You can still watch this in 2021, and get the shivers. Crawford is just superb.

Just watched this and found it amazing. A must watch alongside "A face in the Crowd", "Ace in the hole" and "Network"

The book was excellent. I read it in college as a literature assignment. Best lit assignment ever! I couldn’t put it down.

Broderick must've hit the Sauce Hard in the years between this flick and HIGHWAY PATROL. He looks SO YOUNG here, yet it was made in 1949. HP was in the mid fifties.

Total knock-out movie, on a par with the Great Dictator. Broderick Crawford was a one of a kind.

Observations: 1. Rossen's themes on corruption were excellent, no doubt. However, this is BASED on Huey Long and there was a single3 Southern accent in the picture. Personally, I would have picked "The Heiress" as Best Picturre. However, I was only two years old at the time of the Oscars and they just weren't listening to me.

Louisiana is not a typical southern state and the people talked different.

Olivia DeHavilland in "The Heiress" and Broderick Crawford in this film were both most deserving of their Academy Award wins. For me "The Heiress" is the slightly better of two movies mainly because of DeHavilland's spellbinding performance. I was only seven years old at the time these films were released and didn't see them until I grew up and saw them on TCM.

But the book the film is based on, by Robert Penn Warren, is so much better! Much more than a fictionalized account of the rise and fall of Huey Long.
