And here we are, the 10th samples episode! (and also the longest so far)
This video goes over the samples used in dds.wmv's magnum opus, "I'll Try Living Like This."
People have suggested that I go over this album since I started the series, and honestly, I can see why. ITLLT has some of the most creative sample warping/editing seen throughout the entire vaporwave scene.
Anyway, hope you enjoy! I definitely want to do a simpler album next time... lol

Samples you missed: - The "Mmm, mmm, mmm." vocals, and the chopped vocals throughout Somebody Home are also from Turn Off the Light - 혼자 남은 지금 꼴이 also samples Turn Off the Light (it's the super chopped vocals heard throughout the song, that play over Seperated) - 이보다 좋을 수는 없겠어 and CD Player pt III also make heavy use of Sailor Moon sound effects. - 내 마음은 떨고 samples sound effects from Neon Genesis Evangelion, as well as "Short Hair" by AOA Bonus: Loving Is Easy doesn't actually sample directly from PONPONPON, and instead uses Hatsune Miku to replay the vocals!

Which, I actually think, makes the cover of Kwon Mina even more fitting for her current public image: A chaotic, troubled person who needs professional help.

From what I saw on reddit a years ago, the whole section from the end of CD Factory was from a podcast or radio segment where a few psychologists (or something like that) were playing a part from the Legend of Zelda audio book and said that link's mother passing away (the woman heard) was a good candidate for something, hence the applause added in during her speaking. Not sure how true it is since the sample wasn't provided.

They talked about it on a podcast, which is now lost media as far as I know (the 3d Cast with 3d Blast NUWRLD Takeover if you want to try and find it). James explains it's a bit of an in-joke about Scientology, which encourages reliving your worst moments in order to achieve religious epiphany. The idea is that Link's father is reliving the moment of his wife's death during Link's birth, in order to become a better scientologist, and being applauded by the church. He also mentions that because the applause that he samples is a very old recording, everyone you hear in that clip is dead now. This is all just what I remember, I don't know if he's told this story anywhere else since. I'd love if someone could find that episode of the 3d Cast because there's a lot of interesting stuff in there. EDIT: Looks like it's not lost media! 3d Blast uploaded a version of it to KZbin, what a great guy. Definitely look that up for some good #NUWRLD lore

Good video! Stems do exist for the album and I have those, maybe those help with finding the samples, though I think you got p much everything. Also, take note of the variety of the samples. I know James has an interest in K-pop and has went to Korea and Japan numerous times, but I don't like how their music gets boiled down to "slowed down k-pop" sometimes, I've heard that so many times all over the internet. They bring so much cool stuff together into these heavy and emotional plunderphonic tracks.

Man how did they isolate the vocals from the tracks so well? I can never figure out how to do that.

Having some high quality sound files for songs and letting them pass through something like Spleeter usually gives you cool results. Sometimes, you can find acapella versions of some songs, so that's an absolute win. Some other times, you can find instrumental versions of songs... You can invert the phase of the instrumental, combine it with the final mix and you only have the vocals "extracted", if your files are good-enough quality and same exact speed and stuff like that. Sometimes, just isolating the left and right channels, inverting the phase of one of the two and combining them in mono can make *some* isolation happen as well if I remember correctly. There are other "sound engineer-grade" methods that I don't know about though ahah Hope this helps !

Around 5:40 when you say the Nelly Furtado vocals are changed using Ableton Beats Algorithm is this an official term? I love this technique and would like to learn more but I can't find any results when I search it.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure. If you go back to “Somebody Home” to where the sampled vocals are, you’ll notice that they sound choppy rather than sped up, and the same results can be yielded with that same Beats mode. I don’t think it’s officially called an algorithm, I just put that term there for sake of simplicity. Try searching up “Ableton Beats warping” or tutorials about warping in Ableton in general.

The “loving is easy” part? Those are also from Syoko’s “Criminal Shuffle”. Pretty much everything in Loving Is Easy besides the distorted PonPonPon vocals is based around that track.
