On January 9th, 1997, Bowie played a concert at Madison Square Garden to celebrate his 50th birthday (although his birthday was the previous day). Guest performers included Billy Corgan, Frank Black, Sonic Youth, Robert Smith of The Cure, Brian Molko, and Lou Reed.

Billy Corgan was the biggest star at the time so he came on last! You can hear Bowie's famous "I don't know where I'm going from here but I promise it won't be boring." Luckily for us the next years brought us Earthling, hours ..., Toy, Heathen, Reality, The Next Day and Blackstar.... Not boring.

? Corgan is an excellent songwriter. There's no need to compare. They're both great and do their own thing.

Billy looks so proud to be there...it is so sweet. They are both talented musicians and clearly have a mutual respect for one another and a genuine love of music. Bowie is of cores the father of rock and role, but they are both the cat’s whiskers.

Love collaborations, and love this one by two of my fave artists. Love how Billy says "road race (or rage??) instead of the Cockney rhyming slang "boat race". Lost in translation across the ocean - brilliant!

the first rock concert I ever saw was Bowie at the Boston Garden, St. Patrick's day 1975. I was 15.He had just morphed from Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke.Young Americans, which he was touring for,is one of the best-produced pieces of vinyl ever created..Reeves Gabrels, Bowie's longtime guitarist, is a genius in his own right. Bowie's decision to invite Billy Corgan to share the stage with him for 2 songs at this concert speaks for itself..And lets hope Bowie releases new material soon!!

When Mott turned down Suffragete City, Bowie hadn't written it yet. He wrote as a replacement just for them. He ended up jacking it back after it got so big. Amazing song though... I'd want credit for it too.

- "He was born, illegitimately, David Robert Jones on 8 January 1947" ("Bowie: Loving The Alien" by Christopher Sandford) - "On 8 January 1947....Peggy Burns gave birth to a baby boy (David Bowie)." ("The Complete David Bowie" by Nicholas Pegg" Just to name a couple of the several books that list Bowie's birthday, and none of which mention him changing his birth date. Check any of the major Bowie fan sites online or Wikipedia. January 8, 1947.
