At first through stories of Mimir, Thor sounds like a evil guy that does evil for fun or arrogance. But through the story of this game, more you realize Odin is the one causing him to do things he does. That's why he keeps drinking alcohol likely to forget it. Odin tells him "You don't think" likely referencing Thor shouldn't care about murdering the innocent is a right or wrong thing. That's why Thor also says "I love Hel walkers, you don't have to think after killing them" or something like that to Atreus. He regrets his actions but can't refuse orders of Odin. Likely he is afraid of him or worried about his family if he refuse Odin.

That was the best thing about Thor. Even with all his strength, power, and durability he just wants his father to be proud of him. Not completely unlike Atreus. It really hits home when you consider that we see Thor both through his own actions and dialogue with his wife that he was/is a loving father and supporter and that it was most likely out of a sense of fear, and duty to Odin, his father, and his insecurities over Baldur being the favorite son that led him to commit all those atrocities across the realms.

You can clearly see the Kratos from God of war 3 in Thor. Being used to kill, made a killing machine. Having a daughter like Kratos did. That is why Kratos tried talking to him to make him realise what Kratos took time to realise. They're not only killers but fathers.

It was Odin who caused their arrogance and deaths by sending them to very dangerous missions with unstable Baldur as their last companion. Thor likely beat Modi when he was drunk, and seeing him as responsible as Magni's death instead blaming Odin. (He did the same mistake with Atreus when he blamed him for death of his sons while Sif was trying to explain him Odin's problems)

I'm sure they had their moments where they did good, but overall they failed Magni and Modi just as badly as Odin failed Thor and Heimdall. Modi is even hinted at possibly having some pe80philic tendencies (hinted in GoW 2018).

Odin says thor started drinking again by himself, which is technically true. When you look at the intro cutscene Thor comments Kratos should have warned him when he pours the drink. The drinks were for Kratos & Boy. Considering the way he acts with the alcohol its clear he's a recovering alcoholic. Then there's the meeting itself. Knowing that the Crows are Odin's eyes its pretty safe to say that Odin was controlled the entire situation from how stilted it all was and was probably feeding Thor lines. He says Thor isn't fun anymore before pushing the cup towards him. He didn't make Thor drink per say, just pushed him so he would pick up the bottle again. Manipulative father to a Tee

@@jmb72390 People love to overestimate Faye’s combat prowess due to the fact that she fought Thor to a stalemate. On paper that is impressive, until you consider that Faye was not only sober but completely bloodlusted, whereas Thor was drunk to the point that he couldn’t even remember the fight happening at all, despite it obviously occurring for quite some time given the radius that they covered. He must have been very deep in his cups for that to happen, maybe even worse than when we saw him outside the tavern, given he was still able to remember what he’d been doing afterwards. Most she could do at her absolute best, against Thor at perhaps his utter worst, was a stalemate. If Faye had him beat, she would have killed him, given how much she despised the Aesir. The implication is that she wasn’t capable of doing so.

A tiny bit of Thors story is that when Odin kills him, he does it quickly after Thor tosses away the hammer with very little hesitation . It really reinforces the idea that Odin has always thought of Thor as nothing but a weapon to throw away when it’s no longer useful.

