This saddens me so. It is scientific, objective fact that the D12 is the greatest of all dice designs and completely underutilized in most, if not all, rpg systems. History shows 12 is the perfect number: 12 months 12 hours 12 zodiac signs (western and Chinese) 12 Face Cards in a deck 12 codoms in a box The list goes on Not to mention the heft, the feel, and the beauty of its exquisite shape! **chef’s kiss** How dare you sir?! This video is an act of war! My fellow DODECAHEDRONS and I shall rise against you and strike you down faster than you can roll an 8 on that “precious” double pyramid of yours. Beware! Our fury will be swift! DODECAHEDRONS ASSEMBLE!!!!!

If you need more proof that anything is better than the number 12, just take a look at music… Music you say? Well surely music relies on 8 notes and the Octave! But it doesn’t. How many semitones are in an Octave? Go on, how many? It’s 12. If there weren’t 12 tones, there would be no Tenor trombone in B flat. No tenor trombone in B flat, the modem orchestra wouldn’t work, no swing and jazz music! No Glenn Miller!!! How many pop songs would be as good with only 8 notes? And the lack of Keys that would exist with only 8 semitones. We wouldn’t have the beautiful chord progression of G, Em, Am, D on the guitar with only 8 semi tones! Then, when you consider the mathematics of the number 12, it becomes even more impressive. Twelve is the smallest abundant number, since it is the smallest integer for which the sum of its proper divisors (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 6 = 16) is greater than itself. It also has a perfect number of divisors, and the sun of its divisors make a perfect number. A die that exists to celebrate the mighty number 12 will always be the mightiest of dice. #DodecahedronsAssemble

A good praise starts with a good crushing of the enemies, so let us begin. D4...be honest, the only thing you're REALLY stabbing is yourself. It's a caltrop you say? FOR YOU. It's the dice of daggers you say? Well we all know rogues secretly hate how little their dagger drops do so much so that they borrow from the D6 for sneak attack. Ya basic. D6...it's a box - literally people shave down the corners because boxes are not supposed to roll. D8...you only like this because of the weapons it represents. It's like a leaning tower of actual pizza pieces. You wish you did more damage but you can't. D10...your highest number is represented by a zero...and you look like you fell over. D100...you need another dice to make your score and that dice uses a zero for a ten and you use two zeroes for a zero. And 5e banished you besides the overly involved DM. D20...it's been said. You're a ball. And all but the D6 so far speak a secret truth - you are just he biggest of the triangle holders. You're just a ball of triangles, made up of the soulds of the smaller triangle holding dice. Why is the biggest and most used dice just another set of triangles. Where is the variety? D12...if you don't like the D12 you either hate round things or you're jealouse of its power. Watch new players when you ask them to roll the dice, they grab the D12. It's not overly round like the D20 but it actually rolls. We instinctively grab what is great and are trained out of it by our pesky DMs. I don't want to be rolling a 20, which is just a 10 trying to be twice as cool. I want to roll a 12, if it's double anything it's double the classic D6. All other dice have 3 edges to each face besides the D6 which has 4...and what has the most edge for the edge lords you ask? D12 has 5. D12 should be everything - you have a crit fail, a crit hit and 10 other choices - it contains all the numbers you need in life. Game makers have been jealous of its powers for centuries and so they burried its power in only a few weapons, weapons which boast the most power. Wait...2d6 weapons boast more power you say? Precisely - game makers let people roll twice just to try and fabricate a covert victory over a superior dice. All those who claim the 2d6 as their favoured damage simply don't comprehend that they could be rolling 2d12. What about 2d20 you ask? Don't be silly, that's too many numbers. You're silly. No one will want to play with you. These are just facts. As for opinions...it is my opinion that facts rule. D12 fo life.

Actually, six is a perfect number, but twelve is not. I think you need to check the definition of "perfect number" again. ☺ That said, the D12 is certainly the most _versatile_ die, and I would rank it at _least_ third. But versatility isn't everything.

