9I appreciate reading the comments and seeing that people understand that, while Varia is an exceptional and giftedly trained fighter, that Xena could have ended this fight almost immediately if she wanted to. You can tell that Xena is holding back. I personally believe that she is allowing Varia to take out some of her anger on Xena, and wear her down so she can listen to reason. Too many times during the fight, you see Xena start to show her superiority in skills (1:08 3:01 for examples) , but then back off. If you notice in may episodes, when Xena has reach a rage or point where she is ready to end the fight, she gets this crazed look on her face 3:57 That is how I have learned that she is in the "I am not playing around anymore" mood and it is glorious! I do want to point out that Varia definitely got in some great shots and was very impressive, but there was no way she would have ever beaten Xena, even on her best day.

Of course that no one (except Ares) is better than Xena but holding herself or not, Varia could have kill her when she took Xena down. It was the same with Eve/Livia, she was not going to kill her own daughter but Livia, took her down several times too. Eve and Varia were trained by the same God, they are equals and have skills to fight againts anyone.

@@ceciliaolivieri5395 I hear you, and I validate the fact that both women have been trained to the point where they had a very good chance to go toe to toe and survive with Xena. However, I would like to point out that in both times, Xena was either holding back or pulled back. They were both fighting to kill, Xena was not. Xena is much smarter and has way more skills than either of them do. Her pinch technique alone can guarantee her a victory. For entertainment purposes, they clearly can’t just have Xena come in and completely dominate every single fight. And I do enjoy when she does get beat (or has a standoff with someone who is capable of fighting against her, and it can result in a standstill or whatever the script calls for) as it is a humbling experience. I do have to say, in my personal opinion, that there is really no one who could defeat Xena completely, unless she trained them in everything that she knows. Remember, this woman was fighting Gods. Not just one God during a training session, but many Gods in a winner or lose situation.

@@ceciliaolivieri5395 100% agree. Xena is not invincible. Najara absolutely destroyed Xena and almost killed her if it wasn’t for Gabrielle saving her. And I believe by end of season 6 Gabrielle can definitely go toe to toe with her just by her development of her skills and physical strength.

Xena didn't kill more Amazons. Xena killed the Amazon Leaders (the best of the best) singlehanded, thus allowing Alti to trap all of them, and any future Amazons that die, in a place to harness their power. Eve had more killed as she almost wiped out the Amazon nation, but she also had an army to back her up on these atrocities.

People who say Gabrielle could have taken Varia in their little fight need to rewatch this video. It's insane. Look how far Varia pushes Xena. Varia is at at a level equal to or greater than Callisto IMO. Are people really thinking Gabrielle can take Callisto? Just because Gabrielle temporarily had the upper hand in the fight means nothing. Even had she gone at Varia 100%, the outcome would have been the same.

She might have won but she holds back because she tries to talk to varia and reason with her rather than take her out. This is a different kind of fight it's not a straight up head to head fight it's more using the terrain which is one of the Amazons strengths. It's a skill that Xena learnt from the Amazons

Another interpretation of that thread is that Eve was baptized and started on the path put on her by God. I've thought about that as well. Xena had more time to come to grips with her evil ways when Hercules met her and gave her something to think about. She met that full on and defeated it. Realizing that she had to fix her mistakes, that was her path. Eves path was revealed much quicker and with more desperation as the lives of her loved ones were in danger. The path she had to take had to be a peaceful one. Partly out of guilt for dying Joxer, she felt she would be betraying her path if she returned to violence, even to protect to the innocent.

They did a great job with the fight choreographics. The storytelling and acting weren't epic, but still great. Vengeance only leads to more vengeance. Just look at the middle east, they are in the middle of it, and they don't see it. They have been blinded by hate for a century, or maybe longer. Just imagine if that energy was put into forgiveness and cooperation?

This might be the longest fight Xena has had with a woman. Varia is very attractive. I must admit I like Lucy Lawless more than the Xena she portrays. I would have preferred this fight vs the alt-Xena played by Hudson Leick. And, of course, put down those swords and sticks and finish with hand-to-hand combat. Alas, both the actress that played Varia and Callisto stopped being an actress quite a while ago.
