To be clear, the new LC doesn’t offer 3rd row only in the US market due to the placement of the battery pack for the hybrid motor where the 3rd row would be. The rest of the world LC comes with 3rd row where diesel and other engine variants (non-hybrid) are available. I suspect when hybrid is offered on the GX, you’ll lose the 3rd row on Lux and Premium trim. Also, the LC for the US market doesn’t offer panoramic roof (only moonroof) whereas a panoramic is available for the rest of the world (no idea why as I type this). The GX pano roof is cool but doesn’t open.

I am top of the list with my local Toyota dealer, and I am getting a First Edition in the Heritage Blue. I prefer the Toyota over the Lexus because of the hybrid system (I heard that the GX will get terrible mileage), the retro look and color, and I do not need a third row. I have had a Lexus LX in the past and it was wonderful, but you feel a little ridiculous off-roading in my opinion. My wife has a new Sienna hybrid and we absolutely love that car! (Never thought I would love a minivan.) I just thought I would offer an alternate opinion. The GX should be fantastic but I choose the First Edition.

It is also difficult to drop and replace them when off-roading. Why can't they do what Jeep did with the new Grand Cherokee 4xe and place the spare inside while the batteries and regen gizmos are retro fitted around it. Also, that cover and bump for the towing hitch looks half baked and rushed.

I appreciate your nuts and bolts review. It was very thorough personally, I think they’re both great I’m gonna go with the GC 550 over trail plus because it’s more luxurious. I also have an engineering background if you have a choice between going with a 20 turbo V6 or a TwinTurbo before hybrid go with the TwinTurbo V6 you’re gonna get 349 hp and it’s the same engine that’s in the Toyota tundra and in the Lexus LX 600 The fact that the Lexus is the only one with the TwinTurbo V6, which mimics the VA makes me go with the Lexus GX 550. You might get slightly better gas with the hybrid Land-cruiser. I don’t want a turbo 4. We haven’t driven it but i prefer the twin turbo v6 Dara GX 550. Also has a 10 speed. Where is the land cruiser has a speedy won’t feel it every day but you’ll feel it when you’re shifting anyone and dry faster on the highway. David you forgot to mention the tire size in addition to the wheel size difference. The GX Overtrail has 33” tires from factory, compared to other GX trims and LC that come with smaller tires. Also, the e-KDSS has much longer wheel travel than previous model GX460 and than the current LC. So when someone compares prices, they would need to compare with the costs of installing a longer travel suspension and the mods to fit larger tires. I think the extra cost of the Lexus get swallowed up by the costs of the mods needed to get to the same level of performance offroad: longer travel suspension and larger tires. Also towing for the LC is 6000 lbs to the updated towing for the GX 550 of 9060 lbs so a 50% increase in towing capacity!!

Great review; no fluff or goofy "KZbin music". I've been a Land Cruiser enthusiast for a long time. 1st of all, why are we comparing a new "full size" LC to a Lexus GX? The LC counterpart in Lexus has always been the Lexus LX. And the Lexus GX counterpart in Toyota has been the Toyota Prado (which unfortunately has only been available in other countries) So the Lexus GX has always kinda stood alone so the traditional comparison has been "Toyota Land Cruiser vs Lexus LX". Sorry if this is confusing for any Land Cruiser newbies, but the enthusiasts will know what I'm talking about. So does that mean the Lexus LX: the Big version is going to be phased out? People who have been into Land Cruisers since the FJ 100 model arrived (and even before) , who have enjoyed the standard premium plush leather interior, with the capability of a true off-road vehicle, will not go for a Land Cruiser with a 4cyl engine and cheap cloth seats and sub-par interiors. Real LC enthusiasts will now be forced to look to the G Wagon, and, dare I say, Range Rovers. Sad day
@OldelCpt9 ай бұрын
You missed the memo. Outside US there is a LC and a LC Prado. The Lexus GX is based on the LC Prado. The LC is the LC 300 and the Prado is now the new LC 250 and was the LC 150(?). The LC in the US is not the LC 300, it is the LC Prado called the Land Cruiser only in the US. They dropped the Prado name in the US and the LC 300 is not being sold in the US. Thus, that’s why IN THE US, the new returning to the US LC which is in fact a LC Prado is being compared to the Lexus GX and not the LC 300, which does not exist in the US.

Just wandering, why is it necessary to use premium fuel with the new GX? Plus, yesterday I heard Jerry Reynolds, The Car Pro Guy on AM radio say that he did a comprehensive study a few years and his research determined that all vehicles will run just fine without causing any fuel injector issues using regular low octane gasoline. So, I am a little conflicted as to what to believe. I would appreciate if you can clear that up for me. Thank you as always for producing and sharing your excellent videos.