@@danielreed3718 Any even-numbered die could be made using the "two-pyramids-glued-together" shape as a base and including the right amount of faces. You see Wheels putting together two d4s in the video. That would create an alternate version of the d6, not a d8, because two of those faces are actually inaccessible. Even a coin is shaped like this, kind of, both "pyramids" flattened to have just one face, for example. A d16 would have 8 faces on both "pyramids". Off-set them a bit to get that criss-cross pattern at the ring, if you wish. Realistically though, at some point it would become very difficult to keep the faces legible without increasing the size of the die. A d10.000 would be massive, and still have the faces so thin it'd be difficult to discern the score it gave.

I have seen another shape used for a d4 and honestly that might be my favourite die. Imagine, if you will, the d8, which Wheels has placed upon the top of this list. Now, picture yourself balancing the d8 on its equator, both points parallel to the surface. Inherently unstable, but not for long. Imagine grasping the points and extending the length of the d8 such that there are now 2 square based pyramids connected at the base by a cuboidal column. This shape brings to mind arcane crystals, while removing all of the flaws of the d4. It can now roll, and the result is presented on a beautifully flat slide that is easy to read. Thank you for joining me on this mystical journey into the cuboidal d4

This is an amazing video! I love it!! Here’s the real order: #6 D10 - It’s not a Platonic solid, so it’s shape is inherently unsatisfying. I do, however, love rolling two of them as percentile dice. #5 D4 - Yes it’s clunky to roll, but this is the outsiders dice. It’s just so unique it stands alone amongst the set. I just love the offbeat way you read it, and I don’t have trouble with the result; this die is never cocked. #4 D6 - Just too boring to get very high on the list. I roll fistfuls of these in war games and I just never want to see another one. #3 D8 - Yes this is a nice die that rolls well and does good damage, but it is just 2 D4s glued together, and it’s basically just an upgraded D6 #2 D20 - This is an incredibly cool die. 20 sides? Wow!! That means even a weak crappy unskilled character can roll high and beat someone that would normally be better than them. It gives you a nice bit of randomness to make things interesting. #1 D12 - This die truly inspires you. You feel the raw damage coming off of this thing. The shape is satisfyingly round like the D20, but with much clearer faces. The way 3 pentagons come together is very cool, how did they fit so many sides together? 12 is just a very nice number as well, incredibly divisible, 2, 3, 4 and 6 are all factors. It speaks to something sacred us, the 5th element Aether. Thanks again for the wonderful video! 😁

Some of my favourite dice I got from Amazon, in what appears to have been surplus from a Kickstarter (meaning I can't find them again to get more) and were named "DoubleSix". They are, quite simply, a D12 but numbered 1 to 6 twice (in pips, if that makes Wheel's like them any better). With a couple of younger children with... erratic dice rolling technique, these were perfect for improving the randomisation of the rolling, and no more prone to rolling off the table than a regular D6 (we started using rolling trays around the same time anyway). I have a set in the classic D6-style ivory w/ black pips, and a second set in a variety of colours. Great dice, and I pull them out every time we play a game that would otherwise require one or more regular D6.

It's a great feeling isn't it ?), and gives a whole lot of possibilities in terms of gameplay. Yes I said it, more is better as it gives you more options. Also probability in percentages is a big deal to me, as I can talk probability without looking like a big nerd that made the maths on every dice, every roll, with or without advantage and so on. Also it makes you feel so smart as you do quick yet complicated maths in your head, like 30+4=34, and I like feeling smart. The golf ball D100 is shit though.

To me the D6 will always be THE die for me, as I remember so many happy "trivial" board games such as "don't get angry" or the ones my friend made as a kid or simply yatzee on school trips. It's the die of family, unity, inclusivity and nostalgia. If you look back, that it was always there for you, to rely on. To lean yozr head against it's mathematical perfect shoulder to cry your heavy heart out. If it's not in play it still sits on the sidelines to cheer you up like your parents at your football game, in the front row. It makes a good counter, and cuddles up nicely with the three dozen other D6s we have in our dice jar, when the counter has to go higher than 6. The D6 is a good friend you will never abandon you ... Unless it DOES roll off the table.

