older paperwhites having no metallic finish at all

I also have two Oasis models and I was hoping for a new edition with wireless charging, warm screen setting, light sensor, USB C charging, a faster processor, etc. However, I was not surprised that Amazon has decided to discontinue the Oasis because they have been upgrading the Paperwhites to include feathers that meet or exceed those of the Oasis at a lower price point. I will miss the page turn buttons and the full auto rotation when my Oasis models eventually die. (It is apparently quite difficult to replace an Oasis battery without cracking the screen due to the metal case and the strong glue that was used to attach the screen to the case.)

I'm still using the first Paperwhite, and that terrible, sticky, rubbery plastic back is one of the reasons that puts me off buying a new Paperwhite (never had that issue on the basic model). Having a metallic back would definitely solve that, but it's a shame it's only available on the pricier Signature Edition. If they could also make the text look sharper, that would be perfect.

You can get the same finish on the non-signature version with 16GB for a bit less.

The Kindle displays text at 300 PPI, the highest resolution at which books are printed. 300 DPI is considered the standard for professional-quality printing of physical books. Sometimes, though, books can be printed a bit lower than 300 DPI. Also, moving beyond 300 PPI is somewhat moot as the human eye can't resolve details above 300 PPI for those even with 20/20 vision. Text on the new Kindles appears razor sharp. They are a joy to look at. 🙂 Note: DPI = Dots per inch. PPI = Pixels per inch.

Not unless you're giving your 11th generation to someone as an upgrade. Side by side the 12th generation isn't a big enough change imo
