This just feels like pay to play between cgc and auction houses. Even feels worse now that these appear to have gone to comic link.

and it's not new either. Check out the books in this submission from 2009. 0790587001-021 guy submitted 21 books and got one 9.8, two 10.0's and eighteen 9.9's. That's insane.

So basically CGC has not been doing the job that people were paying them for, and were handing out incorrect grades. Sounds like a class action lawsuit to me.

I’m not a graded book hater but I don’t understand why people would submit to CGC after they flat out said the job they were paid to do the just didn’t do it. Anyone who sent them a book to grade that came back a 9.8 needs to question why cgc didn’t do the only thing they were paid to do and grade the book. I don’t care if they were inundated with submissions that doesn’t give you the right to sell people a service and not do that service. Other grading companies paused submissions or pushed back return times. CGC was just like we’ll just do a piss poor job no one will care because they like the look of our paper label more than other grading companies paper label

CGC was acquired by Blackstone in 2021. It's all a corporate shell game at this point. Every institution that relies upon the stock market needs to make money. How is CGC going to make money if they already rated all the books out there? Seems like a horrible business model since at some point the supply of Golden/Silver/Bronze Age books would (theoretically) dry up. Unless you are intentionally setting up a built-in fraudulent empire.

It's way easier for a manager to say, "Out of this stack of pre-screened 9.8s choose one 10 and a few 9.9s." than it is to say, "Grade each of these books based on strict grading guidelines."

Exactly right, hitting just one 9.9 pays for the whole racket. And pretty much the only people who have the cash flow to sink on 75 9.8s are dealers and auction houses. We're definitely going to see this on ASM 300 and all the other Copper keys with a ton of 9.8s.

Actually thankful for all this BS from CGC. Turns me off to collecting moderns and grading. I have really enjoyed turning my attention to Silver and Golden books. And yes this sounds like a class action lawsuit. Paraphrasing “… we have a grading scale that goes to 10 but we did not have the capacity to look for 9.9’s and 10’s. Your 9.8’s might be 9,9’s or 10’s. Resubmit and pay again…”. Sounds fraudulent.

After numerous things going on with CGC in the past year, TO me they re no longer a reputable company anymore. Looks like a clear case of company collusion and possible fraud to me. Definitely proves that the term " Independent 3rd party grading" is a lie. This should really stop people buying from the auction houses and sending stuff to cgc. It won't , but anyone that has bought one of those 9.9's should really be looking into whether they have/are been scammed by the auction houses selling these books.

I didn't watch this whole video so forgive me if you covered this, but I've sent many many many books to CGC since they first opened in 2001 and there's so many reasons why 9.9's and 10s are being seen now, but pressing and cleaning have a LOT to do with it. As far as a stack of books coming out as 9.9 who knows somebody may have found a giant collection of someone that took care of their books INSANELY and then sent them in. But that's just one of many examples I would LOVE to discuss with someone. I've tested CGC at my own cost for my own reasons and sent in several books after cracking them open to see if a different grade would come and they have yet to change that grade. (Except for signing events. Which I will NEVER ever do again) But they chalked that up to the Creator signing it potentially messing it up. Again, another thing I would LOVE to discuss with anybody that enjoys taking nerd stuff. I do hear a lot of people hating on CGC but without a grading company I would completely get out of comic books because according to every stupid collector I've ever done business with their comic books are 9.8 near mint and the same ones that are bitching about CGC's grading are the ones comparing their raw books to CGC's grading if you don't like CGC's grading don't use them it's that simple keep your raw book and tell everybody how wonderful it is and be happy about it. It gets under my skin.
@ChienandKun

Tell me something, at one point does pressing become an important part of this argument? You've got channels that are consistently able to press sometimes highly damaged copies, to 9.8's, and then submit them! No one cares, because they want to take their gamble in the pressing game too. Well, what if they can press a 9.6 to what looks like a 9.9? What then? Also, do not ignore that the owners of a major auction house were key players in the coin slabbing bubble in the 80's (see Karl Jobst's 'Fraud in the Video Game Grading Industry' video). The coin crash and ensuing lawsuits involved 'overvalued goods'...sound familiar? Especially if say, someone is grading something as perfect, when it has only been pressed to disguise its actual use and flaws.
@punyhuman67
@punyhuman67 4 ай бұрын
Well that explains a lot. Checking the grade should not be arbitrary, a 1.0 or 10.0. I am paying for the book to be graded. Also, "what if" they are cracked, cleaned, sent back and "what if" the label is not sent back with it (so as not to look back at previous notes), now the census is skewed... just like cgc's grading scam.

It won't be long now before CGC decides to start making it harder, if not impossible for the average collector / detective to get this sort of information. They'll come up with some bs reasoning, like their new grading methods/standards require a change in how they deliver info, which will be a complete falsehood, but they'll do it. And we'll rant and rave about it, like every other "controversy" stemming from CGC. And it won't change anything. We'll just keep on sending them our books en masse...

in 1982 when the wolverine mini series came out i was a relatively new collector i didnt bag and board my comics i just wanted to read them and maybe even build a full set of my favorite titles. of course building a full run of batman or detective was out of the question even then so anytime a new #1 comic came out id jump on it thinking a full run on that title was doable. that is what i thought of as collecting comic books. the wolverine mini series completely changed that definition for me when i saw people pre-ordering 10-20 issues and id heard rumours of some adults pre-ordering hundreds of issues (wolverine was relatively new and insanely popular). as soon as the books were delivered they were no longer available at cover price. i cant recall what the price on that first issue was a week after it came out but im gonna guess guess maybe $3-6. the funny part is that when people who had bought multiple copies came in with their duplicates to sell at a profit the store had zero interest in buying them at any price. its not shocking to me that someone had a couple of hundred of those books to send in for grading/slabbing i dont think there is any monkey business going on with cgc its just that there were a lot of speculators buying massive amounts of some books. i was very new to comic book shops at that time before that id buy my books at mainly at department stores, pharmacies or thrift stores so i cant say for sure but that wolverine mini series seems to me like the start of that kind of speculation. everyone knew that mini series was coming and they knew there would be a lot of demand for it. its not like just another generic comic book that contained the first appearance of someone who would later become a big deal not the sort of book anyone bought and stored away a few hundred issues of. ive been out of the comic book scene for over 20 years so im just mumbling out of my ass basicly hehe

I recently pressed one of those Wolverines #1, and the paper quality was pretty decent. I don't think ComicLink sent in 9.8 slabs. I bet they bought a collection from a collector who purchased many of those issues on day 1. The comics you were showing from the 90s all have crap paper quality. Especially the New Mutants #87. The paper from that era is just super thin.

If I just had 70 Wolverine 1s come back as 9.8s, I would promptly crack them open, add 5 more high-grade Wolverine 1s and send three 25-book submissions right back to CGC. If grading by comparison worked once, it will work twice.

Those Bronze and Cooper books are tough holds right now in 9.8 or 9.9. I think it’s clear there is a cheat code and CGC is looking harder for 9.9’s. I suspect that will encourage more of those to be submitted to see if you hit the 9.9 lottery. You also said it, just be aware. This is real money. The supply could be growing more than usual in key books soon chasing that 9.9.