6:41 "There's too much swing between each of the results." Yes! Thank you! A d20 simply has way too many faces for all of them to matter, and not have the game slog down simply due to the amount of variables. D&D has 4 scores that matter; failure, draw (when applicable), success, and critical hit (when applicable). A smaller die would also make integer bonuses more important, more meaningful. Since d20 swings so much, getting a +1 to the roll is practically meaningless.

Arguably the best platonic to build a system around for this reason.

One reason for this is that when it's paired with another d6 it makes what is my favorite TTRPG randomizer. 2d6 produces a range of numbers that is small enough to be manageable while being large enough to be interesting. It's also center-weighted, which means that the range of numbers (2--12) has more significance that it would appear to at first glance.

Personally, I just really like the shape of a d12. It's cool and modern, without being too abstract. 12 is so versatile in its divisibility that there's so much ease in understanding where you are in regards to different conditions with a roll. A d10 rolls weirdly, the spinning top shape males it feel like you're locked in to one of 5 outcomes just moments after the throw, and understanding how to read percentile dice is harder than rocketry. Number football over clown's top.

After playing with tons of systems and designing for years, I'd say d12 actually is a very nice and versatile die, but it is underused considering the potential. It can be paired with d10s too, while giving the values of '11' and '12' a special effect. Able to be divided by 2, 3, 4, and even 6. That could make it a perfect main die in a system. But still, d6 is the optimal one IMO, and d10 is on the edge of being granular enough and not that complicated while still benefiting from percentile values but I admit I hate the shape of it. Can't pinpoint that but something is not right with it. Instead of using a single die to resolve, dice pools or combining multiple dice always offer a more enjoyable experience in a tabletop game. Most of the granular choices for attributes, resources, stats and expansions for PC advancements fit videogames way smoother in comparison albeit with the traditional design choices and the common opinion has been settled towards this approach for ttrpgs. Innovation in play and simple but deep mechanics support a "more fun experience" better overall, and provide more exciting expansion options on top of the base created which both are the essential part of a good game design. So grant complexity through depth and more meaningful choices, and keep it simple in calculation, telegraphing and resolving. D20 is too plain and not suitable for this adequately I think. (Though there are some games that use it better like Symbaroum or 2d20) I am not sure about the d8s. Like the other dice are more flexible, goes better with the math or blends better. It is close to d10 but d10 is percentile at least. My ranking: worst to best = d4 < d8 < d20 < d12 < d10 < d6
@niemand7811 Жыл бұрын
you guys always come up with things nobody really thinks about. And also what on earth are those "magic" fun experience" and magic "meaningful choices" you keep talking about? If your DM does the job well, you will have a great experience and do meaningful choices. The dice are not the main atraction, the adventure is and to have a great time with other people playing a great game. You guys always babbling about dice fantasies as if you are PTSD struck autists.

@@niemand7811 That is the Game Design we talk about. Creating the platform for the game to function well and support these valuable moments to stand out and not be disrupted by tedious things. Nobody said you cannot do otherwise without these nor that these are the only ways to have fun. If the system is good and efficient you will have more chances for a fun experience and meaningful choices. Dice are by far the most used and known devices in the design of RPGs and seeing great creations makes us question why they work better. The arguments you mentioned are the essential process in storytelling they will always be bound to the players and dm no matter what but all those things nobody really thinks are the way of designers anyway. Better design leads to a better experience overall; it is not a binary situation with extreme ends. Also the discussions are about which mechanics SUIT the goal better NOT like "a d20 or d4 always ruins gameplay you cannot have fun with them". Besides RPGs are games too, it is a very complex form of it which mainly includes storytelling, roleplaying and gameplaying so you may deepdive into one of these segments. One can always ask why we even need a system but this question is being raised because of the vague structure of RPGs. That is why there are tons of different RPGs and people who love very different systems and aspects of them which makes them awesome. And lastly yes why bother with all these, what matters in the end is fun, exactly! That is the aim for the designers to consider and empower this idea and RPG is the perfect ground for this IMO. Some people want to engage in the design concept and strengthen their foundation for videogame design ability.

