This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the all-new Toyota Pius versus the Updated Toyota Corolla Hybrid. The Toyota Prius sure looks great for 2023 with its sporty and sleek exterior design and offers more power than the Toyota Corolla hybrid. It has a 2L 4-cylinder, the Corolla a 1.8L 4-cylinder, both matched to an ECVT. The Prius has a combined 196 horsepower for AWD and 194 horsepower for FWD models. The Corolla Hybrid a combined 138 horsepower. The Toyota Corolla offers 5.3” of ground clearance, the Toyota Prius up to 6”, both have a tire repair kit. The Prius and Corolla come standard with an 8” touchscreen with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, the Prius an available 12.3” touchscreen. Both have a standard 7” digital driver display in Canada, in the US, standard 4.2”, available 7”. If you are looking for an inexpensive hybrid, the Toyota Corolla is the winner. The base trim Corolla Hybrid AWD model is $9,499 CAD/$4,650 USD less than the Prius AWD base model. Top trim to top trim, the Prius is an extra $9,039 CAD/$9,265 USD. Keep in the mind the top trim XLE model in the US is a FWD model. If you choose the SE Infrared AWD model which has less features but a sportier look, the difference is an extra $8,690 USD for the Prius.
The Toyota Prius is more fuel efficient, the AWD model gets 4.8L/100 km, 49 MPG city and 4.7L/100 km, 50 MPG highway. The Corolla hybrid AWD model 5.0L/100 km, 47 MPG city and 5.7L/100 km, 41 MPG highway.
Here’s a breakdown of the pricing for the Prius. There are new regulations in place for the Canadian market, all pricing now includes, freight and delivery, dealer fees and levies. In the US, it’s MSRP. In Canada, the Prius starts at $39,864, Limited $46,204. In the US, LE FWD $27,450, AWD $28,850, XLE FWD $30,895, AWD $32,295, Limited FWD $34,465, AWD $35,865. In Canada, the Corolla Hybrid starts at $28,865, LE AWD $30,365, SE AWD $32,765, XSE AWD $37,165. In the US, LE FWD $22,800, AWD $24,200, SE FWD, $25,240, AWD $26,640, SE Infrared FWD $25,775, AWD $27,175, XLE FWD $26,600.

My 2011 Prius has been an absolute workhorse for the family in my business. She’s gone over 250,000 miles with very little maintenance. Only now has the mileage started to decrease a little, but I still get about 45 miles per gallon on regular basis. The leather seats still look good although they are a getting a little frayed around the edges from constant heavy use, but overall it’s built like a tank. It’s about time for me to upgrade, and I think the new Prius looks lovely with its sleek sexy lines, but my only worry is the poor rear visibility. This has been my biggest gripe with the Prius, and I finally installed a video enhanced rearview mirror. The only other problem is the low aerodynamic nose which constantly gets hooked on curbs when I pull into a parking space. The flimsy plastic aero shell underneath has to be constantly reattached with the zip ties 😅. I’ve been thinking about the new RAV4 plug-in hybrid. I know the mileage isn’t quite as much as the Prius, but I would like a little higher ground clearance, and better rear visibility …. but I’m worried about availability. My poor little workhorse might have to last a few more years after getting put on a long waitlist 😂

I've owned a Corolla, a Camry and currently have a '14 Prius. I like the Prius for the ability to haul things easier, and the size just feels right to me. I ordered a 2023 Prius XLE AWD mainly because of the new design and features, along with the idea that I will buy my first NEW car, vs a lease return. Toyota is reliable in that all I've ever had to do with the Prius is a brake job. The Camry needed a timing belt, but that was all and it lasted 25 years. The Corolla looks interesting, but like I said, the size of the Prius feels more comfortable for me. Unfortunately there's a long waiting list for delivery in Minnesota. Currently my 2014 Prius is still worth almost as much in trade in value as I paid for it eight years ago, which shows the overall value of Toyota.

