If you haven't seen Mike Stern play live, then book a trip to NYC when he's in town and find 55 Bar.

I get the bass pumping the/root with a funky line. I'm wondering, when you start using more tension how do you feel about the bass moving with you? Presuming of course that the bass is complimenting where you take it. The bass could just hold, or return to the root groove and it'd for sure work, or the bass could open it up. How much, if any movement of the bass do you prefer, generally speaking?

I saw Mike Stern and Jaco Pastorius I believe it would have been in the mid-80s at Hec Ed Auditorium which is where the UW Huskies played basketball here in Seattle. The two of those guys were like 2 of a perfect pair. I think that's what's the saying is! The synergy between the two of them was just phenomenal. Unfortunately that was during the time that both Jaco and Mike were using drugs and it was very apparent at that show. But, in spite of whatever substance those guys had on board they played some of the craziest shit I've ever heard , in a good way and in spite of their using not because of. I want to clarify that . It's been a long time since that show so I don't remember the lineup but I do remember the Bob Berg was playing sax. If you've never seen Mike Stern live you absolutely owe it to yourself, in fact you need to put that on your bucket list players of that you must see! I play guitar myself and I find his style, his approach to any given piece and his tone are so inspirational to me! And his instructional video such as this one are fantastic. He's a great teacher and has some really clever ways to approach soloing, comping and chord technique and voicings. Thank you for posting this!

diasspeed Except that it's not. It's a guitar with two humbucking pickups, whereas a Telecaster is a guitar with two single coil pickups. (Of course Fender too makes Telecaster-shaped guitars that aren't real Teles.)

No, you shouldn't warm up with the same things he does anyway. You should see how he's basically playing with rhythms and getting more complex as he goes. You should apply that to YOUR skillset. Take care and good luck!
