The problem of letting go of items that have memories or emotions attached - I know that so well. It was so hard for me to overcome this and let them go. And you know the worst thing? There were some items that had negative memories attached to them! I used to own a sweater which I wore only once. And that one time wearing it I was fat-shamed. Never wore it again. But every time I saw it in the closet the mean comments would echo in my ears. Donating this sweater was the most healing thing for my confidence! The clothes with good memories were cut into pieces and are now a patchwork blanket on my bed.

I was in the habit of shopping with my daughter every Saturday morning. now that I have been in house for the last 8 weeks, all I miss is my daughter. apparently we shop for entertainment. when we get out again, we will have to replace that with walking in parks, gardens, and walking paths through our town. shopping leads to buying leads to accumulating stuff.

While I don't consider myself a minimalist, I only choose to buy things that reeeeally add a lot of simple joys and pleasures to my life. They have to add something beneficial to my life experience. And I've noticed that not everything is essential and vital to my well-being, and in turn, I have way less stuff! and I'm more grateful! :)

minimalism always makes me think of that scene in labyrinth, where she cant remember why she's there and the little goblin lady is piling all the "shiny" things on her 😂 til she screams "it's all junk! i have to save Toby!' and it reveals she's actually in a junkyard 😂 i dunno, seems like a poignant metaphor for humanity haha btw that was such a beautiful genuine video, related to all of it, thanks! ☺️

Through minimalism, I feel like I have more room to work out what sort of things I really love. Having a dresser full of clothing I didn't wear created a huge barrier for finding my personal style: I just couldn't justify buying more clothes. I still own a lot of clothing, but I'm a lot more intentional about what I buy. Instead of impulse buying things, I plan purchases for months before making them, and enjoy things a lot more. Also, planning to make a purchase beforehand makes me feel a lot better about spending a bit more to get items I really value.

A very realistic approach to minimalism , and it is very similar to mine! I found time to exercise more, keep my house clean and tidy for longer and I stopped being jealous as well, I’m happy with my possessions and I want to simplify my life even more! 🌹🌹🌹❤️

I feel like minimalism starts with acceptance first. To be a minimalist you must accept that you're going to be lacking some things and that's fine, you must accept to let go of things, desires or situations and welcome them only when they present themselves to you. I often feel like I am a petty child that has a neverending longing for "stuff", when in reality most of the things I spend money on are either food (I have a different diet from my family), clothes (which make me very very happy even though I should be more careful about what I choose to spend my money on) and fabric or stuff that I need for my crafts, like sewing, drawing or gardening. There are still so many things I would get if I could, but I'm thankful that I've learned how to be more grounded and less demanding. I don't define myself as a minimalist, but I naturally adopted some aspects of minimalism. And it's partially thanks to you, Jenny Mustard and Sarah Hawkinson.

I grew up in a minimalistic environment and we always bought used things and sold or gave away things. I think it’s helped me a lot as an adult and I have always been grateful to have grown up that way because I think it’s such an easier way to live.

3:48 I agree with you completely! I love the amount of stuff I have and am so happy with my capsule wardrobe. Some closet tours and declutters I've watched my mouth would just hang open in shock by the sheer volume of clothes. It actually makes me quite sad that people feel stressed and overwhelmed by their things, and I can't help but think of how much money has been spent that could really help people if it was put to different use.

Becoming more minimalist and conscious of my purchases has helped me in so many ways! I think the biggest one is being able to save more money! ❤️ Just $27 of mindless spending every single day works out to be $10,000 a year! When I realized this I made some big changes and I will never go back 😊

I think minimalism helped to calm me quite a bit. I would feel stressed out when opening the closet, because I would feel guilty for not wearing 60% of my clothes. I would lose my mind when trying to find this one particular thing I needed. I was also really influenced by beauty youtubers - constantly buying more make up while only using 2 or 3 items. What I own, should make ME happy, but like you I would feel guilty when I received something I didn't like, or I know I wouldn't use at all. So now, when someone asks me what I would like to get as a present - I just tell them :)

I grew up going through my belongings every season to declutter and donate what wasn't used. As I've gotten older, it's become more present in my life - especially since I have a kid. All of my clothes, from socks to cardigans and not including my seasonal jackets, fit into a two drawer and one bar armoire. I have eight pairs of footwear. And it makes me happy. Because there's no stress of what I should wear. My books and art supplies are a little different They bring me joy so I tend to hold on. But after a years if I haven't used certain supplies, I give them to one of my cousins or my niece. much simpler and I'm happy they'll be used and loved by those talented kids

I read Marie Kondo's book and I threw away 60% of my posessions. It feels amazing to know from a single look where everything you own is. Life is more efficient and organized now that I don't have to search for things 💖. I also think twice before buying random objects in shopping sprees. Most things are actually unnecessary 😁

