This is a Motormouth couple car review video of the all-new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser mi-size body-on-frame SUV. There is just one powertrain option for the new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser, the i-Force Max Hybrid, a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a 48-horsepower electric motor. It has an 8-speed automatic transmission and a combined 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, standard full-time 4x4 with a 2-speed transfer case. It can tow 6,000 pounds. As a comparison, the previous Land Cruiser had a 5.7L V8 with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is slightly smaller, its 4.4” narrower and 1.2” shorter than the previous 200 series model. Toyota says, this will make this new model nimbler on the trails. The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser will be offered in three trims, Land Cruiser 1958, Land Cruiser and First Edition. It will have 7 exterior colour choices, the two-tone Trail Dust and Heritage Blue exterior colours feature a grayscape roof. All models have 18” wheels, available 20” on the middle Land Cruiser trim. For the signature 2024 Toyota Land Cruiserlook, the 1958 model will feature the iconic round LED headlights, LED fog lights and Toyota Heritage Grille. The Land Cruiser middle trim has slim rectangular headlights reminiscent of the FJ62 and the First Edition model adds a roof rack, rock rails, round LED headlamps, tailgate light, a back door guard and mud flaps.
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser seats up to 5-passengers and features standard black cloth seats, available Softex and Leather. It has Toyota’s updated infotainment system which includes, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto and comes standard with an 8” touchscreen, available 12.3”. Other available features include, a moonroof, head-up display, digital rear-view mirror, 14-speaker JBL sound system, heated and ventilated front seats.
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 and will be limited to 5,000 units in the first two months of production, it will be built in Japan. You can expect pricing to be announced closer to the onsale date in the spring of 2024. However, Toyota US says, the Land Cruiser will have a starting MSRP in the mid $50,000 US range.

I like the round headlamps better, as they give the front end a more “classic” Land Cruiser vibe. But the rectangular headlamps are nice too. I especially love the classic TOYOTA lettering on the front grille and rear hatch, instead of the Toyota badge. This is a throwback to previous generations of the Land Cruiser. I can’t wait to see these start appearing on the road next spring. Great review!!

I think the changes make sense. A little smaller is likely what someone who likes these wants. The land yachts have limited appeal and can be cumbersome around town, let alone off road. The reduced tow rating likely doesn't matter much since most people who buy these don't tow. They are more likely to overland it, which this is likely decent at, especially with the slightly more compact dimensions. Add in the lower entry price and I think that broadens its appeal.

Designed and built more for function than ego. This looks great. If you need bigger get a sequoia. My dad had a green Land Cruiser back when I was a kid, I think it was from the 70s or 80s…because of that, I prefer the round headlights. That being said, I wouldn’t mind seeing one with the rectangular lights next to a Rolls Royce Cullinan (built for ego).

Its important to note the brand strategy. Toyota is marketing this model as The Land Cruiser for north American market while its actually land cruiser Prado not the big brother LC 300 that's why it has narrow body as Prado has always been the narrow body smaller engine variant. Toyota has offered LC & LC Prado for its LC platform since long and LC300 lineup has been known as the land cruiser while this smaller variant has always been marketed as Prado. However it shouldn't be compared to LC 300 as its not the right comparison. its just like lexus LX and Lexus GX, prado or this particular model is the stipdown GX and LC 300 is LX.

Given the space the battery takes up in the back floor, likely they decided not to have a third row seat. I believe the Sequoia had this weird third row setup so that may have influenced them to remove it on the hybrid.

I think Toyota just killed an icon. I’m certain it will be a great SUV… but Land Cruisers were better than just great. Especially with their amazingly robust past diesel power plants (and manual). Which one looks better? … I guess… the round ones. Just because it makes it look ‘somewhat’ different in a sea of these larger outdoors-ish ‘mid-sized’ SUVs. Even the latest updated Honda Pilot is going this route (save those round headlamps). Thanks for the update video. Cheers.

As for the headlights (round vs. rectangular,) let's see how the IIHS rates them. I don't understand why every new vehicle can't design headlights that are rated "Good." Are the engineers just not concerned how the headlights test at IIHS? The rating is a factor in whether the vehicle gets a "Top Safety Pick" or "Top Safety Pick Plus."

Exactly right, Toyota pulled a fast one there, sending us the Prado and calling it the Land Cruiser. The Prado is the "baby brother" of the Land Cruiser, hence the smaller size and the $20K+ lower price. Regardless, this is a MUCH better fit for the North American market and I think it'll be a big seller.

With all the off-road capable cars being flogged, one would think that the wilderness will be scarred with tire tracks everywhere. And yet, we are safe here. Most buyers of these monsters will simply be picking up on-line orders at their local Walmarts. Occasionally they will need to go over a curb or two and that's about it. As for horse powers. We keep pushing for higher and higher HP. Keep in mind a massive Internation Harvester tractor, the International Harvester 6788, puts out only 200hp. That's the farm monster that puts food onto shelves at your local Walmart. It's kinda odd then that you'd need a 350hp car just to drive from your house to said Walmart to pickup groceries.

I have a 1996 FJ80 Land Cruiser and a 2018 Tacoma Off Road truck...neither are daily drivers...I will likely have a hard time parting with my FJ but this is tempting. I like the round headlights and max out the trim. My vehicle is factory stock for the most part with very limited aftermarket parts. I like Toyota everything under my hood. I will be giving this a hard look. They are wise to suppress the pricing. The recent models have been too expensive.

For road trips I prefer the cargo space of the Grand Highlander/TX plus their gas mileage, smoothness, and 5k towing ability is plenty.

Oh shoot forgot you were coming to SLC!!! I would have lent you my ND2 for a day to take up into the mountains. I would have the perfect drive for you two to take into the mountains with some awesome stops.

the Land Cruiser is a GOAT! if you want to tow...get the TUNDRA, SEQUOA. For $55k ..i'm in for off-road. This should make the next. 4runner more affordable too.

I prefer the rectangular headlamps. And if I buy an rv, it will be an off-road capable model which the new Landcruiser should have plenty of towing capacity to tow it. Please tell Toyota that offering a panoramic roof would really make the new Landcruiser the ultimate off-road capable suv. Great video as always! Keep them coming!

Great review! I will likely buy one of these in Land Cruiser trim with rectangular headlights. A bit disappointed that it appears again that Toyota forces you to the top trim to get JBL, especially given they are only releasing about 5000 of them. I'm a bit of an audio nut, and that JBL is easily the best car stereo in the industry IMO. My wife's Audi A4 Allroad has Bang & Olufsen, and the JBL blows it away - especially at lower volume.

It's pretty sad auto manufacturers are force to couple smaller engines with batteries just to make it compete in power and towing with the outgoing model. V8 engines are going the way of the incandescent light bulb.