It has to do with compression ratios. Lexus engines are tuned to 91 octane for higher performance. To be clear, higher performance is achieved not by what fuel is used but by how the fuel is used. 91 octane has a high compression ratio which allows the engine to use more fuel to achieve more power (i.e. pack more fuel into the piston to make a bigger boom = higher power/performance). Sure you can run a lower octane every now and then but you'll eventually damage the engine. Lower octane fuel ignites at a lower pressure meaning ignition happens faster and with less power. In an engine tuned for 91 you'll get engine knock. So when you put premium into an engine that requires 87 you just waste gas. But most modern cars should be smart enough to adapt the timing and many can use 91 for better performance.

I’m actually here to make the same comment. Thank you. I’m curious as well. Why premium fuel ?
@c.k.5480 Жыл бұрын
The older a vehicle is, like a 20 year old LX470 that recommends premium fuel would benefit much more than an owner of a 4 year new lease. As in, the older it gets, the more it makes sense so those items are well kept. I have 325,000km and 2 timing belt changes and use premium fuel (Costco) all the time! I like it, it’s also better for the environment so take that climate activists.

Hello Mr. Chao. I understand that the new Toyota model does not have anymore the "KDSS". Is there any improvement in suspension? Thanks for your answer.

I think the GX looks better but I've always dreamed of owning something that says Land Cruiser on it. In your professional opinion, do you think the new Land Cruiser will STILL be a notch above all others in terms of the quality of the parts themselves? As the CarCareNut has explained, there are many shared parts, Between the landcruiser 200 the Lexus model, however, there is a clear and obvious difference in the quality of the shared parts... That's one of the biggest reasons that the land cruiser lasts so long and you can even feel the difference between the 2. The Land Cruiser just feels so much more solid in general.
@benjamintran5444 Жыл бұрын
The part quality for land cruiser 2024 will not be the same level as the old ones due to the price cut. I bet they use similar parts as in any other Toyotas.
@nicholassinovich4257 Жыл бұрын
@benjamintran5444 I really hope that's not the case but it certainly makes sense. Especially considering another big factor on how the can drop the price is there trying to go "cross platform" so many of the new parts such as the chassis for example will be universal. Many other parts as well I imagine so either the shared parts will all be super stout or all of them not so much as they used to be

A real Indepth review... I will definitely be leaning towards the GX even though I prefer the TX 550h+ plug-in 7 seater

David, excellent analysis...I do whole heartily agree with you as a Toyota/Lexus owner for over 40 years. My current 4Runner has KDSS and I wished the LC250 would have it. But in the end, both are excellent vehicles. Note: I have heard the LC250 will put out max torque at 1,700 RPM. If true, then I would think you will not have to push it hard to get up to a normal speed.

Your 4runner has KDSS which term of 4runner that you have?

The version on the 4Runner TRD Off Road. This is the only 4Runner model trim that has it.

The three questions I have about the Land Cruiser are that no reviews that I have seen have addressed are: 1. With the location of the battery in the rear of the vehicle, without much under body shielding, will water fording create a vulnerability? 2. Why doesnt the LC come with a TRD off road option? 3. What is the projected mpg of the LC?
@shootandcruise11 ай бұрын
To answer #2, probably because Land Cruiser has never used the TRD tiering system. To answer #3 27mpg which I think instantly makes the LC the better vehicle especially since the GX gets 17 with required premium fuel. The GX is going to start off much more expensive and cost much more to drive throughout its lifetime.

Thank you for you opinion! I also like new LC probably with a circle headlight. But I adore GX more! BTW what kind of a seat cover do you use? That looks so nice. Can you give more info about them or link where to buy pls?

I assume the Lexus will also have better sound deadening materials and therefore be a bit quieter and more refined? The ability to option the GX with the Luxury+ package is also appealing because of the adaptive dampers, Mark Levinson sound system etc., What seals the deal for me is the availability of the beautiful Nori Green Pearl paint and Lexus service. Very few buyers are big off-roaders. For those few then maybe they get the Land Cruiser with off-road package.
@BsurfChillin Жыл бұрын
I was also thinking about sound, would LC have the higher end laminated side glass for sound deadening like luxury level? I'd think GX will but have not seen description with that yet.
@OldelCpt9 ай бұрын
The GX 550 Overtrail is a more offroad capable out of the box than the LC with the e-KDSS, which is not available on the LC, moreover bigger 33” tires from the factory. So your comment is off. Remember that the GX 550 is based on the LC! So the only minor differences are the angles.

Thanks for the thorough comparison. I did not consider the Lexus until watching your review. (I already have a 2006 Land Cruiser but plan to keep it.)

Excellent review Dave……I have the LC300 GR SPORTS and it’s a solid car all round. I drove the LX600 on which it’s based on and still think the LC offers better value for money and is more practical. Hopefully in the nearest future we will be able to compare all variants - LC 300, LX600, LC PRADO and GX550……interesting times ahead. Keep up the good work.