I love your honesty on this topic, it really shows a way of minimalism that a lot of people don't consider might work amazingly for them. I actually used to feel guilty/jealous about not going to university, when almost all my classmates and friends did. But after a while (mostly after a lot of them finished) I realised that I actually like my job, don't have any ambition to have more responsibilities there and make more money. Plus I was really secure in my life already while all the others where still searching for a job or working one that was far beneath their level of education. Since that time I begann being really content with what I have and do and been also thinking about owning less stuff, because that is what actually stresses me out and makes me waste time, when I could be doing more enjoyable things :D

Well said!! I found that the more items I owned the more time I spent cleaning, maintaining, and storing them; sometimes not even using them but possessing them because I had an emotional attachment to them. Even donating items was based on who I thought would take the best care of them. I have made similar changes as you and am less jealous! What a nice feeling of relief to have less clutter and mental peace in our lives. Thanks for sharing!

I kind of understand this (quantity over quality) and like you I'be become a fan of having better things rather than more things. However I struggle a bit with minimalism as I enjoy collecting things, I collect art prints and I love writing and receiving letters and postcards, I feel like especially those add more o clutter than anything else, but they do bring me joy haha (I also have a ton of books, excluding art books, I am trying to transition into digital books). But your channel has had a 'minimalism impact' on me, I've started paying much more attention to my clothes and separating from the ones I don't use or that I felt guilty on parting with even if they were nothing but a memory. Age also has helped me with these concepts, I think I rather spend my money on a well spent afternoon at a cafe with a friend and if I do spend it on a item I try to get something that will be more long lasting and of good quality. Also beautiful Jumper, whoever made it has very talented hands ;)

I don't want to say that I'm a minimalist because most minimalists don't seem to understand that I like keeping stuff that has fond memories and/or could have a use in the next year. I also like collecting things for the future. I kept my stuffed animals for seven years and now my niephlings are playing with them. (I mean I could use my fabric stash all in the next year, but I probably won't.)

I would describe myself as a minimalist and I think sentimental things are some of the most important to keep! In my opinion, minimalism is about keeping the things that matter most to you and enrich your life, so sentimental items would be high on that list.

I have had a similar journey from "quantity over quality" to wanting things to be simple, uncluttered and to last as long as possible. The next stage of this journey is having a baby and maintaining the minimalist/uncluttered lifestyle we both want to some degree, which will involve some boundaries with friends and family (e.g. we've asked for no plastic toys) - fingers crossed!!! We'll see how the next chapter goes :) thanks Lucy, love your videos xxx

About 'emotional objects' and objects with a story: I usually use them for decoration around my house, because that makes me feel like I'm inside my own story. Then if there's an object that isn't particularly aesthetic but it helps me remind me of a good time in my life, I have a box where I keep all those objects - little papers, letters, souvenirs, a stick from a park... you name it. And then every now and then, I open the box and look at it and smile at the memories. They're organized, I know they're there and I didn't have to throw them away. And I can always discard, donate or sell something if I feel it longer brings up good memories. I really like this method and works wonderfully for me.

I had to really evaluate my life and possessions a few years ago when I moved out of a 2 bedroom house into a tiny apartment. I was shocked at how much I had actually accumulated over the years, and since I couldn't afford storage I had to start selling and giving stuff away just to get rid of it. Less clutter means less to clean and stress about though!

I can relate to this a lot. To me is not having few things (this concept can vary anyway, how much is few? How much a lot?) but to have an amount of things I can feel comfortable with and I'm happy to be surrounded by. And I agree, keep only things you love, doesn't matter if they are gifts from love ones. Loved ones are in our hearts, it's beautiful to have a physical object but if we feel a connection with it :)

I am very similar to u in how I am “minimal”. And I totally agree with everything you were saying about how you felt towards belongings before and after minimizing things. I used to be envious of things, and now it just stresses me to think about having a lot of stuff. I also really get what you mean about receiving gifts and keeping gifts that you may not need/want. In past years when it’s come to Christmas and bday, I always tell family that what I’d really love is to do something together; give me something I can use up like tea, or something I need but only get every once in a while like a journal.

Enjoying chai with almond milk! I really appreciate your transparency of feelings that come along with having/wanting stuff! I like that you can address feelings that you had without making yourself (or anyone else) feel bad for recognizing those emotions. You seem to extend grace to your past self and how you’ve grown! It is not an overnight transition but the unexpected feelings that come along with materialism are not apparent until the minimalist approach is adopted! Makes me want to go through my closets!