I think that's kind of the point. I suspect that if he truly let go, he could destroy all of them. Maybe not easily, but nobody can stand in his way if he lets the monster loose. The hardest battle he fights is not against any god or monster, it is against the monster that lives within himself. If that was let out, I even suspect that he could beat anyone "easily" but the cost would be far too high. That same unstoppable force that destroyed the entire greek pantheon, also killed his own wife and child. Losing control of himself would not just destroy another world, but it could also destroy his final chance to prove everyone (including himself) wrong - that he is not a monster that can never change. "We must be better" is a hopeful yet desperate mantra. It's very different from "We can choose to be better" which is a statement that comes from certainty - the word "must" underlines an uncertainty. A desperate hope that despite what everyone has told him, despite what he may actually believe himself - HAS to be a possibility for him. This is why he is so reluctant to kill any god he meets now. When he yells at Atreus that there are consequences to killing a god (or anyone) is not a fear of retribution, or a fear that the world might suffer - but the fear that in doing so, you are taking away their chance to change and become better. If someone doesn't deserve a chance becuase of their past, then Kratos absolutely deserves to die. This game is very special. It asks some deep and important questions and it deals with some very profound issues in a fantastic way! These two titles honestly deserve to be hailed and treated as landmarks in gaming history. Not just for the acting performances, the incredible visuals, and the amazing score, but for elevating story telling and subject matter in this media. This could very well mark the beginning of something new. I can easily see a future where video games can compete with every other vehicle for story telling. Stories like this one, told like this - deserves as much praise as any movie or Tv-show I have ever seen. And it deserves to be seen and talked about by the general public and not just gamers. Sorry for the long ass essay! 😅 But this game merits long conversations! And it deserves to be taken seriously as a piece of art!

I think Thor could've been a good man if Odin hadn't abused and corrupted him. Thor was a belligerent prick and a blunt instrument, but he put his heart into his family and struggled with alcoholism and depression when he failed to protect them. He was almost as bad as Odin was when it came to abuse, but he could've changed. And probably wouldn't have needed to if Odin wasn't such a bad influence.

48:41 this question really drives home what Odin thinks of Thor. Thor is a blunt instrument to Odin, a bludgeon to destroy his enemies, a tool of death he can hold over everyone and anyone. When he asks: "Are you broken?" While it can be interpreted in a couple of ways, what he means is, is my tool broken? Is my knife chipped, is my chisel snapped? That's what he's asking. He almost doesn't even see Thor as a person anymore. And the truth is, Thor is broken. Broken by his father, who never wanted him to think for himself, who only wanted Thor to kill and destroy when he commanded it, to deaden his heart to the suffering of others and obey without question. He never shows any affection or appreciation for everything Thor has sacrificed, the horrors Thor has witnessed in fulfilling the All Fathers commands. There is no love in Odin for Thor. And there's a reason for it. Because Odin fears Thor. He knows precisely how dangerous Thor is, he MADE Thor. And so, the moment he sees even the faintest possibility of his greatest weapon, turning in his hand against him. He kills him. And the only regret he feels, is the regret of loosing his favored tool. He doesn't care that he just killed his own son. In that moment, we truly see what a monster Odin is.

Abso-fucking-lutely Thor wasn't even a human being for Odin, just another means to an end in his way to achieve the only true valuable thing in his eyes in life- knowledge. And Thor suffers for it since he's torn between being a good family man to sif and thrud, and being a good son to Odin (which he didn't realize was never an option until the end sadly). I actually never thought of the idea that Odin was afraid of Thor, but it can explain a lot😄 I always assumed that Odin was simply very decisive. And whatever he doesn't like, he gets rid of it. And indeed he only felt bad because Thor was a powerful tool and it saddened him to lose it

I love the display of manipulation by Odin where he slams down the mead in front of Thor to drink it, and when he doesn't he attacks Thor's character. But when Sif questions his motives after barely caring that Hiemdall is dead, he says Thor become a drunk again all on his own. In some ways I wish we got an Odin more akin to Anthony Hopkins portrayal but I do like the version that is just so slimy and manipulative.

Thor in this game actually reminded me about Tyrion Lannister, the same disapproving parent (i.e Tywin Lannister), the same drinking addiction both continue struggling with, and both being disposable tools by their parents. Only difference being Tyrion kills Tywin for sentencing him to death, and Odin killing Thor right away.

