Thak the ape-man gave Conan the best direct fight of his entire career (if you only count REH's stories, which I do). I mean, that was one of Conan's first solo adventures, but still impressive.

Been waiting for this one. My personal HC when it comes to the various Ape Men is that through Hanuman's blessing, the humans of the setting are becoming more like the earliest humans of the setting--What we'd consider the last common ancestors of humans before the split from our other primate cousins. It would make sense that, through generations of devolution, the ape-men adapt to conditions more like the earliest humans. My Other HC centers around Varnae and the Gigantopithecus/Pictish Bull Apes. I like to think in the world of Conan, there's two subspecies of Giganto. One of them has human level intelligent like Varnae, but others, similar to the Ape-Men of the setting have devolved in intelligence and are more bestial.

I like this head canon this makes sense to me, based on what we see. I always found it interesting that Varney was an ape. I'm not sure if it was intentional, but I think it's the first time vampirism was tied directly into the evolutionary history of mankind, like it's an emergent--albeit mostly supernaturally driven--property of the evolution of apes. Howard may have very well established the trope of the millennia old ancient vampire that we see mirrored in so many vampire stories now adays, from The Originals to Blade.

Aren't there ape men north of hyborea and Conan and his clan fought and banished the survivors further north and then a hundred years later they come back as super Aryans ???
@smuggrog98212 жыл бұрын
The northern ape men are supposed to be the ancestors of the Nordheimer but that doesn't necessarily mean all the ape men of the north evolved into humans though. Its possible that one group of ape men simply went further north, remaining in thier bestial state due to thier harsher environment and not coming into conflict with the more advanced Hyborians like the other ape men did. Thier is also the supernatural influences to take into account to and its likely that Hanuman could have had a hand in stunting thier evolution.

Devolution did happen in past how is it fictional?? For example Ardipithecus ramidus "should be the common ancestor we share with chimps" was bipedal and had reduce canin teets yet late some of his "offspring" would returne to apes (devolved to monkee) and some would turn to human.
@JonathanGhost42 Жыл бұрын
The problem with the concept of devolution is the inherent idea, that a change in a species that is seen from our perspektive as bad (like losing intelligence or bipedalism) cannot be called evolution like any other adaptation. But seeing things from a more objective perspective, then there is nothing like devolution per se, but only evolution. We are speaking here about a fantasy setting, so there is no need to make everything scientific, but when we use real cases in our real world as example like the one you mentioned, then we can say that it was for the ancestors of a species that "devolved" certain traits rather better for survival to lose this traits instead to keep them or specialice more in this traits - and this would be one of the core principles of evolution. (Sorry for my horrible english, but i am german and rather read or hear english than speak or write it myself. Hopefully my point came still across...)
@richardides2035 Жыл бұрын
@@JonathanGhost42 If there is time in history when environment create process by which something is made worse not better then is it really evolution?
@JonathanGhost42 Жыл бұрын
@@richardides2035 But what is "worse"? From our human perspective it would be worse if our descendants would lose intelligence because of some changing enviromental factor, but from the point of nature it would be not worse (and neither better), but just another adaptation and from the basis of the concept around evolution everything that helps or does not hinder the survival of a species is fine as long as the creatures survive and mate. And something is only objectively a worse change from a darwinistic point of view, if the changes hinder the creatures in their primary objective of survivig and mating. Evolution in itself is just the change of life over time and the proces of adaptation, but if it would be a bad or good change from the point of view of the species is irrelevant as long as the genetic line survives.
