Question: In cases where you need to elevate the other claw for the damaged claw to heal -- does the block you put on the opposite claw eventually cause arthritis or any form of muscle tension to the cow, since the whole limb will be elevated for a certain amount of time?

Pastured cows walk through mud and manure the same as housed cows. DD is much better controlled with sunny and dry weather but its not always nice weather out in the pasture. Especially at gateways it can get muddy and thats where the DD will spread.

In the wild, wolves, lions and others predators 'solve' hoof problems. Thats why you dont see these issues in 'natural' settings 😂
@childofcascadia3 ай бұрын
Also, non domesticated hoofed animals have been selected by nature to have tough hooves. If a hoofed animal has weak enough or hoof shape to get rocks in there, the predators you mentioned get a meal. And that animal doesnt reproduce. Domestic hoofed animals have been selected for by humans for other traits such as muscle mass or milk production. And if after a few millennia, if that weakens hooves or changes hoof shape -oh well.
@BennyKleykens3 ай бұрын
Also, you don't see cows in the wild ;-)
@Cec9e133 ай бұрын
It's also a matter of hooves shedding naturally as wild animals move back and forth from wet areas to dry areas, and it causes a natural shedding process. If the hooves are more consistently dry or wet, they don't shed the same.
@AngelaPickles19293 ай бұрын
Hadn’t realized that wolves and lions have hooves. Maybe deer, horses, and elk would have been a better choice. And all animals in the wild that have hooves have hoof problems, just not as much.
@kiwigirlNZ3 ай бұрын
@@AngelaPickles1929The OP made the referral to wolves, and lions because they solve the problems by killing and eating weaker/injured animals.

From an employer’s point of view, is it reasonable to request/expect an employee to work in close proximity to excrement/biohazardous material? Please excuse ignorance re this matter but I thought the question was interesting and haven’t found a conclusive answer yet.