Just bought my Toyota Corolla XLE FWD (16 inch wheels) hybrid today for $28,000. It’s the price point, and the gas savings for me. It’s like I’ll be saving in gas more a year for what it will naturally depreciate for. Didn’t care for the “sportier” SE or XSE… although it looks cooler, it’s only like 140hp… not a sports car. Why try to look like one? I’m loving it so far!! I really love the tech/safety features for the price point as well. It was cheaper and easier to get than a Prius where I live. I just can’t see spending $10k more for the same flavor of car just because this one looks pretty. Although the new Prius design is pretty. I’m just trying to get from a to b and buy a house one day and not have too much debt when I do. My husband owns a 2020 4Runner, so we have some variety on what we drive. Only thing I wish I could’ve gotten was the AWD but it is surprisingly never ordered where I live and I was at the mercy of picking the cars that people had ordered months ago and decided they no longer wanted.

After 10 years with the Toyota Prius C, I wanted more power and ground clearance. I've waited quite awhile for a Rav4 Hybrid but everything was indicating the wait was going to be well over a year and possibly closer to two. I opened my search to gasoline only again. The Subaru Crosstrek hit everything I wanted. It is closer in size to my 2002 Rav4 and the price was amazing in comparison to Toyota. I am one month in and the AWD is so much fun in Minnesota. The Toyota hybrids are great but kind of a waste to discuss if Toyota can't speed up the supply. Thank you for reviews on the SUVs and allowing me to break away from 30 years of Toyota. I couldn’t justify the price jump to Lexus. The features I wanted moved me to Subaru.

I bought a 2024 Corolla SE Hybrid almost 2 months ago and I’ve been really enjoying it. I think it is very true that the Prius has moved up in the market and is priced at a higher level than it used to be. I tried to get a Prius LE but couldn’t find one that was available, and the XLE, Limited, and Prime were all much too expensive for me, so I ended up going for the SE Corolla Hybrid. I have been very impressed by how well the Corolla drives, the MPG it’s getting (I’m averaging 48 MPG) and the great looks of it too. I was also able to get a moon roof, wireless charger, and blind spot monitoring on my Corolla and it was still much more affordable than the XLE Prius. The new Prius is looking great, but it seems that the Corolla is filling the spot that the Prius used to fill before it became a more luxurious vehicle.

I didn't understand why my Corolla LE AWD was rated at higher MPG than what was claimed for the base model. I think it's the package that includes the 16 Alloy wheels. The difference in wheels makes a 3-4 mpg difference? I've been told that I can get 15" Alloy wheels that will fit on my car (and NOT upset the speedometer) to increase the MPG a bit more. I'll think about that down the road when my present tires wear out. I do think that the LE ALE with convenience package is the best option for me. I don't need the moon roof, and while the heated power seats are nice to have, the standard seats are quite comfortable as is, and the manual seats are a set once and forget about it as I'm the only person who will be driving this car (I'll have to reset the seats each time I bring the car into the shop for maintenance, but that's not a problem). Don't need the wireless phone charger as my phone lacks that feature. The larger screen on the dash would be nice, but not worth the price. Only real thing I'll miss between the Corolla and Prius is the larger 'trunk' space, but I need that so little of the time (some trips to Costco). Still, can overflow into the back seat. And the MPG difference between the two cars would take SOOO long to capture the difference in price. If you compare actual out the door price, the Prius is actually between $6000-11,000 more than the Corolla. Finally, if you have a way to charge an EV at home, then the new Prius Prime is worth looking at, though it will cost a few thousand MORE than the standard Prius.

I think the 15" wheels on the Corolla are the key to it's feeling of power in the uphill test. The smaller the wheel the quicker the acceleration, bigger the wheel the harder it is to get moving. Surprising how many vehicles, especially electric ones, that are coming onto the market with 19" and 20" wheels as they are performance killers WRT acceleration and range/economy because of their mass.

