For beginners, when picking your primary colors, make sure to get a magenta, not a red, or else you won't get nice purples or pinks, but more browny or salmony like colors when mixing it with blue or white.

clø Reds like Magenta, or primary red have a purple/pinkish base to them, which means that when they are altered or mixed, their undertones will come out and tint the mix. So with magenta you will be able to optain nice pinks and bright purples. But Reds like spectrum or cadmiun have a more orange base, so will tend to have more yellow in the hue they create, resulting in salmon and rust colours if mixed with white, for example. Am I making sense ? Ideally, one could get both a cool (magenta, primary(in the winsor and newton set)) and a warm (spectrum, in the wn set) red to start, as they will allow someone to mix a wider range of secondary colours :)

Myriam... here's a tip you didn't mention... when painting with gouache... to prevent activating the underneath layers give your work a light spray of matte fixative between layers when dry... I've been using Krylon Matte Fixative since... like for ever... for my finished work whether it be charcoal, pencil, gouache, ink, even watercolors and sometimes pastels (be very careful with pastels) I use Krylon Matte Finish... which also comes in Gloss and Satin Finish as well... they will seal your work are absolutely waterproof and will NEVER yellow... I know because I've been using them for over 40 years NEVER NEVER NEVER use hair spray... because they will yellow over time, can become sticky under humid conditions can react with the chemicals and binders of your pigments and most of all they are not made for art work... Krylon is made for the artist and their work.

Hi Karl, I do address your point on hairspray in a pinned post at the top of the comments. You are absolutely right that it isn't the right thing to use, but because gouache doesn't require heavy fixing, a light dusting seems to be just fine, in my experience. But obviously I agree that it isn't the better choice, and to avoid it if possible. Your first tip is amazing, thank you for sharing, I'll make sure to implement it myself, I've wanted to try doing underpaintings more, but don't have acryla gouache for it.

Will using the fixative give the finished work more light permanence? I have only recently started painting again after a 20 odd year gap (!!), and have been using watercolour. I have watched hundreds of different tutorials (I'm frequently awake in the night with pain, so I watch the videos to take my mind off the pain), and as a result have bought an inexpensive set of gouache paints to try. I ultimately want to be able to frame my finished pieces and either give to friends and family as gifts, or hang on my own walls, so I just a little bit wary of using the gouache for that reason. All advice appreciated, thanks👍😊

The thing with art school is (I have a bachelors degree in visual art) they assume you already know the basics of all the art materials. You go to art school to explore mediums and be an artist, find your style. Art school is there to help you succeed as an artist not learn how to paint and draw.

Thank you for the incredible response to my gouache tutorial, nothing makes me happier than hearing that I could help other artists! :) You guys have been amazing in the comments, and there has been some great information shared that I wanted to pin for everyone to see so here goes : - A lot of people have been correcting me on the whole pan/tube things, and have mentioned that Caran d'Ache does a gouache in dried pans. I have not tried it myself but it's great to know, and I hope to be able to review it one day! :) (Credit : MsBeckySharp, PuchyTats, WhereAngelaArts, Kyomii, SharonBear, Stephanie Damianov, Douglas Elliot) - Regarding my hairspray tip, a couple of people have told me that it isn't ideal, as it is probable it will yellow and affect the work. I trust that is true, and although I also have had that problem with more professional fixatives, if you intend on exhibting or selling your originals, make sure to use a professional fixative (Connie Faye recommends Fix by Krylon. I have no experience with it myself. ) and ideally get one that is UV resistant. ( Credit : Connie Faye and Clariece K) - Jaune John recommends that, when putting a kit together, to choose a magenta rather than a red, as it will help get nicer purples and pinks when mixed with white and blue, as opposed to browny, salmony colours. - q8Asami taught me that the reason there are different versions of primary colours within the Winsor and Newton starter kit is because they include warm and cool hues of each three primaries, to aid in being able to mix all colours form that basic kit. - Douglas Elliot mentionned one could seal a painting with wax, and included a very useful link. I would try to avoid using hairspray on any art, especially if you plan on selling it or displaying it. Hairspray will most definitely yellow. Workable Fix from Krylon would be ideal to use. Krylon now makes a low odor Fixatif that's pretty good to use.

Thanks Connie, you are right, and somebody did mention this to me in the comments earlier on too. I merely suggest using hairspray for quick fixing, as gouache doesn't need an extensive amount of fixing, so a light spray is enough and doesn't affect the work as much, but you are absolutely right that for something more professional and durable one should use a good brand of fixative. Although most of them do yellow over time in my experience, unless properly UV resistant. Thank you for the brand suggestion too :)

The Miya himi brand of gouache sells their paints in ‘pans’. So you can technically find gouache out of tubes, even if it’s not common.

