You're definitely right, Superman's world is so much bigger than just Metropolis. It contains things like distant futures, alien worlds and even concepts like the Fifth Dimension. You get a lot more variety than Batman, but at the same it means that Gotham is a lot more developed than Metropolis since Gotham is Batman's world while Metropolis is just a part of Superman's.

@nedzed3663 Жыл бұрын
I read this comic years ago and still is one of my favorite Superman stories. Grant Morrison was able to recapture all that Silver Age ridiculous sci-fi crazy shit from that era, make it cohesive and palatable to a 2000's era comic audience that was steeped in post crisis DC storytelling for better or worse (Morrison himself responsible for the better since he had come off his stellar run of Justice League or JLA that would inspire much of the DCAU). He even went back to the 1 Million series he penned years earlier in the aforementioned JLA run with referencing the various future Supermen, Solaris and the Bizarro Plague (which wasn't in the animated movie unfortunately, and though my personal favorite part of the story didn't detract from this movie being enjoyable). This was the perfect love letter to Superman the old and the new, you should read the graphic novels (collected in 2 trades by volumes) when you get the chance, it's been adapted pretty well in the movie though missing the creepy and sort of humorous Bizarro section, which again was my favorite part.

Somthing that I really appreciate about this movie that I don't think was in the book is Luthor's character development part of Supermans mission is to change people's heart's and if you're going to write the last Superman story you need to do that with his greatest enemie but because Luthor is a man of science you're not going to convince him with an example of kindness you have to literally show him the world in a different way but he's still a man of science so instead of confessing his sins to a priest he does it with a fellow scientist

People who say Superman is boring and overpowered really don't know Superman that well tbh Your analysis of his character is very spot on. I'm so glad you've been enjoying getting into Superman material and been having good time with it! Superman always gets me emotional, because with his unprecedented strength there's a lot he could do, but all he really wants is to do good. He is the definition of kindness and being humble. Forgiving an enemy is always something that's guaranteed to make me cry, because honestly it's one of the most difficult things someone can do. A lot of the time I see people making comparisons that Superman is like a god and people worship him, but that's not what Superman wants or sees in himself. He doesn't see himself as *above* others, he sees himself as one of them. With Batman a lot of the time I truly feel like Bruce Wayne is his mask and the cowl is his true face. But with Superman, Clark Kent is who he really is. Clark and Superman are both equally important and valid to his identity as a whole person, and he has such an appreciation for his human-styled life. He doesn't use it just to hide, it's part of who he really is. I recently saw a comic panel that epitomizes everything about Superman, in it he's in space and he's looking at the Earth as a whole and he says, "I love you."

But I do wish they had split it up into two movies to make time for all 12 issues. They gave that curtest to Dark Knight Returns and Long Halloween. I wish they could've made room for issues 6 and 10, they were definitely my favourite, and they're almost completely cut from this film. But still a great film.

That image of Superman fixing the sun is Lois's wishful thinking manifested. In the story, she doesn't accept his impending demise. In the end, she can't accept that he is gone and has crafted the palatable lie that he is in the sun, in steam punkian fashion, with gears and all, and "fixing" the sun, but Superman IS, in fact, dead.

There are so many Superman stories-and Batman stories-that trying to fit them into a single canon is essentially impossible. Superman has been in continual publication since 1938 (and Batman since 1939), with countless rebooted continuities, "elseworlds" stories, and adaptations that each put their own spin on things or dig deep to emphasise different elements. This is very much its own thing, an opportunity to showcase who Superman is at his core, but not necessarily bound to ongoing comics or the continuity of different adaptations.

This movie is based on the comic from the same name, the author envisioned that this Superman would turn into Superman One Million, a Superman that spent milleniums inside the sun, learning and getting stronger, that Superman appears in that comic, however, to give this Allstar Superman a proper ending, fans have the head-canon that this Superman that turns into Superman One Million is also the Superman of that same name that appeared a couple of decades before, in that comic he returned from the sun and was received by all the heroes in the multiverse, as a gift for all of what he did for his universe, they all rewarded him with a resurrected Lois that had almost his same super powers and revived all of planet Krypton.