I was looking at the corolla because my current corolla is getting a bit high in miles, yet as I looked the base model LE here in Phoenix is being advertised at 29k no where near 23k that Toyota claims it should start. Even if you consider destination and no “extras” you should see them around 25k so not sure were they are claiming the extra 4k price difference. The best “unicorn” I could find was one at just about 26k and it didn’t seem like the dealer actually had it. My biggest annoyance searching for a new car is all the “in transit” cars that they don’t have but also some how “just sold” at the same time. It’s about this time I would say go shop for a used one but the most “reasonable” one was a 2021 being sold at 29k with almost 60k miles so not worth it either.

I've been a Toyota driver my whole life: first car I got in high school was the Corolla. Then I had a Camry SE. Now I've been driving a Prius 2010 for 13 years. It's going strong with 120,000 miles...but I am thinking about trade in now. Good review/comparison of the two cars. I've always equated the Corolla as being more popular because of its value. I'm in the SE US, and the 2023 Prius Prime is peaking my interest: even more power in hybrid, and good electric range for my city driving in Atlanta. Before seeing the 2023 Prius, I was considering maybe going with an electric car (because the previous generation Prius was so ugly). Right now it does seem as though availability is an issue. I can't test drive any 2023 Prius right now (they're being bought in advance). I've found a dealership that's going to contact me when there are Prius Prime allotments. I can budget for any trim: the XSE Premium has some features I'd like. But I have doubts that it's a trim that will make it to the SE region (right now I see a SE and XSE available in a couple weeks). But I can wait and see if there's more supply in the coming months.

And the average mpg is roughly 33mpg if you drive normally, but 28-30mpg range if you are in a hurry. I also use 22 rav4 hybrid se as a daily, and the build quality is nonexistent. Every single plastic trims and pieces rattle and shake, and the dealer refuses to fix it. The average mpg for the rav4 is 26-28mpg if I drive comfortably, around 33-34mpg for being conscious. I can push 38+mpg if I don’t care about other people. The lowest average I got was below 20mpg, I believe it was like 18.8mpg at flat out. And yes it’s a hybrid. Toyota hybrids get ok mpg at low speeds especially during traffic hours, but if you drive 85+mph the numbers drop significantly compared to gas only models.

The Prius got pricey this current generation. I went to the Chicago Auto Show a couple weeks ago and i was surprised how big the trunk is on the Corolla. I would consider a Corolla for me since it fits my style and personal life. My only bad thing i would not consider the Prius is that size of the tires. You can't find tires that are specified for the new Prius. They're too thin in width with 19" or even 17".

I think the real problem with the Prius is that it is now relying on good looks and improved driving dynamics but worse cargo practicality to capture a new consumer marketshare. Prius buyers are inherently practical people and when you take away all the practical that was such a big part of previous gens, you're basically making them think twice about buying a Prius over a similarly priced Camry Hybrid for example!

It would be interesting to know what the resale value of the new Prius would be in 5 to 10 years vs the resale value of the Corolla (at the same trim levels) in the same period... maybe the savings would not be that great if the Prius returned a much higher resale to the sales price.

thanks so much for that little update and correction! I couldn't see how that would be true, that the Corolla hybrid only has a measly 105 hp????!!! if we're talking about one of the best economy cars in its class if not the one who wrote the book! I had a 1996 Corolla? I know not the trim level but I was only the 2nd owner and drove it until it threw a cylinder 16 years later! Her name was Bessie and we loved her a lot! My kids grew up in that car and we had so much fun during that time in that very dependable very reliable car! Currently, I'm trying to raise my credit score to get out of my 2016 Honda Civic which has also served my family well, except for the maintenance schedule that pops up repeatedly and too soon too close to the last HUGE CHUNK of change it cleaned out of my bank acct from the last big dollar maintenance ordeal! I'm going back to a Toyota and a hybrid at that to be on the safe side of not having to go to the pump every frickin' day to fill up at over $25 for a HALF tank of gas in a 2016 HONDA CIVIC! Jeez infrastructure a little mercy please I drive Uber to survive and lately, that's not even doing it and I'm out in that car at least 6 to 8 hours a day trying! So that is my reasons for needing to get back into a Toyota Corolla and this time a Hybrid Le AWD I believe would be in order! Although If anyone feels the need to gift me with a Prius LE with the best mpg, then by all means I'm grateful for whatever flows my way and eases my daily pain of having to give grocery money over at the pump!