The most fucked up part about this is that Odin specifically told Atreus to stop searching for tyr because he knew exactly that that was what both of them were going to do, allowing them to find his decoy tyr and basically allow him to spy on kratos and Atreus entire operation against Odin which he did for most of the game. That’s what I love about this game. The most subtle details hint at something big further on in the story

For Odin to say Thor's sons were useless, IN THE PRESENCE OF THOR, and right after that go on to say his own son was useful and one of his best, started the game off showing how little Odin actually cared for anyone that wasn't personally useful to him. And thor's irritation at his father's comment about his sons, set the tone for the rest of the game. Odin is an asshole in charge and Thor tries to tolerate it because that's his father

Something I didn’t fully get on my first playthrough, when Heimdall says, “…and how do you intend to stop me?” Thor responds, “Look into my eyes. You tell me.” He then stares into Heimdall’s eyes, glances down at the arrow Heimdall is holding, then looks back into his eyes. Heimdall recoils, drops the arrow and says, “You are a sick man!” I didn’t get it because it’s not until later they reveal that Heimdall’s power is that he can read your intentions by looking into your eyes. Thor must’ve thought of doing something REALLY messed up with that arrow! 🤣

I love how the difference in strength now shows in the final battle between Kratos and Thor. From 46:35 when they collide their weapons, at the first hit, there was no shockwave, but on the second up until the last one, you can see in slow motion that Thor was getting knocked back, until he losses grip of Mjolnir, while Kratos was chilling and stayed relative to his position. For me, it would imply, without Holding back, Kratos was indeed much stronger and Thor was in the fight of his life considering how he was done with Kratos and is allowed to kill him. Thor hit Jormungandr so hard that he was sent back in time. I would say that greatly exhausted his strength, plus Jormungandr is certainly no pushover. Kratos is one of the biggest badasses ever, but not even he has demonstrated raw power on that scale.

@Plumtree1187 Unless you can skip cutscenes, I'm not sure how you could have missed when Kratos told Atreus to open his heart to the suffering of the Midgardian humans outside the wall of Asgard. Kratos went in intending revenge on Odin for Brok's death, yet completely dropped vengeance out of love and concern for Atreus in a moment, choosing instead to set the example by protecting the innocent refugees from the siege. I'm guessing you never played the game if you were not completely ignorant of what the character development tried to explain to you. Kratos explicitly said to Freya that he would die seeking justice and not vengeance, when just hours before, he was contemplating revenge just for Brok's sake. Kratos told Atreus that they were all alive because of Atreus. Who he trusted and who he called his friends. The only reason he actively got through to Thor at all was Atreus and his capacity for innocence, purity, and seeing good in everyone. Kratos changed his own fate by refusing to let himself be defined as a monster. So, for the first time in his life, he committed to doing good, selfless acts. He appealed to Thor's nature as a father trying to do good by his last remaining child, which is the only reason the fight ended. Thor was willing to keep going until Kratos was dead. If Kratos never changed his path and acted on vengeance and rage instead, Thor would have obliterated him. It was literally fated that Kratos dies to Thor. And I'm guessing you saw how Thor sent Jormungandr right out of Ragnarök. He could have done that and far worse to Kratos if the fight went on. Kratos needed to show Thor that he had no intention of killing his daughter or any other innocents in the conflict.

In the actual Norse mythology the world serpent poisons Thor after he kills it, dying after taking 9 paces. In God of War 2018 Kratos wakes up the world serpent, spitting back the ice axe and imbuing it with the poison.

This story for the game was actually extremely well written. Both this, and the First God of War continuation finally put story above knuckle dragging action. Thor's Baldur's, and Odin's stories where amazing and pretty tragic when you understand Odin basically trained his sons to be attack dogs; You see in in Thor by how Odin has jus cemented the idea, and the mantra No thinking into him.

If you ask me, the ladt gow was masterful because we saw kratos be better and grow as father, here is the same but with thor, how he struggles with his past, how he struggles with his present, how beat down he is psychologically by odin, how he cares about his family and all of these can be seen when he talks with his family. I really would have loved for thor to survive, that point where he understands kratos and faces odin is so fcking epic.
