One of the reasons why Waylon Jennings was haunted by this for years was because he commented, as a joke, said, "Well, I hope your ol' plane crashes" as a response to Buddy's joke, "Well, I hope your ol' bus freezes up", since their tour bus kept breaking down and was basically a hunk of junk.

The Everly Brothers and the Crickets toured together several times, and since Don and Phil didn't have a regular touring band, the Crickets did backup for them many times, both before and after Buddy's untimely death. One other aspect of Buddy's tragedy is that the band's first producer Norman Petty was real controlling--and real shady--with the money, and after Buddy's late 1958 falling-out with both Petty AND the rest of the band, Petty refused to release the royalties and concert receipts he owed to Buddy. Without income and very recently married, Buddy had to take the Winter Dance Party tour so he could support his growing family. So those five deaths-- Holly, Valens, Richardson, pilot Roger Peterson, and the baby Maria Elena lost-- are ALL on Petty.

This doesn't cover everyone. Left out was David Box, who also died in a small plane crash in 1964. David recorded 'Don'tcha Know' and 'Peggy Sue got married' with Jerry Ivan Allison and Joe B. Ernie Hall lived across the street from J.I. He played on and co-wrote 'Don'tcha Know'. He died around 4 years ago. Larry Welborn played Bass on some of the earlier recordings. Larry is still alive and so are J.I and Sonny. I've met many of the Crickets over the years, including the back-up singers. The only one I never got to meet was Joe B.

@@garyvandecar2580 I take your point, Gary, although you shouldn’t really introduce a qualification in retrospect. My reply was predicated on the KZbin clip - which is essentially about the Crickets, not just Buddy Holly’s Crickets - and which perhaps should have been sub-titled ‘When is a Cricket not a Cricket’? I think the inclusion of Tommy Allsup - great guitarist though he was - is rather spurious. In my view, he was more of a session musician than a bona-fide member of the group, despite being on the fateful tour together with Waylon Jennings and Carl Bunch. And as someone else has pointed out, where is the reference to David Box? To my mind, ‘Don’t Cha Know’ was the best post-Holly vocal performance of all the Crickets’ recordings. Of those still living, I should have mentioned Glen D Hardin. I saw him, together with Sonny Curtis and Jerry Naylor, in Birmingham on 5 November 1962, during the Crickets’ UK tour. Jerry Allison and Joe Mauldin couldn’t make it. I was fascinated by the instrument Glen played - the innovative Fender Rhodes bass piano.

If it was not for Norman Petty, the Crickets and Buddy Holly would have probably never split up. Buddy Holly knew the future lied in New York and Petty convinced the Crickets to remain in the Lubbock area and Clovis, New Mexico where Petty had his recording studio. Petty then tied up the royalty money made off of their earlier music due to the fact that he convinced them to add his name to the song writing credits even though he contributed nothing. This caused Buddy Holly to go on the winter tour because the courts was in the process of hearing the dispute over the royalties and Buddy had just recently married and they were expecting their first child. The original Crickets were ready to rejoin Holly just prior to his death. Their music and Buddy's musical talents especially in song writing and producing influence so many future artists for decades. One of the greatest bands in music history.
