Ever since I was a very little girl, my dream cat was solid black with avocado green eyes. I grew up with a wonderful, amazing black spaniel type dog for almost 18 years, but wasn't allowed to have a cat. Then, many years later, one hot August night, I was walking my current dog, when I heard the most pitiful mewing. I put Katie, my dog back in the apartment, grabbed a flashlight, thinking a kitten must be stuck up a tree. Nope, a young black cat was at my upstairs neighbor's door, crying his heart out. I said: "What's the matter baby, won't they let you in?" Next thing I know, a blur of cat runs down the balcony, down the stairs, and launches himself into my arms, snuggles in, and starts purring like a motor boat! Surprise! My heart melted completely, my brain said you can't have a cat, you already have a dog and a cockatiel! So, that night I fixed him a bed in a box with cat food I had on hand for the cat at work, and some cool water under the stairs near my apartment. That had to do for then, but not forever, since you don't look a cat you had wanted for 45 years, in the face and say no...I did some inquiring to make sure he didn't belong to someone. Turned out the poor guy had been kicked out of a car on the opposite side of the complex 3 weeks before. He had been searching for just that special new Momma at every single door, receiving food and water along the way, until that truly magical moment when we came together. I considered him an incredibly special gift from God, one I had been waiting so many years for! He met my car after work the next day, and he became my sweetest little boy, sleeping in my lap most of the evening, purring contently. I tried many different names, but when I said "Salem" he looked at me and smiled! 😮😊❤ Next day, while he got checked over at my vet's office, they found out he had already been neutered, blood tests were all fine, updated his vaccines, Revolution drops, etc. and I got cat supplies, toys, and stuff- I gleefully gave myself a "kitten shower!" We got to spend 13 glorious but way too short years together. He, my dog, and cockatiel were all good friends- no worries there! My green-eyed, short-haired, solid black cat 🐈⬛️, turned out to be the sweetest, most caring, loving cat that ever was made, he never, ever scratched me or gave "love bites." He slept close every night. I guess the most magical gift he still gives me even 10 years after his passing, is that he will visit me in the night to bring me love and comfort, especially when I need it. I know that people who know black cats know they can do this when they really love you ❤. The visits are not as common as they were at first, but I can see, hear, and feel him- it gives me joy and I have no doubt at all who will be jumping in my arms, purring like a motor boat when I finally join my human and animal family in Heaven! God bless you and yours!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ P.S. the illustrated children's book about Salem's Adventures will eventually be appearing everywhere they sell books 📚 LOL someday!!!

I adopted a black cat four years ago and my grandma, who is now 99, started telling me all about the black cats she used to have and how they were the most promiscuous 🤣🤣 I have no idea where she got that, but she had me rolling.
@walterfechter8080 Жыл бұрын
@@errantwinds-up8uu I had to laugh at what your grandma said about black cats being "the most promiscuous." All cats have their little "quirks" as we humans do. I don't know about my black cats being "promiscuous," but they certainly were mischievous, sweet and charming. In Scotland, a tradition was that a newly married husband gave his new wife a black cat for good luck. All of my grandmother's black cats brought her good luck. Strangely enough, my gran's black cats knew when German bombers were approaching London even before the air raid sirens started. Shortly after The Blitz began, my grandmother moved from London to Bromley (Kent) with all her belongings (including her cats). My gran and her cats were relatively safe there. Cats: it seems; have a sixth sense that is akin to the supernatural. With care. Cheers -- W

When my mom and I went to a shelter a few years ago we were looking for a young kitten to adopt, and there was this 8 year old black kitty named Charlie who looked sad and wasn't interacting with anybody. We found out he had been at the shelter the longest and no one wanted him, so we got him and he is the happiest boy. His previous owners abandoned him so he has separation anxiety so I'm basically his emotional support human. We also ended up adopting a tuxedo kitten with ADHD to keep him company so he isn't as anxious anymore. They're both the best kitties ever.

I got by boy at 4 weeks as well. He was so tiny that I thought he'd be a normal sized cat if we boosted his immune system and gave him protein feed of sorts. He turned out to be a 58cm , 6.8kg panther. I have to position myself in a sumo squat stance to pick him up 😅 he loves cuddles, sleeping under the covers and occasionally sleeping my limbs dead. Vet has assured me that he's not a chonk, it's his genetic makeup that makes him such a big boy.