Love this tutorial, I watch it every now and then as a reminder. I use Royal Talens gouache which comes in little glass containers and I find that much more user-friendly than tube gouache. Worth a try if you're interested.

That starter kit at 28:05 that you call odd, is actualy the basic choice every art school in Finland uses. For every basic colour - red, blue and yellow - you get a warm and a cold variant. With those you can mix the secondary colours - green, orange and violet - as bright and clean as possible.

You did a great job of showing us how gouache effects work and don't work. I have wanted to try gouache for a while and bought a basic set of colors, but there was really very little information that I saw that showed useful information and techniques like this video does. I'm in love with your pallette I love messy and this video was so amazing I'm getting some gouache soon and it was so helpful. But using hairspray will make it yellow over time and make the paper brittle just letting you know BTW I love your paintings so much😁

Thank you very much, you actually reassured me that maybe I should've made a slightly cleaner one for the purpose of the video, I felt super self conscious, hahaha 😳 As for the hairspray, you are right of course, but that also happens with a bunch of artist grade sprays, and depends on the paper your are spraying on. You'd need a uv resistant spray to avoid that the best. Ultimately though you are absolutely right, in the sense that it's just better to use an artist grade spray to do extensive spraying, as they tend to be better quality, and have a more even coating spraying, but for gouache I tend to use hair spray because I don't need a lot of fixative, so a light spray is good enough for my use of it. But you're input definitely is a good point 😊

I was so excited for this video and I'm not disappointed in the slightest ❤️Thank you for taking the time to put this together, I can only imagine how much work it was! I completely agree about how important it is to get the amount of water correct! You know me already, I cheat and use this stuff like watercolour (but layering means I can build the opacity and so I prefer it over watercolour) but in the times I've wanted to venture into using it thicker/more opaque it's too dry! I even use hot press and it gives me a textured stroke, aggghhh lol! Also I've been using zinc white for my highlights and getting frustrated that it's not opaque enough, I had no idea there were 2 whites in gouache - doh! 😂 Great video Myriam! 😘😘

I bought acrylgouache for my first attempt at gouache which was a terrible idea. I really like it because I'm able to get in shadows better than I can with acrylic. But with acrylgouache it's really hard to reuse it after it's been dried, even when I used an airtight watercolor pallet. Hopefully I can get my hands on just reg gouache.

Yes, it's definitely not made to be deactivated. But how do you find it compared to acrylic? How are the working time, and the colours? You should definitely try normal gouache, I'd love to know if you like them better 😊

Great tutorial! I recently became interested in working with gouache as a medium for a change. Normally I use watercolor and acrylics but for quite a while I have been wanting something that's just in the middle :) Also I didn't notice the bird noises the background before you pointed it out as I got two loud budgies myself lol. Do you have pet birds as well?

I don't, no, I'd love to, but I can't really have pets in my current life set up. My studio/bedroom gives onto our garden, and I often have my windows open, so that's what the bird noises were :) I hope you'll enjoy gouache, I'd love to know how you get on!

Dont use hairspray on painting. Hairspray contains oils, that become yellow over time and sometimes even mold.

Thanks lovely! I'm glad it was helpful :) and sorry about the autofocus, I filmed this video over so many sittings that I sometimes forgot to turn it off. The little flip screen on my camera is surprisingly not that helpful when it comes to judging focus, haha. I do have a couple of sketchbook tours on my channel already, and a few sketchbooks on the go that I'm hoping to tour once finished. The problem with streaming isn't the platform but my internet connection. I'm not sure it is good enough to stream. But the best way to know is to try :) I also lack the time for streams, but it's definitely on my to do list :)

so, this video made me double check the tube of "watercolor" paint I thought I had purchased. I put the color in my water color palette and it keeps cracking and getting on the other water colors, and it was annoying and I didn't know why that kept happening.... well now I know!! lol I accidentally bought a tube of gouache instead of watercolor!!

Actually the W&N gouache set has all the colors you need. I looks like there is a warm & cool shade for each primary, plus black & white to make colors lighter or darker or to be used by themselves. I think the green is probably there to create more vibrant greens & maybe to make mixing greens easier in general? And yellow ochre is a staple color for watercolor/gouache artists especially for those who paint natural settings like Plein Air artists and is also good for mixing more earthy tones. There's no brown because you can make practically any shade you want by mixing the primaries. So basically you can make any color you want with this palette except for some of the more exotic colors that a beginner wouldn't need anyway. This is good because it forces you to learn color theory, which is not only good for making more natural colors that you see in the real world, but it saves you money from not having to buy extra tubes of paint if you are making your own colors. Thanks for the informative video.
