A big one is this: "I'm gonna sign my kid up for soccer, football, basketball, ballet, tap, piano lessons, guitar lessons, violin lessons, gymnastics, tae kwon do, swimming, horseback riding, French lessons, singing lessons, math tudoring, and so on. My kid will learn three languages with Duolingo before they're 8. I'll teach them how to talk at 6 weeks old, use a toilet at 3 months old, read at 2 years old, ride their bike at 3 years old, do algebra at 6 years old, and drive at 10 years old. They'll skip two grades and take all college credit classes while in high school so they can graduate college early. They will be so good at so many things and be very advanced! I don't know why more parents don't do these things. I guess they're just too easy on their kid!" 🤡 I'm exaggerating, but a lot of future parents overestimate how much time, money, and energy they and their child will have for all thess extra curricular activities and don't have a realistic grasp on how much a child can do without getting burnt out or how inconvenient and expensive it is to take so many kids to different activities. They wonder why most parents either don't do extracurricular activities at all or only do one or two, and they think their children will somehow be losers when they grow up without them.

Because I knew that no matter what I expected, my expectations were going to be wrong One thing caught me by surprise, though - I never thought that most of the time, when I was telling my kids what to do, it would not be as the wise elder helping the child grow in their understanding of the world, it would be as a human being who doesn't appreciate being treated that way For example, no decent halfway intelligent adult would ever see me cleaning down on all fours and think that it's time to climb on my back