Minimalism is a process that takes time to make it a lifestyle. It won’t help to just declutter your closet or makeup collection in one day, throwing the things away and then realising that maybe it was a mistake or that you are now missing some stuff and buying replacement. What helps me in the process is the quality over quantity, and will I really use it enough. For example in my makeup collection, I only own mascara, concealer, powder, blush, one eyeshadow pallete and one lipgloss. One of each, not a gazillion mascaras, blushes, etc. But that was easy compared to the closet. Because in order to having it minimal in the end, I have to start the journey of buying thoughtfully. Things that are good quality and will last, and that fit me very well and I really like them. And also they must be versatile in order to go with most of the other things I own, so I don’t get that “I have nothing to wear” thought while looking into my full wardrobe. I love having a clear overview of my stuff and having the place clear and clutter free, so having less leads to having less stuff to store/put away, it’s easier to keep the place tidy and somehow it also helps having a clear mind. Thank you for sharing your thoughts Loepsie, great video ☺️

i absolutely cannot imagine to live a minimalist lifestyle, but i also dont experience jelousy, i never really never have. also i dont spend a lot of money because i don t have a lot and will never have, i suppose. i cherish and value my belongings especially those with a non-monetary value, which are most of my belongings. i have always been very clear about what i want and what makes me happy (not only when it comes to buying) and minimalism is for sure not one of them, though it's quite amusing to hear how different most ppl seem to feel about it. like i said, i have always felt like that but losing the most important person in my life a couple of years ago made me even more sure of the fact that i will never ever abstain of anything again if i can have it as long as i can afford it. i still save a lot, but i am no longer abstain from so much like before. minimalism would be my absolute hell, but everyone like he wishes.

Yes! We were hoping to buy a house sometime this year in fact, but have decided to wait until the pandemic is over completely. I'd love to move someplace more spacious and green, and personally don't care for city life too much. Plus, we likely won't be able to buy an actual house in one of the big cities here with the way the market is right now anyway, and I'd rather not buy a condo.

You look absolutely stunning in this video! Would love to know what your lip colour is. Also, your description of your minimalist philosophy really reminds me of what's at the essence of Marie Kondo's philosophy. I think a lot of it got lost in translation and the Hollywood-ification, but keeping things of value and feeling free to let go of things that don't have a place in your life is more what it's about.

My husband's mindset concerning gifts is: "you're not supposed EVER to get rid of it because it was a gift; how can you even think about giving it away, don't you have a heart?" As a result of this, I have a small pile of clothing gifted to me by his mother (who's language of love is totally gifts) which either doesn't fit me or is horrible quality or I just look stupid in it. Fortunately, seeing this pile grow up, hubby started changing his mind a little... because he's also a minimalist and is bothered to have unused things lying around XD (On the other hand, my mother-in-law managed also to give me a few items I totally love and use as much as I can ;) The proportion is not favourable though...)

You say your hair is getting thinner again but i think it looks great! Very healthy and full of volume 😁 In regards to the topic mentioned in the video, i wouldnt really call myself a minimalist but i have been reflecting on how little i actually need in order to live comfortably and in a "truer" way, if that makes any sense. I dont agree with the most extreme forms of minimalism (i think there is a very high chance of slipping into nihilism...) but the mildest forms offer a new, more genuine perspective in life!!

And I once knew a minimalist who had a lot of memories attached to things too. What she did was take a picture of that thing, print it on a piece of paper and then she wrote down the memory attached to that thing in as much detail as she could remember on the back of the page and sometimes the memory took up five pages! And then she put the picture and the memory in a big binder she had. So that way she had the pictures and the memories without all the clutter! It was basically a memory book :) maybe something like that would help

@@WhitneyDahlin If I had someone to give them to I'd obviously do that😂 I don't have friends that would want a vase or a frame or a clock that I only keep for several years bc they were gifts..

@@mariakalle9881 You could give them to second hand shops. That way other people who do like them can buy them. You also won't feel as awful getting rid of them this way because you know they will make someone else happy.

Hi loepsie, this video reminded me the video you made when you were trying to use your phone less. Just wanted to know how is that going still? Have you found yourself reaching for it often again. With the world hiw it is right now, I have found myself on my phone more often than before

That went out the window as the pandemic hit, haha 🙈 I don't think my screen time has ever been as high as those first few weeks. I feel much better now though and have gone back to some rules I set for myself in regards to screen time, so we're moving in the right direction 😁

My mother, I swear she is a hoarder. We have stuff to put in yard sales but most of it clothing. People hardly buy clothing they want actual items like furniture toys movies etc. Yard sales happen like less than 3x a year so most of it is sitting there collecting dust. She hangs on to the hope that it will sell but come on on! A couple of bucks isnt worth having them around for years. If it's old, toss/donate. You can always buy new. That is my mindset. Clothing and decorating items have existed since forever, they're not going anywhere. I rather buy things that I know I will enjoy no matter the price, there is also no shame in returning!