"In the end, I saw Superman not as a superhero or even a science fiction character, but as a story of Everyman. We’re all Superman in our own adventures. We have our own Fortresses of Solitude we retreat to, with our own special collections of valued stuff, our own super-pets, our own “Bottle Cities” that we feel guilty for neglecting. We have our own peers and rivals and bizarre emotional or moral tangles to deal with. I felt I’d really grasped the concept when I saw him as Everyman, or rather as the dreamself of Everyman. That “S” is the radiant emblem of divinity we reveal when we rip off our stuffy shirts, our social masks, our neuroses, our constructed selves, and become who we truly are. Batman is obviously much cooler, but that’s because he’s a very energetic and adolescent fantasy character: a handsome billionaire playboy in black leather with a butler at this beck and call, better cars and gadgetry than James Bond, a horde of fetish femme fatales baying around his heels and no boss. That guy’s Superman day and night. Superman grew up baling hay on a farm. He goes to work, for a boss, in an office. He pines after a hard-working gal. Only when he tears off his shirt does that heroic, ideal inner self come to life. That’s actually a much more adult fantasy than the one Batman’s peddling but it also makes Superman a little harder to sell. He’s much more of a working class superhero. American writers often say they find it difficult to write Superman. They say he’s too powerful; you can’t give him problems. But Superman is a metaphor. For me, Superman has the same problems we do, but on a Paul Bunyan scale. If Superman walks the dog, he walks it around the asteroid belt because it can fly in space. When Superman’s relatives visit, they come from the 31st century and bring some hellish monster conqueror from the future. But it’s still a story about your relatives visiting." - Grant Morrison (Author of All-Star Superman)

If you want an extra comic recommendation that deals with Superman passing and what that means to others, read “The Death of Superman” from the early 1990s. Technically a trilogy of stories (Death of Superman, Funeral for a Friend, and Reign of the Supermen), it has been collected in trade paperback form multiple times over the years. This saga was also adapted fairly accurately into two animated films: The Death of Superman and Reign of the Supermen. Anyway, so good to see someone (possibly) around my age non-ironically liking Superman. Can’t wait until you reach stuff like the Justice League or even Batman Beyond in your DCAU watch through. Probably one of the best, if not the best Superman story, though not necessarily the best starting point, since it was written to be the final Superman adventure. And (original author) Grant Morrison loves drawing on every bit of continuity they can, so a first time reader/viewer will inevitably miss a lot of the references and homages. And no, Lois wasn't in denial at the end. There's a companion piece to this arc, also written by Morrison, that partially takes place thousands of years in the future called DC One Million. If you're looking to read quality Superman stories from his earliest days, I suggest Birthright for a great origin story, and Superman For All Seasons for a heartfelt take on the years that followed. ✌

Superman Earth One is a pretty good comic too, is its own universe, is about a young Clark Kent and his first years as Superman.

Thanks for the reaction. It’s so fascinating to see someone discovering Superman for the first time. Don’t worry too much about canon. At this point Superman is like King Arthur, there really isn’t a canon so much as a mythos of recurring characters, concepts and themes that different creators reinterpret & remix to tell interesting stories. I noticed several people recommending Superman Vs The Elite. I wholeheartedly agree and would also recommend Superman: The Man of Tomorrow, which focuses on Clark as an immigrant facing Xenophobia while trying to come to terms with his heritage.

I love this movie! The comic is still better, but that doesn’t take away how good this movie is. I tell people that say “Superman is boring and overpowered” to read or watch All-Star Superman. Grant Morrison’s best work on the character and Frank Quietly’s fabulous art make the story iconic. Morrison pulls some weird deep cuts in comics and makes the story more ethereal than literal, but they hit their Strive with the story. I also want to give a shout-out to Dwane Mcduffie, the writer of the movie who passed shortly after the movie came out. Mcduffie was very influential in DC comics withe creating the Milestone Characters and working on DC animated projects.

Being Quantum Locked at the heart of the Sun could be construed as Death. But Superman never really dies. 😊