A black cat came to my back door last September, at 1:30 in the morning. Our family tends to be night owls. I was walking into the kitchen when the movement in the darkness and the meows caught my attention. Turning on the light, it revealed the little sweetheart with his paws against the glass. He seemed friendly, possibly lost and hungry. Letting him in, he was very sweet and rubbed against my legs, orbiting under me. He let me pet him and rubbed against my hand. We'd lost our family cat about a year prior, and still had some food left. Finding some, I offered this little guy some and he was very grateful. My dad came in and expressed mixed emotions, half approving and half grumbling, not uncommon for him, remarking "It must be someone's cat. You'd better let him back outside." This little guy had no collar or other indication of ownership though, only the fact I confirmed he was a neutered boy. He wasn't starvingly thin, but wasn't necessarily well fed either. Spending a little time with him, I acquiesced and let him back out. "If he's supposed to come back, I'll see him again," were my thoughts. About a week and a half passed... And that night, someone showed up at the door again like before. There he was, looking up with his adorable face. Amusingly, before I could open the door, my dad did. Seeing him again brought me joy I hadn't felt in a long while. Bounding and prrrping in, again rubbing my legs and talking to me. Feeding him again with soft and hard food, he gratefully feasted. Not knowing how his behavior would be, I opted to set him up in our garage first. Male cats sometimes spray even if neutered, or might display other behaviors. It gave him a chance to be protected while we both figured out if this would be home. Setting him up with water, food, a pillow and blanket to sleep, the journey began. Each morning I would come greet him, feed him, and bring him inside for a while. At bedtime, he'd go back to his temporary "kitty jail." Putting his picture out online, no one claimed him. Only some false positives that were verified as other cats, who thankfully were also reunited with their missing fuzzys. After a week, I took my little buddy into the local clinic to check for a chip. No chip was found. So no prior ownership could be established. He was the sweetest guy from the beginning. Waiting another 2 weeks, I took him to my regular vet and had a full checkup and had him chipped. Within that time, he did sneak out once when my dad opened the house door while I was away at work. A bit concerned, I prayed. The next morning while taking trash out, I heard a familiar voice meowing at me and localized it.. There he was, on my neighbor's roof! He pranced over and came down onto the wall and down to me, following me inside. Naturally, quite to my relief. He came back with a clean bill of health at the vet. He was a good boy for his first visit too, no real struggles. It's time to bring him inside to stay, and so he's been in with us ever since. He brings my disabled mom joy, my elderly father too, and me of course.. as tough as I may be in the world, he's my little buddy that stole my heart. He's my gift from God and I am blessed to have him. He has such big paws too, everyone remarks at them. For being a part time spaz, his long name is "Jumpin Jack Flash" for when he does his zoomies. He also loves digging, and not always where he should, so my girlfriend named him "Jack the Ripper." Mostly, he's just Jack. ❤🖤💙 Our little girl prior to him was with us 16 years, also a rescued stray from up a tree. And prior to her with some overlap, my first cat of 24 amazing years. Jack reminds me of him, even though he was a different breed, their personalities are similar. I can only pray to be blessed with him so long. 🙏

I currently have 6 black cats in my home. *Not original family plan ;) however I would not change a thing! My neighborhood has had a huge spike in the feral colony since 2020; people have turned their cats out, many literally moving/ leaving them behind to fend for themselves, it is heartbreaking. It is my experience that the other color cats are adopted & the beautiful black kittens are left behind.. we've literally placed 30+ kittens and only 1 black kitten. Ending with me foster-failing.. & then they live with me forever ♡ .. hence my herd growth in last four years. There is a small band of neighbors who catch, fix & home those we are able. But it is an uphill battle to feed & watch over so many - indoors & outdoors. Our shelters do not take cats.. so very thankful to those who open their hearts, homes & finances to help out!

Way back in 2005 when I was 19 years old, I had gone through a mental health crisis and was hospitalized for suicidal behavior. My therapist suggested I adopt a pet as part of my therapy plan, she thought it would be good for me to focus my time and energy on caring for something. I was living with my parents at the time and was a bit limited on what type of pet I could adopt. I went to the nearest shelter and was looking around at the animals there, I was pretty certain that I was going to adopt a cat, they've been a major part of my family life throughout my childhood. At the shelter the staff showed me the litters of kittens they had, they said they go quickly so recommended I pick one out sooner rather than later. In one of the rooms they had a solid black cat and a solid white kitten. I asked if it was a mother cat and her kitten and they said no, they both were kittens and unrelated but had similar temperaments so they were paired together. The black one was a boy and he was huge, despite them estimating that he was only 5 months old. The staff at the shelter said the little white girl kitten would likely be adopted soon but that he was unlikely to be adopted because he was so big and black, and would likely be euthanized. So, needless to say, I adopted him and he lived a pampered and lavish indoor lifestyle for about thirteen years before passing from treatment resistant urinary tract issues. In terms of how people treat cats here in the midwest part of the USA, many people see them as uncontrolled pests, no matter what color they are. Young men especially tend to find joy in running them over when possible, or shooting them, as if it is some kind of game. They would never do such things to dogs and would think it criminal, yet their bias keeps them from seeing their own barbaric behavior. Feral cat populations are certainly a problem, no one is arguing against that, but there are more humane ways to controlling populations and controlling the spread of diseases between those populations than using cruelty and violence. For example there is a local vet clinic that will vaccinate, spay, or neuter any feral cat you can trap and bring in at a low cost.

A little over a year ago, we suddenly lost a Siamese to pancreatitis. We went through and tried many of the "Rescue" groups, and the filtering process was disheartening. So we found a Siamese (we like their talkative nature) at a not-so-close county shelter. As we arrived for our appointment, a young family was leaving with the Siamese we went to visit. Not wanting to abandon the search, we went to visit other candidates. There was one, a large, adult, black, male that latched on to us, and was talking to us at every turn. He was in no way what we were looking for (non Siamese, big, male, adult, and black), but over the past year, he has proven to be the best companion I've had in my 60+ years of having cats... He hasn't been genetically tested and he was picked up as a stray, so we have no idea what his parentage is but we're thinking there is some Siamese in his background. I agree that photographing a black cat is difficult but I have had a little success. What works for me is not using the flash but having good light coming from further away behind me.

