I was a mechanic in the late 80's. Since then always serviced and maintained my own cars. Knowing how they work and all their idiosyncrasies meant when they failed I was in a lot of instances able to fix them at the side of the road. I would imagine with boats this is even more important.

"Not having a phone number." A way around this problem is a VoIP account, which you can access with any SIM-enabled mobile phone using VoIP software such as Groundwire. Most VoIP providers have the ability to sell numbers for specific countries. So, if you're claiming a home base in the UK, get a UK VoIP phone number and you're right as rain.

Hi from Song of Pogo (still in Annapolis waiting for our Viking life raft to be rectified). We just bought an IPAD Pro 10.5 as a backup for our old and gimpy (1999) Raymarine suite. We're trying GARMIN Mobile with Active Captain on our trip south to the Bahamas this winter. Seems okay so far with a $10 cell plan. We'll see how it works when we get offshore. I really enjoy you two and your adventures.....

What about wooden boats in the tropics as apposed to fiberglass while cruising in the tropics opinions?
@sailingrubyrose5 жыл бұрын
There are rarer, but salt water does no harm to wood. It’s fresh water that’s a boat killer. You need to know how to care for a wooden boat and look after her. I personally am not brave enough to take on a wooden boat.

Nick - I love Bourbon! Try Woodford Reserve (pale yellow label). It's very smooth, not boozy/harsh like other Bourbons. If you really want to try an excellent drink, pour two oz. of bourbon in a shaker with ice, add 1/4 to 1/2 oz of simple syrup in, a dash of aromatic bitters, a Luxardo black cherry and a little bit of the cherry juice as a drizzle in the drink. Then stir (do not shake), pour into a class which has it's own ice (separate from the ice in the shaker), then drink. Excellent way to make an old fashion. I do not like my old fashions to be muddled, shaken or heavily bitter with orange peels. Those are the best Old Fashions I've ever had. P.S. I liked your old intro music a little better. ;-)

Yeesssssss! Scored 3 on "Here's the thing.." bingo! Another great video. Have to agree with you about the gas servicing. Had mine done by a "proper person" and he showed me a few things that were life threatening if they hadn't got sorted sharpish. A bit of a trick with the outboard carb is to switch the fuel tap off when you're about 30 yards from the destination and let the carb run dry. That way, the fuel doesn't evaporate out of the float bowl and leave the varnish behind to gum it up. Don't live on a boat/cruise for the glamour, 'coz most of the time it ain't. Do you live in a house for the glamour? Blacking? Well, it all depends on what the role calls for, luvvies, but that sort of thing is getting frowned upon these days....What is antifouling? Well, it's this kind of homicidal paint that used to encourage marine organisms to grow on the boat, similar to boat-going plant fertiliser. We use the abusive one instead of the self polishing, which is mainly for onanists. Cue Swiss Tony "Antifouling your boat is like making love to a beautiful woman...." You can feel the grease from here.

Have you considered using a Google Voice number to get around not keeping one number? There are apps for both iOS and Android or you can access it over the web on a computer.
@SteveWrightNZ7 жыл бұрын
For a phone line, you can use a SIP app on any Android/Apple device and connect to an online SIP service provider. This will give you an inexpensive and permanent land-based phone number in almost any country in the world, as well as very cheap calling. Only works when in range of an Internet connection. in fact, there is nothing stopping you from signing up to any local (to you) SIP provider and getting a local (to you) phone number - this will be very convenient to talk to any of the locals as long as you want..

With the phone number you can get a sim in the U.K. or somewhere else and keep it with you on a cheap backup phone. Or get a virtual number and receive the text messages and calls and voice messages on a computer, tablet or phone. You can also divert the virtual number to a local number when you get a sim in a new port. I haven't looked into this stuff for years. There may be better options these days.

If you have that, you should be able to use WhatsApp with wifi and still have same number. You can also set up WhatsApp without a SIM/Cell and get a number. Multiple web articles to set up. www.techbout.com/whatsapp-without-phone-number-sim-5365/

I have relatives in the US and I have almost had to become bilingual to communicate. On occasions I gently remind them that their current language (English) is only on loan until they develop their own. I love the way they say Jaguar (jag-wur) and buoy (boo-wee) and don’t get me started on Courgette. The conversation went something like this “what the Fcuk is a Zucchini” sounds like an Italian circus performer “The Great Zucchini”

Try looking at Google Voice for a phone number. A very rich and complex feature set if you want, or simple. You can have that one phone number forward to multiple other phones (like a local cell phone or voip phone) and change the forwarding numbers and rules any time. And SMS messages go to your cell phone AND your email, if you choose. It isn't perfect and Google tracks everything forever, but it is one FREE way to have flexible phones, including cheap overseas calling.

Why wouldn't you have a permanent mobile phone number? Check out Google Fi. Its international. Uses Wifi or several different cellular carriers to connect. Keep you number where ever you go. Cost is minimal per month if you don't use a lot of data. I pay ~30.00 USD per month for 1 Gb data. Most of my data comes via wifi so not a issue. I will keep it when I go cruising. My wife otoh has ATT with unlimited data and she will keep that. But she pays a lot more. Love that advice on bottom paint, the heavier the can the better... lots of solids.

I used to work with the Iridium satellites/phones. 1. You don't leave them on all the time. 2. even if you did, you need to be outside with clear view of the sky to make/receive calls. 3. OMG they are pricey.