d12 is probably my favourite type of dice. 12 is such a neat number, mathematically speaking, to use as a base (in practical dice terms, this means if you can't find a d6, or god forbid a d4, or even if you need to randomize between 2 or 3 options, the d12 is suitable. Although for 2 options any of the standard array of dice would work, and I find the d12's roll not so much as to be impractical but sufficient to feel like the thing's rolled. I've just had too many experiences of a d6 not rolling quite _right_ when it hits the table to properly trust the blighters. I can certainly see the case for the d8, but I just prefer how the d12 rolls. ETA: I also have a weird sense of nostalgia for the d12, because a couple of games I played as a child, most importantly, unless my memory is deceiving me, including a TMNT with a really cool plastic board that was built into the box that opened like a giant VHS case, used one. I know one of the games I owned used one, and a far less interesting one themed around football my brother had also used one. But my favourite individual die is the large, brass, d20 my husband picked up for reasons that escape me - I can't even remember if it's a purchase he made for us when gifting a matching one to a mutual friend, or a present he got for me - that I don't think has ever been rolled outside of a dice tray because I'm pretty sure that thing would damage any table it was rolled on? Denting or scratching wood, scratching glass, etc, and god forbid if it went off the table! Never mind standing on a caltrop, if that thing landed on your foot you might wind up with a fracture. Impractical as all hell, but something about it just has an emotional weight comparable to it's physical weight that it's replaced the old pair of solid amber d6 (also impractical - the pips were a bad colour to read on the amber) I picked up when in Poland in 2003 as my favourite individual die despite the impracticalities of it.

I, personally, rather like the way a d12 rolls; so satisfying.

Legitimately disappointed the d12 didn't rank higher.

Strongly disagree, because for me, adaptability is the single most important factor of any dice. The more dice a singular die can replace, the objectively better it is (until you get into unreasonable variable minutia for a given system) because if you have that one adaptable die, you don't need the others it replaces. So for me, the ranking goes: #1- D20 (easily replaces D10 & D4, in a pinch it can replace any other die with rounded division and rerolling excess values, with the exception of the D12 which would have a 40% chance of requiring a reroll which would be admittedly unreasonable) #2- D12 (easily replaces D6 and D4, in a pinch it can replace D10 by declaring 11&12 rerolls) #3- D8 (Easily replaces D4, can replace D6 in a pinch) #4- D6 (The most common die is also the most mediocre, technically replacing a D12 if your roll twice first to determine if you are rolling for 1-6 or 7-12 and then rolling again for your value in the prescribed range, but that's pretty some pretty inelegant reverse engineering. Still, it's how you introduce dice to children and as a training wheel it does its job.) #5- D10 (In a pinch, can replace D4 and D8, but totally unnecessary because you can always just divide a D20 by 2 and round up so you never really need this die ever) #6 D4 (Totally agree, absolute trash, get rid of it)

The first d10s were just d20s numbered twice from 0-9. In fact, I think may have been the first used for the twenty sided dice, as most used this numbering pattern for a while (though usually with each set of 0-9 coloured differently so they *could* be used for a 1-20 distribution if necessary, and partly because it was felt too difficult to fit 2 digits on such small sides).
@georgesears9343 жыл бұрын
@@triangulan Interesting bit of history, and my point exactly. The D10 is just needless extravagance, invented by Big Die to push more math rocks on kids. D20, D12, and arguably D8 are the only dice you'll ever really need. Bin the rest. Seize the means of probability!

What no d30 (I have one but never found a use for it but to roll for highest number, and mine I'm the only one that has ever got a 30 on it) or d100 (the golf ball, use to have one found it on the street one day, but lost it later)?

