Go on Alex. I loved watching Alex and Jimmy White in the 1980s. They were the biggest draw with their fearless brand of snooker. Alex and Jimmy won the world doubles in 1984. The same year Jimmy won the Masters and reached his first world final aged 22 where he was finally beaten 18-16 by Steve Davis, the world number 1, holder of the title as the year before Davis had thrashed world number 2 Cliff Thoburn 18-5. Alex and Jimmy were both people's champions. Then in 1993 along came the greatest player ever beating Stephen Hendry in the UK final aged just 17. I love watching attack minded player's.

Look at the electricity when Higgins played, he was like a rock star. There's nobody like him nowadays, not even Ronnie.

His technique proves that your delivery doesn’t have to be perfect.

can u explain for me how bad was Alex techinique? i think it quite alright
@sam_alimi Жыл бұрын
@@vule-ll8zutoo many coaches are emphasising on “perfect” and “straight” cueing these days, as with with Alex you can clearly see his cue comes off at an angle when delivering yet he pots almost everything.

Every now and again Alex beat Davis and it made it all the sweeter for Alex. Davis was my snooker hero growing up as a kid but fast maverick players like Alex and Jimmy all contributed greatly to the game's meteoric rise in popularity in the 70s and 80s.

Wouldn't it be good if they showed longer footage. This match was uploaded a long time ago by another channel. There is a match from the WC 85 R1 that I'd be keen to see as I was in the 2nd row with my dad. I've even offered to pay up to £500 for it, but it falls on deaf ears.

His technique was terrible. He snatched at everything. Very little backswing and barely any follow through. Makes it even more impressive what he achieved. Compared to the likes of today's player with their silky text book cue actions. I wonder when we look back at Ronnie O'Sullivan or Shaun Murphy, will we think the same about them. Same with tennis. Look at McEnroe, their technique was terrible. But worked at the time. Have we reached the peek in these sports or is there more to come?

The hurricane proved all the other experts and professionals that their text book clinical approach to the game was nonsensical. There is no right approach. It's what works for the individual. That's why I can't watch snooker with the sound on, commentators frequently talk rubbish.

@Tom Batterbury I attended the masters every year from 84 until they knocked down the conference centre. Free cigarettes were not given out, but people could smoke in the arena in the 80s. It was always a cloudy atmosphere, and ones clothes reeked of smoke when leaving.

@@digeme69 One had indeed to instruct one's man to take one's apparel the dry cleaners after a visit to the snooker back then. Quite inconvenient if one had a reception to attend immediately after the game mind.