@@jeffbiddle1956 (in retirement) I'm a photographer, and I probably know how to shoot (light-painting, nightscapes, and astro are kinda my thing), I just have a high expectation of what I think is "good enough". Add to that, cellphones have only recently started to attempt to address the topic, so most "candid" shots are... well less than "good enough" IMO. People who don't have pets don't understand the bonding on both sides, between human and animal. Pets are companions. They're friends. They aren't "just an animal", as is the attitude of many who can't appreciate the gifts that animals are to us, usually because they've never experienced the companionship a pet provides. Yes, when you have to have one put down for some reason, it really, REALLY hurts! It's losing a loved one, just as the death of a beloved person is losing a loved one. I've cried many times when veterinarians have told me their is nothing they can do for my cat, and the kindest thing is to have him euthanized. Yes, it's the right thing to do in some cases, but golly, that DOESN'T make it any easier! Do cats go to heaven? Why not? It's certainly possible, and I think a loving God understands how happy our companion animals make us, and would include our continued relationship with our pets as part of the rich love and total bliss we would have there. It's up to God, of course, but in heaven we would need nothing and want for nothing, so I believe that means our pets shall be there for us. Just my belief, but it's heartfelt.

@@jrnfw4060 it is amazing how a creature so small can take such a huge piece of our hearts when they have to go. I have five little cedar caskets on my dresser with the ashes of much loved cats that have crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. To me, my cats are not pets, they are my children that just happen to walk on four paws, are covered in fur and purr!

My black cats name is Pichael (pronounced like Michael). I adopted him at 8 weeks. He is the smartest cat I have ever encountered. He knows how to fetch and do various tricks! He has a bit of a sassy attitude and is very vocal about his needs. He will demand playtime and attention 24/7. He also gives the best cuddles and is very loyal to his owners. I love him more than anything and he brings happiness to my life ❤

Our 1st cat was a black dsh who “picked us” at the shelter. Best decision ever to bring him home. He passed in January at 17.5 years old, after 2 years of health troubles. It was heartbreaking to lose him. My daughter has adopted another black cat, knowing that the cat can never replace the first, but now just loving black cats.

My first black cat was sitting in my driveway when I arrived home one evening 11 years ago. It was like she was just waiting for me to show up so she could let me know she chose me. How could I say no?!? I now have 3 black cats and am very biased. Black cats rule! Thank you for doing this video. I now understand why my youngest cat sometimes looks rusty brown.

@@Pea_Green I've always had 3 at a time, my oldest just passed at 18. She would let me rub her tummy which most cats wouldn't let you do, she was a Hemmingway. We adopted four cats. My daughters adopted a tabby and a grey cat five years ago. I got cat fever and wanted a black cat. The shelter had a black kitten that I immediately wanted to scoop up. When we filled out the adoption papers they had another black kitten who immediately stole our hearts. We've had "the twins" for a year and a half now. ❤

It makes my blood boil how discriminatory we are not just against people of other color, but towards animals or certain colors. It was a black shelter cat that turned me into a cat lover. He was SO gentle and was the perfect buddy for me to learn how to hold a cat, and start to enjoy the company of a cat. He never scratched, never hissed, he was basically like a pillow. No matter what you try to do with him - lift him, hold him like a baby, put him on your shoulder, he's just calm and collected. I wanted to adopt him but he passed before I was able to move into a pet-friendly apartment. I now do TNR on my own as well as work with street feeders in other cities. I have my own 6 cats and have managed to make cat people out of my 4 family members, and they're now caring for 7 cats. And all that because of an encounter with a black cat 5 years ago. Had it been a calico or a ginger that I first interacted with (more sassy personalities), who knows? my parents now have 2 black cats, mom and son. But mom doesn't like her own son lol. Son is a timid scaredy boy and mom is as loyal as a dog, following my mom wherever she goes and screaming at her when she thinks my mom has gone past the "safe" zone lol All the black cats I've interacted with have been gentle individuals. ALL OF THEM. So I really don't understand the bias. It must be because of discrimination based on looks. It sucks. Humans suck.

Black cats are wonderful. I agreed to foster a black cat and a tuxedo 16 years ago. I "inherited" them both becauuse they never went back to their previous owner. When I agreed to foster, I was told they were both male, but the black one was female and she had 6 kittens. I kept two of the kittens, who were also black, and while the mother cat and the male kitten crossed the Rainbow Bridge after struggling with diabetes for a number of years, I still have the female kitten, who is now 16 years old, and provides me with unlimited love and affection. I love all cats, no matter their color and black cats are no less good or worthy of love than any other colour. Over 30 years ago, I had another black cat who was the most affection thing - it could be 100° out and she would still want to sit and cuddle with me and I loved it!