I love my d16, which is an unholy amalgam of irregular faces-pentagons, quadrilaterals, and triangles. As it is endowed with the power of 2, I use it to generate 4 coinflips at once

Beautiful. On so many levels. My favourite die has to do with a roll. Irregardless of what system, the time you, as a Game Master/Storyteller/Keeper roll to see if an adversary manages to sneak toward the characters and you keep the result secret. The players know that something is happening but their characters are as of yet oblivious. That moment is gold.

I do love my entire set my better half got me for my birthday. Purple glitter metal die. They feel so tactile and look awesome. My fave is the D20 but playing a wild magic barbarian I'm coming around to the love of the D8, it just has a habit of rolling just what I need on the wild magic table and doesn't ever feel not fun.

D4 wins when it comes down to protect yourself against thiefs and other bad creatures ... I mean did you ever step on one? How ever my favorite dice is the D10. In combination with a second one you got the possibility to have a role for certain percentage which makes it super easy to understand the meaning of the role. You find it in Call of Cthulhu which is by far the greatest RPG system to start with. And if you go for the more role playing systems you land in the World of Darkness environment where the D10 is the only dice you need (of course you should have fifteen D10 but hey). D10 for King / Queen of all dices.

also D10's are useful for counters for other stuff. I used to use a set when playing Yugioh for my HP meter. Yeah.... if I was to rate the usual list of shapes... I'd put D10 as best.

I have a LOT of dice... like a problematically large number of dice... but in that hoard I have a small set of banged up, flakey, down right ugly dice from when they were first included in a box set of D&D decades ago... these were my older brother's dice and he passed them to me when I first learned to play. These are, in many sense, an heirloom... albeit a worthless one... especially as the d6 long ago went into some other board game and vanished... but for me they will always be a symbol that rpgs are somehow in my families blood, and represent a shared love with my big brother.

Are odd-numbered dice a thing? Imagine a D7 - it's got faces numbered 1 to 6, but with the addition of a zero providing room for abject failure. I've got one special die on my shelf that I never use: it's a D6, but crafted from a one-inch cube of solid brass with the pips drilled into the sides. Weighs a remarkable amount, and it would do awful damage to the tabletop if someone was brave or foolhardy enough to roll it.

I'm a long time wargamer (started back in the 90's), and am getting back into it. The d6 is my bread and butter, but is superior to all others for one simple reason: demand. Rarely will you ever be asked to roll more than two of any other die. Occasionally, if playing a healer, you'll need to roll three or four d8's. However, when a wizard can first cast it in D&D v3, a fireball calls for 5d6 and only increases from there. One gun in my warhammer 40k tanks delivers 40 shots per turn, each die likely being rolled three times. Ahh. For the sheer satisfaction that is the process of rolling dice, the d6 is king. Also, all you d8 lovers, but mostly you, Wheels, where have your precious pips gone on your octohedrons? They've forsaken you. They're mine. You'll never have them, for pips recognize the superior die. Mwuhahahahaha!

I must admit, when i thought about it at the start of the video, I chose the same winner. My first experience of non-D6 dice was in a Batman and a Turtles Board game from the early 90s or Kate 80s. I think one had a D8, and the other a D4. I thought they were ace!

I agree with your exposition, the Tetrahedron is a polygon, not a die. The D20 has another problem, it's usually less accurate: It's very hard to get all sides balanced, even though it rolls easily. One question: What do you think of the 18-sided die? 😁

Willing to accept that D20 might not be number 1, however I refuse to award the d8 with the highest spot. It's too close to being basically two d4s put together, and the d4 is too garbage to be even related to the number 1 spot.

Well I think we all agree if their were more Dice in the set then D4 would still be at the worst Die, can't we just glue two coins together at 90 degree angles and roll that instead? It would look terrible but be way more functional. Anyway personally am a D12 fan theirs something about the pointy bits on the D8 I don't like and the D12 somehow feels more chunky than a D10 whilst feeling more smooth i dunno that's my fav anyway.