Traded in my 21 Hybrid Rolla for a 24 Prius Prime. I absolutely love the way it looks and man does that 2.0 litter engine feel snappy. It's more expensive but the Corolla Hybrid just feels so lack luster inside - of course this is switching from the base LE model of the Rolla to the XSE Prius Prime. Good Review, thanks. My wife and I really like the Prius but disappointed by lack of head room. While the height of folks increases, the headroom in many small cars gets smaller. Our family has always had Camrys and the same holds true for that model. Our first 2005 model had the most headroom and the newer models have less now. Our shortest family member is 6'-0" foot and THEY notice it. Our kids are all in sports and their taller friends (and parents) all have the same complaints about their Toyotas. Lack of head and leg room. If your tall and sitting in the front, you have to recline a bit to get comfortable, but then anyone sitting in the back-seat gets crunched. We're calling you out TOYOTA . . . please add 2 inches to both headroom, legroom, and really; the same thing for the back seat. That's why more folks are looking at SUV's. We have one, and never take our Camry anywhere if there will be more than 2 people going along.

I drive a 2009 prius coming from a 2004 prius. The new prius takes away the best functionality of the previous gens. Nice headroom back and front, step in/out to chair position seating rather than crouch to a lounge position and need to climb back out, a gigantic rear space with the tall hatch and lowered back seat, a gear shifter that takes up a few inches of dash space conveniently just a few inches from your hand on the steering wheel rather than a stupid shifter (which it isn't) sticking out of the most valuable space in the car (you know, before the brands caved to the car reviewer "influencers/car enthusiasts" (how many buyers, especially of this type, are car enthusiasts?) that seem to think that everyone NEEDS to have their hand on an antiquated shifter so they can feel more like a race car driver. (I can picture the engineers' face palms when told by the marketing department that the influencers told them to bring back the ridiculous "shifter" (which isn't)!)). Living in Canada I would love a tiny electric motor on my rear wheels though rather than the tiny light weight motor over the front wheels struggling to drag the heavyish large rear area and battery through the snow and ice. In the gen2 with no way to turn off the aggressive traction control it is actually a safety hazard. I guess the more expensive Rav4 with lower fuel efficiency will have to do for my next vehicle.

I m tired of all the SUVs. I am happy that there are car companies willing to break the mold and make sedans. I like both the Prius and the Corolla hybrid. I do not live where four wheel drive is needed, so two wheeled drive is fine with me. There is a lot of hype right now about the Prius - who would have ever thought! I live in mid-America and I doubt we will ever see a Prius until later in 2023. Many dealers here are marking up vehicles way above MSRP to try to recover loses of the past two years. Many folks in the US are car crazy and are willing to pay the inflated prices. So I will just hold off a while and maybe by 2024 things will calm down and then I will make my decision about which one I will choose. By the way I enjoy your vehicle reviews. But I will tell you what I tell every reviewer: remember in your reviews it is the vehicle that is important, not the reviewer. So maybe more air time to looking at the vehicle and less looking at the reviewer!

Because Toyota is hybridizing their entire lineup, the Prius as the "hybrid brand ambassador" becomes redundant. So instead the Prius is being repositioned as its own thing. Toyota is selling the new Prius to those who specifically want the new Prius. For those who want a Toyota, there's everything else in their lineup.
