I'm a huge skeptic, having seen Derren Brown use cold reading on multiple groups of people and come out with hugely personal and specific information, even as he explains that he's NOT a psychic and that he's using contextual clues and mentalist tricks etc. Usually I try to give people the benefit of the doubt and try to assume that self proclaimed psychics might be cold reading without even realising that's what they're doing, and legitimately believe in their own abilities, but actually, watching the interaction between Liam and that medium made me really uncomfortable. That's the first time I feel like I've witnessed someone actually try to do a cold reading, and then have to back off when the person they were targeting didn't lean into it enough/respond enough, so she had to move on to something else (tossing out a fairly common name and then confirming the person who recognizes it is who it's intended for, getting from the question of gender it should probably be the subversion of the expectation for the name, etc.) I really don't want to believe any mediums out there are deliberately taking advantage of people's grief, but I watch a lot of this kind of thing and I've never felt that more than with this particular seance.
@WLxMusic5 жыл бұрын
Some mediums are disgusting with how they try to profit off of grieving people. A medium who stops at just giving people closure are ok in my book, but the scumbag trinket merchants piss me off so much.

Mediums are pure grifters. In this case, I'd like to believe it's part of the show/experience of the "haunted" house. A fool and their money are easily parted.
@nervecentral5 жыл бұрын
Honestly, all of this stuff is a grift. The equipment is purposefully inaccurate and in some cases detuned. The x-box camera is a perfect example. It is designed to "find" a human form to apply movement to. So they just turn the sensitivity way up and it turns almost everything into a human shaped stick figure. Look at when a person goes it front of it. All of those dots and lines are because the sensitivity is turned way up. If it weren't Liam would have had a simple stick figure super-imposed over him. Their cameras are purposefully low resolution, their microphones are turned way up so they distort very low noises, etc. etc. They know exactly what they are doing and have found ways to monetize it.
@bleepbloop1010101015 жыл бұрын
They are 100% doing it for profit. There are probably a few that believe but most know exactly what they are doing, and what it does to their 'victims' mentally, all for personal gain.

I think if there's any legit mediums/psychics they have to be the kind of person to not charge grieving people for a quick buck. as someone who ran a "haunted house" for a college group, it's very easy to fake these electronic readings. You can literally just float your phone next to one of those machines, and it'll ping as one or two on a meter. Also, mediums are easy to get. They're just people who are very good at "reading" emotions and guessing. They can do cold or hot readings. Cold readings are guesses. Hot readings involve some research. Ouji boards are always manipulated by someone. You can pay to plant someone to do it, or you can do it yourself to manipulate the planchette in one direction or another. Silly fun, but none of it is paranormal :P

Yeah. All of those apps are fake too. Even people who believe in ghosts should be able to fairly easily tell that those apps are fake. The reason? iPhones don't have thermal cameras in them. Thermal cameras are like, a real, specialized type of camera that you can't really get in a phone, save for maybe that like Red Camera Phone thing. Any "thermal camera" app is likely just highlighting in red anything that it can identify to already be a living source, it can't tell you the actual temp. Anything that looks like a human (which is fairly easy to identify, especially given software that is designed to highlight your face for selfies and stuff) can just be colored in red. This is why random things can show up, because there are likely anomalies and bugs with the detection software. The same thing is true for that kinect they rigged up. That microphone app seems to be listening to conversations and spitting out contextual words (which Google, Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft already have very competent assistants that do that). A lot of those "signal readers" they handed them are also likely bs. The one that picked up adjacent electricity can easily pick up static electricity, (created by literally almost everything), or the house had bad wiring or something.
